That's the only logical conclusion from today's announcement that his next opponent is Thiago Alves.

All your other hypotheses are incorrect.

Two fighters that don't employ good strategy fighting. It seems as though it's a pretty logical matchup, both just lost to top-10 guys. Aside from Alves' win of Papy Abedi between the two of them they've lost a bunch of fights in a row.

I get that it seems like a mismatch because Akiyama just isn't that good of a fighter. But Alves could have a brain cramp again and lose.

This fights happening in Calgary, cool.

Yeah I'm sort of in agreement here Dave. Akiyama's biggest (legit) win coming into the UFC was Denis Kang. I just emailed Jon (Bebop) and asked him how beating Denis Kang and Alan Belcher suddenly means he can't fight anybody that isn't ranked in the top 10? I get that he has a really high paying contract, which means he's under a lot of scrutiny, but even Takanori Gomi was given Tyson Griffin to try to rebound his fortunes (though Gomi's "show" contract is half Akiyama's)

Gord (Shaboobala) said it best...Akiyama doesn't seem to fall down the ladder...he somehow falls upward. I think a logical choice for his next fight might've been someone like Josh Neer, though everybody in the Neer-tier I can think of is already booked to fight. Tough times Mr. Akiyama.

When Gomi fought Griffin, Griffin was still a top-10 to top-15 guy. He had only just lost to Dunham. And Alves is not a top-10 fighter. He's top-15 to top-20 right now. I think this is a step down from the Shields fight and a perfectly understandable fight to make.

Akiyama has withdrawn due to injury. He is being replaced by Siyar Bahadurzada is stepping in to fight Thiago Alves, this is going to be a much more entertaining fight.
