The Calder thread has been so fun I thought I'd toss this out there.

I think Torts is an option, but if you take that long streak away they've been a rather average team. Boudreau maybe??? The expectation for Minny was there though so I'm not sure he deserves it. Babs? Takes the worst club and has them on the verge of the playoffs, this is where my bias vote goes. What do you think?

My 3 nominees would be:

Torts
Babcock
Todd McLellan

They all took sub par teams and turned them around stuffed them in the playoffs. 3 of the 4 worst teams in the NHL last year, all now in playoff spots (assuming the Leafs hold on and clinch)

I think Mike Sullivan deserves a mention at least. Coaches with superstar players typically get overlooked, but with the Penguins with 200+ man games lost, and not just to 3rd and 4th line grinders, he has done a good job with juggling lines and getting the most out of some borderline NHL players.

While I think he's a horribly overrated coach (I could name at least 10 other active ones I'd rather have coach my team) I would have to give it to Babcock. Torts would be my runner up.

I think you shouldn't overlook a coach just beacause he has a good team. I would give it to Trotz with honourable mentions to mcLellan and Babcock!
