I'm not sure what the maximum salary and bonuses are for first year players in the NHL.

Does anyone know the guidelines or threseholds or is there site that has this information? Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks
Jack

The NHL CBA: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26366

From there:

ENTRY LEVEL PLAYERS

How much can Entry Level players make?

Entry Level players will be subject to a maximum annual salary (plus signing and games played bonuses) of $850,000 for 2005 and 2006 draftees; $875,000 for 2007 and 2008 draftees; $900,000 for 2009 and 2010; and $925,000 for 2011 draftees.

The maximum combined signing bonus will be limited to 10% of the player's maximum annual compensation in any year.

Entry Level players may negotiate for performance bonuses up to a maximum of $850,000 in individual "Schedule A" bonuses per year (maximum of $212,500 per bonus). A player may also be eligible to earn individual "B" bonuses for League-wide excellence, which will, as a general matter, be paid by the League. In addition, a player will be eligible to negotiate with his club "excess" individual "B" bonuses, subject to a maximum aggregate of $2 million in any year.

So, salary would be $900,000 minus signing and games played bonuses. $850,000 in "A" bonuses, $2M in excess bonuses. Theoretically, he could make $3.75M.

I'm not sure about everyone but speaking for myself, if I was Tavares or any other 1st round draft pick, I wouldnt care where I was drafted at but there are some teams I would refuse to sign the contract for, and Islanders would be one of them, I dont understand why most seem to sign where they are drafted at, maybe they dont care where they play, but I'm sure they all would have their preferences.

It's an honor to play at hockey's highest level. Sit out and make a stink if you want, but you'll be judged.

well lindros did it and he didnt do too bad... I guess that is what the extensive interviews are for, if Tavares didnt want to play with them they would have drafter hedman or someone else #1 I guess.

didnt mean this to be an argument here just wondered why more rc's dont sign with the team that drafted them, well I guess we will ask Tavares in 20 years how many he has won as well right, maybe even Ovy I doubt he will win one either, not having inked a crazy deal in washington anyway.

All I know is Crosby Malkin and Co have one. Anyway too much emphasis on winning it, it is a team sport not an individual trophy, not having a cup doesnt mean you were not a great player, or not worthy of HOF status either

Why wouldn't you want to sign with the Islanders?

Obviously they can't get any worse....

A Cup in Washington isn't exactly an impossibility during Ovechkin's tenure with the team. Why would you doubt he'd win one?

I can think of nearly 29 other reasons.... I just think Islander were/are very mismanaged and I really dont see them coming out from anything all that soon, I think they might be even putting a bit too much pressure/expectations on him? Maybe? I think as a first round pick your best off not always making the jump right to NHL and if you do much easier to play a smaller role in your first year. My thoughts. Thats all

Im not saying Ovy never will I dont think he will but thats personal opinion I guess, the point is you could be one of the best in the league at the time and not win one, but a bum who plays a few shifts a game might have his name on one. Tavares and Ovy could very well do it, but if they both have long great wonderful careers not having a cup shouldnt exclude any player at any point and make them feel like a lesser man. Original point was I wouldnt play with the Isles.

Why not sign? If they do really suck, it's just 3 years. Would it be worse than sitting out? Or playing in a foreign country? At least he didn't sign a 15 year deal...

And when the Penguins drafted Crosby what were they? How about when the Caps drafted Ovechkin? Both teams were a joke and had problems of their own, even more serious than what's in Long Island. And FYI, I hear that project to build a new arena for the Islanders (and the surrounding development) is becoming more of a reality now than ever.

The Islanders won't be crap forever. They have a good future ahead of them and a very solid fan base. Maybe they're not run like the Red Wings but they certainly are not as poorly run as a couple other teams I can think of right now.

Plus, he can't just not sign with the Islanders. He's their property. If someone wants him they have to trade for him and I imagine if Tavares became available then there certainly would be a bidding war.

The prospect of becoming a UFA at age 25 is the carrot for players of that ilk to get started ASAP. You can either become a cog in the machine, or you can sit out and raise red flags all over the place and watch your prospects for future employment decrease, and possibly significantly. You want to play in the league, play by their rules.

The Isles may be horribly run, but how many players that are drafted by them are going to refuse to get their careers started?

That right there says it all. Probably one of the most intelligent, to-the-point posts I have read in a while. The players that sign right away are looking ahead, and willing to sacrifice some immediate gratification in order to set themselves up very well in the not-too-distant future.

well put. I remember before the pens got crosby and the possiblity of the pens not getting a new arena and being in financial trouble etc. i hope tavares helps out the islanders in the same way crosby did for them. hell, ive been to islanders practices where there are less than 5 fans in the building. Now they had to hand out bracelets to go to a minicamp because they couldnt fit everyone in the practice facility to see tavares. i guess thats a good sign.

Penguins fans refer to that as the **** Tarnstrom period - as in, why is a defenseman leading the team in scoring? The team was a mess, and I couldn't help but think that Mario Lemieux was the main reason Crosby resolved to play as a Penguin. Pittsburgh was absolutely in the same place the Islanders were last year.

With Ovechkin and Malkin, the lack of a real Russian/NHL transfer agreement and opportunity to play in the NHL brought them overseas.

I'm sure Tavares is a large reason why a new arena could be be a reality for the Islanders. The momentum of his draft, signing, and hopefully his first NHL weeks will be a boost to the efforts for the building.

A real boost. There are alot of Isles fans out there just waiting to break out and go crazy, we just might finally have reason too! I wouldn't mind one last 30th place finish to add Taylor Hall to the team but Tavares, De Haan, Bailey, Okposo, Dipietro, Streit, with a dash of Weight and we have a fun team for next year. (And yes, I realize De Haan has a 0.2% chance of making the club).

I don't know much about the Islanders blueliners, and de Haan really is a good 2-3 years away, but the fact he has history with Tavares could help towards his development. If he makes the team, they could be roommates on the road, etc.

Do the Isles have a guy who could be a powerplay QB?
