I've been thinking about this for awhile now, but I keep hesitating because I've busted hockey for so long. Lately I've felt like the only enjoyment I get from collecting sport related stuff is from picking up singles for my pc, but at heart I am a Wax buster. No matter how many singles I pick up for my set and PC, the urge to crack product is always there. Breaking UD stuff has been pretty disappointing these last couple of years, from my 2 cases of Exquisite Football containing 3 Dwayne Jarrett Rookie Patch Auto's out of 6 boxes, to my SPX boxes containing 0 Rookie jersey auto's to loads of damaged cards being returned to me without any replacements.

The only satisfaction I've really had in the last while has been from busting Heroes Volume 2, Clone Wars and Marvel Masterpieces. Not only do I love the sketches, but I even enjoy just looking at the base cards. Plus, the prices for non sport product stays fairly constant. Boxes start at around $40 right up to $80.00, nothing higher that I've opened. And the great part is, the $40 boxes contain equally nice hits as the $80 stuff, the only difference is what the license is for.

I think I'll continue to build my 2 PC's of Ersberg and Mihalik, but I'm seriously selling off my HG set and starting fresh with Nonsport with a good chunk of change in my pocket. Anybody else made the switch? Any regrets?

I would love to hear any feedback and personal opinions!! thanks.

I think my story is boring now, but I made the switch a few months ago and haven't looked back. I find that there isn't even 1% of the problems associated with sports cards on the non sports side.

The cool thing about non sports is that it seems that each week, I find something new. Box breaks are much better and the companies treat collectors much better than "others" do.

No regrets so far...

Brian, do what makes you happy.

I know this isn't exactly the same as your situation, but I'm really contemplating selling off my Kostitsyn PC. I only collect his rookie year cards (05-06) and given that he didn't make the intial crop of players to be featured in sets from MVP on to The Cup, he's got very little selction out there. No hard signed autos (except for SPA) and no patches with exception to Hot Prospects.

I just don't have fun chasing his cards anymore. Most of them are commons/extremely high PR and the rest aren't particularly attractive to me. I've gone so far, but I just don't get enjoyment from it anymore and focusing my strengths on Doughty & Johnson, where I find I'm having a funner time tracking down a greater array of cards.

True statements Andre, that's another great thing about non sport stuff, there's a limit to the number of releases. For instance, UD released 3 Marvel Masterpiece sets over a 2 year period(I think) and that was considered overboard. But there's still a great selection of products, almost every sci fi show has a release, all the major comic book companies have products, there's no end to the selectio But you don't have to break all of them unless your chasing a certain artist rather than a character. But I couldn't give up sport cold turkey, there's too many great people here to not keep a hockey pc going, but at least my 2 players are low end but still have enough cards to keep it fun.

Crack non-sport and pick up singles for your player collections. You'll have your cake and eat it too.

If there weren't 30 hockey products released each year, I'd crack more hockey wax and I'd cross over to other sports as well. But too much of a good thing results in a bad foundation.

With non-sport, you won't have 30 other products with a variation of the same thing.

I'm very much leaning towards non-sports as well... I still am building certain sets and my player collections, but that's about it. Welcome aboard!

its not a bad idea Brian. i have thought of it also as i had some fun when i was picking up some charmed cards for my mom a while back, but for me particularly none of my favorite shows(non-animated ones lol) have cards...if they make some The Office cards i'll be ALL over that though

gl with whatever you decide though Brian! i do know someone who would be interested in that moller hg if you do move it :banned:

Hey Tim, if decide to take this route, I'll sell it to you for what I paid, I also have the Boyle, I think paid the same price as the Moller.

I made the switch some time ago and i'm glad i did.I was getting bored with sports because it was the same old stuff.Hey look at that........another jersey or another sad sad insert or nothing at all and i just spent $150 or spending $200 and getting people you never heard of and can't even give away. Now with non sports i'm into sketches heck they are all 1 of 1's you always pull something different and the things they do with some of the inserts like putting the feel of rain drops on them.then you have prop cards who doesn't want to own a piece of movie history.I've gotten rid of just about all of my cards except my patrick roy collection. And maybe down the road i still might add to that but for right now it's just non sports.

Now you've got me interested :D

How's interest in non-sports cards? Is it as popular as hockey or the other sports?

As for the HG, you paid $50 for the Doughty right? If you break up the set let me know ;)
:owned:

Andre, the newest big release is Star Wars Galaxy 4. Box prices are about 70-75 bucks. You get one sketch card per box, plus inserts, 1/1's, extra sketches, auto's and plates. Check out the completed sketches on Ebay. The last Star Wars release was Clone Wars, box prices were $40, I pulled 6 cards that sold for over $100, and one that sold for $350. I got to keep what I wanted and still made all my money back +

Sounds like fun stuff. I'm not big on Star Wars or comics or even movies in general, but if you're about the excitement of breaking wax I think it would be worth giving it a go.

Sure as hell beats paying $95 for a box of card worth $20-25

The hits are really unique as well, the sketches are mostly 1/1's that artists have spent hours working on. Of course there are some really crappy sketches as well, but the box prices overall contain way more bang for the buck. I spent $3500 on Exquisite football last year and got $500 in cards because of the awful collation. Triples and doubles of common rookies in 2 cases. Even regardless of their value, there's no fun in pulling multiples of the same cards out of 6 boxes when there supposed to be hand packed for quality.

I've been contemplating this for a while and figured I still enjoy collecting sports cards as it sounds like in your post that you do as well. Why not dabble into a bit of both? This week alone I got a Mario Lemieux autograph and a few CSI autos in the mail. I was definitely happy to see both types of cards. I've been getting in slowly and like people have said above its a lot of fun.

...if they make some The Office cards i'll be ALL over that though

I'll second that motion!! That would be the perfect relief from all of the recent uninteresting hockey product (ITG excluded as they have really impressed me lately).

Show-worn fur coat swatches...hilarious

Again, just to restate the importance of this already mentioned statment: do with your collection what makes it most fun. I prefer to buy singles for my collection because I'll know exactly what I'm getting. However, if you like to break boxes, then it seems it'd be most worth it to bust something that you'll enjoy, and if you even like the base from those sets, all the better.

Happy collecting, and don't forget enjoyment comes first!

I made the switch from hockey to non-sports a little over a year ago. I won't bash the hockey hobby, as obviously there was some reason I collected it for over a decade, but as Ryan said--there just aren't the same problems with non-sports as hockey.

Non-sports has a ton of variety (Munsters to Marilyn Monroe to Marvel) and price points ($40 a box, as you saw, to $2500 a pack/card). No matter if you're a fan of movies, tv shows, comics, or presidents, there is something for everyone.

It's cliched, but the key is to collect whatever you want. Stick with your hockey if you want. It's completely up to you.

And if you haven't stumbled across it yet, check out the ridiculously thorough House of Checklist assembled by a guy named Jeff Allender. You'll find a very good list of sets produced.
