Normand Lacombe was a 1st round pick (10th overall) by Buffalo in 1983, selected one pick after Vancouver took Cam Neely. Unfortunately, Normand's career was limited by a chronic injury, as Pro Set explains.

Like many players in the 1980s, he was never high enough up the depth chart to earn a hockey card. Neither a Stanley Cup victory in 1988 nor a 17 goal effort in 1988-89 with Edmonton was enough to slip him into the OPC set. And when the 1990 sets came out, Normand still wasn't there. But on the strength of a decent start to the 1990-91 season with Philly, Pro Set and Score gave him cards in their update sets. 1990-91 proved to be his best season with 74 games played and 31 points, which garnered him an additional 5 cards in the 1991-92 sets.

And all but one of these 7 cards spells his name wrong.

I suppose it's an easy enough error to make, but must everyone make it? The spelling error is so consistent it makes me wonder if he decided to go by Norman in 1990-91, much like Danny Markov became Daniil (or was it the other way around?)

1990-91 proved to be Normand's final NHL season. He spent some time with Canadian National Team before calling it a career, so there were no more opportunities for card companies to spell his name right.

But for once, Pro Set got it right.

Go figure, lol.
Thanks for the writeup - it was very enjoyable. Love those 90-91 & 91-92 card designs. These are the hockey cards I was introduced to as a kid and they bring back a lot of memories.
