These guys are linked forever in so many ways, notably being the top 2 picks in the 1997 NHL Draft.

I know tomorrow is happy FA day (and Canada's 150th celebration) but what are you guys thinking will happen? Will they stay in SJ or move on? I hear Marleau linked to many teams and Thornton to the LA Kings.

This is obviously just a speculation thread at this point, but fun to discuss considering the magnitude of these two aging stars.

I think both are moving on.

id really like to see both sign 2 year contacts with the leafs until the younsters rookie contracts are up... I think the experience from both of these guys will pay dividends in the long run for the leafs

Marleau signs for 2 years back in SJ
Thornton takes his own 2 year deal in LA

My speculation :hithere:

If I had $1 for every time a Free Agent was linked to the Leafs, I would be freaking loaded by now. Seems every free agent is somehow mentioned/linked to the Leafs.

Not saying I disagree with you on the above though, because I think the leadership/experience Thornton/Marleau bring would definitely benefit the youngsters there.

Would love to see the Flames sign Marleau. There have been rumours CGY expressed interest. It would have to be a 1-2 year deal IMO. So with the news of SJ offering a 2 year deal, not sure he would leave SJ to come to CGY unless they offered him a 3 year deal.

We will see thou. He has always been a great skater and scored goals year after year on a consistent basis. i think he would be a great guy on that top RW slot with Monny and Gaudreau.

Flames cleared some space today by buying out Bouma. Flames RARELY buy out players, so we will see if this perhaps is died to a FA they have targeted.

In regards to Thornton, I REALLY hope he doesn't go to LA....That would be like Iginla signing with Edmonton this off-season. Would certainly leave a bitter taste in fans mouths. At least with Iggy, he has been to a few teams now and its not as fresh....if Thornton left SJ and went right to LA, that would be really tough on Sharks fans.
