It has been only a week since my last mail post, but I've got plenty of stuff to share here - from mail, and from a card show on Sunday the 25th at the Soaring Eagle Resort right here in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

01-02 Albany River Rats Ari Ahonen
02-03 Albany River Rats Ari Ahonen
00-01 London Knights Rick Nash
04-05 Springfield Falcons Brian Eklund
02-03 BAP First Edition Jerseys Sergei Samsonov (/100)
The minor league cards came from Sean Vicory on HockeyDB. The Ahonen cards are long gone, to Vic (Howe1850). The Nash is available for trade, but won't necessarily come easy. The Eklund is a keeper, not as a specific item for a player collection, but simply because Eklund's a Tampa Bay prospect.

The Samsonov came from ebay. Even though it is only barely two colors, it's good enough for my collection. I'm glad to add it!

01-02 Pacific Hobby Limited Guy Hebert (/99)
03-04 Upper Deck Ice Icons Jersey Martin Brodeur
03-04 SP Authentic 10th Anniversary Jaromir Jagr (/1994)
04-05 ITG Franchises US East Memorabilia Reggie Leach (/70)
04-05 UD Ultimate Collection Jerseys Vincent Lecavalier (/250)
04-05 UD Legendary Signatures AKA Autographs Tony Esposito (Tony "O") (/100)
The first three came in trade from Dan (s.fla-dan). The Jagr is gone, but the Hebert and Brodeur are available. The Brodeur is a nice one, and would probably take something from my wantlist to pry. Thank you for the trade!

The next three came from Jack Vos on HockeyDB. The Esposito (an abnormally nice piece of tradebait for me) is currently pending, but isn't necessarily 100% gone. The other two are available.

97-98 Donruss Preferred Olli Jokinen RC (Silver)
This important addition to my Best-RC collection came free from Shaun (stp). I'm very thankful for this card! It was on my most-wanted list of RCs, but only for a few days before Shaun contacted me to help me out. Thank you once again!

96-97 Detroit Vipers Len Esau, Mike Donnelly
05-06 Chicago Blackhawks Season Pocket Schedule
96-97 Carolina Monarchs Kevin Weekes, Jason Podollan, Prospects Card (MAJOR MOJO!!!)
These cards came in trade from Vince Ramp on HockeyDB. This is a very, very important package, so I'll take some time to explain it. First, the Chicago schedule was an unannounced throw in, and a cool thing to have.

As some of you know, I have a very large stash (perhaps "supply" is a better word) of the Detroit Vipers IHL team sets from 96-97 through 99-00. Without trying to sound too self-absorbed, I've basically controlled the market on them for the past few years, through sales and trades. However, as I only got a few Esau and Donnelly 96-97 cards when I received the "stash", I was never able to trade or sell more than maybe one or two, after keeping a few for my own sets. Thus, the supply on these two cards in the rest of the secondary market is pretty low. Picking up these two is very important, as it finally allows me to complete an extra set of the 96-97 Vipers cards. I will likely put them on ebay as a full set, and let the auction ride...

The Monarchs cards are even more important, though. I had been searching for years for the Weekes card, and the Prospects card (which features Weekes). Finally, after so much searching, I was able to locate someone with a set, who was happy to split it up. I also needed to pick up the Jason Podollan card for my collection of him, and was pleasantly surprised to find that he also was on the Prospects card!

What this means for my Weekes collection is that there are only nine cards remaining. There are two cards out of 100, one out of 25, one out of 10, and five 1/1s. The Podollan collection took a nice jump as well, but there are still a number of oddball cards of his that I have no real hope of finding.

Since I know it may be asked, I will answer the question now. I know there are one or two people looking for the Gilbert Dionne card from this set. However, it's already gone to someone else on the HockeyDB forum - but at least I can say it's someone I know will take good care of it for his own collection.

Commons (02-03 SP Game Used, 99-00 O-Pee-Chee Chrome)
96-97 Be A Player Silver Autograph Derek Armstrong
96-97 Be A Player Link 2 History Autograph Rem Murray
96-97 Select Certified Mike Grier RC, Patrick Lalime RC
Here is the start of my stash from the Soaring Eagle Casino card show. To be honest, I went for quality over quantity today, which is not quite my usual plan. Still, that won't show through in this picture, which contains a couple of commons, a couple of common autos, and a couple of common RCs. Oh, how exciting!

97-98 Leaf Fractal Matrix Daniel Cleary (/1400)
97-98 Revolution Ice Blue Bill Guerin
98-99 Black Diamond Myriad Brett Hull (/1500)
98-99 Pacific Dynagon Ice Forward Thinking Brendan Shanahan
99-00 Paramount Gold Steve Yzerman
99-00 Paramount Holo-Emerald Brendan Morrison (/99)
99-00 Upper Deck Exclusives Roman Turek (/100)
Things picked up a bit here. Even I was surprised by high BVs of the Yzerman, Morrison, and Turek - not astronomical, but higher than I was expecting. This also marks the second consecutive card show in Mt. Pleasant that I've come home from with a serial numbered Brett Hull card from 98-99 Black Diamond. The difference, of course, is that last time I came home with a card numbered to 22, not 1500.

00-01 Upper Deck Jason LaBarbera RC (SP)
00-01 Upper Deck Legends Legendary Collection Gold Doug Weight (/375)
00-01 Upper Deck Legends Legendary Collection Gold Adam Oates (/375)
01-02 Topps O-Pee-Chee Parallel Jozef Stumpel
01-02 Topps Chrome Refractor Mark Parrish
There are people that see good things in LaBarbera's future. I'm not sure if I'm one of them, but it's worth a shot! Oh, and I'll always love refractors, even if they feature Mark Parrish. 01-02 Topps Chrome Refractors are easy to find in comparison to the three seasons prior, though.

-------------------------------------------------------
627.jpg

99-00 BAP Millennium Gold Autographs Markus Naslund
99-00 Topps Gold Label Quest For The Cup Black Patrick Roy
00-01 Titanium Draft Day Edition Andrew Raycroft RC (/1000)
00-01 Upper Deck Ice Jersey Joe Thornton (White/Yellow Swatch)
02-03 SPx Mikael Tellqvist RC (/1250) (Jersey/Auto)
Finally, here are the five cards I deemed the best of my pickups today. I will start out by saying that none of them will be available for regular trade bait, as I'd like to hold these for stuff I need, or stuff of equal aesthetic value to me. No, these aren't the usual kinds of cards to see in my show/mail posts, but it's good to beef up the tradelist now and then.

-------------------------------------------------------

00-01 SP Authentic Todd Fedoruk RC (/900)
All was not simply a tradelist-beefup-project, though! Thankfully, I was able to find one RC for my Best-RC collection. With this one in hand, there are only three more I need from 00-01 SP Authentic: Roman Choke-manic, Petteri Nummelin, and Lance Ward. I actually got this Fedoruk in a five-card lot with everything sans Roy from the above picture.

-------------------------------------------------------

News and notes:

**In place of the Jokinen Donruss Preferred RC on my most-wanted list, I simply switched players from the same set. The Marian Hossa RC is the last Best-RC of any difficulty at all that I need for 97-98.

**As I mentioned in my last post, I plan on showing off some of my complete player collections soon. That project hit a slight snag when I realized I needed to do a little more research first, as one of my collections (Gordie Dwyer) may not actually be complete. I should be able to get this stuff done over next weekend, though, as I'll have a ton of time then, with nothing to do otherwise.

**I am considering doing another expansion to the Best-RC collection to attempt the Best-RC of all Tampa Bay Lightning players in team history. It's likely that I'll be able to get that theoretical project to near-completion fairly easily, but I do realize the stakes are higher at the top, as I can easily identify the Svitov Premier Patch Auto RC as something out of my reach (and frankly, something I don't have a strong desire to attempt anyway).

**Yet another card show is coming to Mt. Pleasant, in November. This one will actually be on campus at Central Michigan University, which means it's probably the only time in my life (not counting repeat performances of the same while I'm here at CMU) that I'll be in walking distance of a card show!

That'll be it. Thanks everyone!

Great stuff Andy!

I didn't know Soaring Eagle had shows!

Are they any good? Do they have a schedule?

Thanks,
Cory

Andy, how was the show at Soaring Eagle? Also, when is the one at CMU in November? I'm coming home in November and might hit that up if it's when I'm home

Andy, great stuff and awesome additions to your PC, as usual. I'm not sure if I have anything of intrest for the Tellqvist, but please PM, me if you have the time.

Thanks,
Jordan

budscweizer16, didn't see anything I was interested in - sorry!

Jordan, we'll talk in chat at some point, might be able to work something and it's not going anywhere at the moment.

Now, to answer the questions about the show - it's decent but nothing special - I'm glad it's only a few miles from campus. There were five dealers with hockey, and only three with anything decent (but I'd say they had some excellent stuff). I could have easily spent $100-$150 on good deals from a few dealers (if I played my proverbial cards right) but alas I'd never drop NEARLY that much at a show until I've got a real job (i.e. out of college :D )

Still, it's not a bad show for people close by - which is all of, what, three or four of us... :p

The next Mt. Pleasant show (the one at Finch Fieldhouse on campus) is the weekend of November 19 and 20. They did just one of those last year, in the fall. It appears that the Soaring Eagle shows are once in the fall and once in the spring.

Andy

A honkin' haul of cardboard & the like! ;)

I'm particularly partial to these:
03-04 Upper Deck Ice Icons Jersey Martin Brodeur; &
04-05 UD Legendary Signatures AKA Autographs Tony Esposito (Tony "O") (/100)
 That is if my credit is still good!

Thanks again for taking the time let alone the effort to put this awesome post together! :D

Brian
