The Finnish Flash returns

good for him, but enough with all these old guys like forsberg, sundin, shanahan, skaic til a day ago, sitting around making everyone wait. if they want to play say so, if not get lost, and stop leaving teams in limbo.

I think the veterans you mentioned have all more than earned the right to choose if they wish to continue playing hockey at the professional level. In fact, I believe that all players have the right to make that decision at any point during their career because it is, in point of fact, their career. All of us work our jobs and pursue our ambitions/dreams/careers and what have you and I believe that none of us should be criticized, not the least publicly, about our decisions.

For the teams that are waiting one can hardly blame the players for that. If the teams decide to wait, then that is their decision. If they wish to move on and pursue other options then that is their choice as well. I hardly see how these players are at fault for a decision that isn't really in their hands. Their decision regards their own career and should be made for the right reasons, their own reasons, and should not be subject to the pressure and/or scrutiny of the public eye because at the end of the day, it's nobody's business but theirs.

Consider the rigorous training routines, the necessary diet watching and day-to-day wear and tear necessary to compete at the highest athletic level and then doing these things at an age where your physical strength is in its twilight competitively. That can't be an easy thing to do nor can no longer doing what you love be an easy decision to make. I do believe many of the veterans that take their time are wondering if they have enough energy to devote to another long and grueling season of sport as opposed to making a change in career/lifestyle. I think if you look at it that way it gives you a little more perspective on what these guys are thinking and feeling. They are, after all, just regular human beings like you and I.

edit: On topic: I am glad to see Selanne back for another year. He is a phenomenal talent and the Ducks will obviously find a way to fit him in. 30 goals is a reasonable expectation.

Nice to see him back for another year. Whether you are a fan or not, you have to appreciate his skill. Not many can still fly like this guy. Im glad he's decided to lace em up for another year. Heck, theres a lot worse playing in the league.....

So what does anaheim do to make the room? Trade or send dowm someoe to Iowa... Sorry a bit off topic but I am curious does a rookie spend more time in the AHL

I read in the paper this morning that the Ducks are actively shopping Schneider.. With a possible locale being LA....

I agree with greg on this one. Even look outside of hockey to the Brett Favre situation. Although I respect Favre and the NHL greats mentioned above, and though it may be their career as another poster said, the NHL doesn't revolve around them, and when you decide, like Selanne and Niedermayer did last season to all of a sudden return to the team, half-way through, I don't think that is fair to the team. It messes with team chemistry and sets a bad example. Brian Burke was wise to give Niedermayer an ultimatum, I'm not sure why he didn't give Selanne one. The Sundin situation is ridiculous too. He was supposed to have decided by August 1st, but well so far we've heard nothing.

Sundin never came out and said that was the deadline. I believe his agent said something along the lines of "Mats may know more next month but at this point it's still up in the air" and the media decided to misconstrue that as a hard deadline.

Seriously, get off the guys case. As an employee it is his right to choose if he wants to continue working and if he does then it is his responsibility to find an employer. The employer is in no way obligated to wait for him, which seems to be your major beef regarding this issue.

I love Teemu, 1992 season was the most exciting hockey I have ever seen in Winnipeg. However the term "mentally ready" scares the crap out of me! I would have rather heard him say “I’ve been working hard all summer, and I’m completely ready to tear it up…….with the Montreal Canadiens”:stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley::stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley: :stanley:(insert 25 here!)

The Sundin comment was mentioned as an aside to my overall point. I don't think it is fair to whatever team he goes to that he gets to miss training camp, etc. Do you think what Niedermayer and Selanne did last year was right? I don't believe it was a matter of the media misconstruing the deadline either. The deadline was set, and he extended it or let it pass. Not sure what kind of hockey coverage they have up there in Japan, but here in Canada, we get the best coverage and the media is fairly reliable on news like this. You seem a bit too passionate about this, IMO. "Get off the guys case"? This is league discussion and a lot of people are frustrated with this, and many valid points have been made.

Wow, I am a bit surprised to see you make a comment like this based on location. It's pretty easy to keep up these days with the wealth of internet resources.

And I am making other points in opposition, which is part of any healthy discussion. I really don't see how I am being too passionate as I am not the one calling people names or spouting harsh words, but I suppose that is for you to decide.

"Calling people names, or spouting harsh words"? Who'se been doing that? Certainly not me. No names were called, and you are exaggerating. Healthy discussion does not involve insinuations or inferences like that. Get your facts straight and look at what I said.

The internet has good and bad sources, as long as you're not quoting from blogs or wikipedia or stuff like that. You can't go wrong with NHL.com; the Hockey News is not bad either.

My apologies, I suppose I should have been more clear with that comment. As you seemed to be alluding to with your league discussion comment this was a direct response to the general feeling of anger and unhappiness people have expressed in regard to the Sundin situation and not to you. I will make sure to make that clear in the future.

I understand the frustration many people have with the Sundin, Selanne, Niedermeyer et al. issue. I mean, if Iggy decided at the end of his contract to hum and haw about retirement as a Flames fan I certainly wouldn't be happy but at the same time I wouldn't object to his right to make that decision. My main point still remains that it is their career and their choice and that (in the case of Selanne and Sundin) they are not under contract, and as such not under obligation, to any team and if a team wishes to make an offer and then wait for their services then that is the team's choice.

With Niedermeyer, however, I'm not so sure. He was under contract so it's a bit of a tricky issue. I don't neccessarilly believe that the return of a player is bad for the chemistry of the club as most of the players are familliar with the returning players style and it is probably an easier fit to make than, say, a trade. But having said that I do think Niedermeyer never hit his stride last year because he took too much time off. While other guys are in the midst of the grind and used to the routine that goes with it, Niedermeyer is at training camp and his body was probably a little out of it.

As for Selanne, I am glad he is coming back for a full season. The guy still has gas in the tank and is pretty fun to watch.

Look, no worries, and no offense taken from my end. I guess it just boiled down to a misunderstanding. Your point is valid and I can see you understand where people like me are coming from on these kind of issues.

In all seriousness, is it tricky trying to watch NHL games in Japan? I mean I guess you could get satelite or something like that. I spent some time in Asia a couple years ago and hockey coverage is sketchy. You might see the odd highlight on CNN or BBC. I am guessing the net is your main ally there. But from what I know, hockey is more popular in Japan than in other Asian countries, so maybe you'd be okay. I know when Paul Karya played there a number of years ago people went crazy. Anyway, I'm rambling. :)

When I first arrived (almost 6 years ago now yikes) I inherited sattelite TV from a neighbor but they had two games a week which were usually anywhere from 4-14 days old and on at 2am to boot. I got tired of that after a while and through a bit of poking around on the net I have come across a few places to grab games. I was pretty lucky last year as I caught about 85% of the Flames games all year and a ton of playoff action.

But you are right, conventional news coverage is non-existent, though when I am waiting on a download and want to avoid spoilers (even in the SCF) this is actually perfect!

Anyway, I am glad things are patched up. I'll keep an eye out for you at a game at the 'dome this season .

Are there any hockey leagues in Japan? Minor or semi-pro? What players do you collect?

Okay, stab and I's little tangent is over. Back on topic! :)
