Who have the Flyers just scored on? Is that too little? This will help.

Ok, so it won't be hard to guess who it is. But there is still something interesting about these photos of him. What might it be?

It is indeed John Vanbiesbrouck. What's interesting about the mask is that...he does not appear in that mask in any of his cards. All of his 1992-93 cards feature him in his traditional cage and the majority of his 1993-94 cards show him as a Florida Panther. Only Score, which came out way early in 1993, has him as a Ranger. But he's wearing his 2nd "Bees" mask.

Better seen here:

This one's not a goalie. Who's that old man behind Mark Howe? :)

I enjoy finding retired legends in sets a year or so after they've hung them up. And why shouldn't he have been given a card in the 1980-81 set? He played all 80 games of the 1979-80 season. Score would have given him a card.

Either Rollie Boutin or Wayne Stephenson?

Maybe, and it would make sense the goaltender would be a Capital as most photos were taken in Washington. But not all. There are some shots in New York as well, and I think this shot came from Long Island. Note the blue stripe on that white blur behind Preston; it's above the orange/red stripe. If that is the jersey - and not a glove or blocker - that rules out the Caps, but it makes NYI the prime candidate.

And if it is NYI, than the goalie is either Chico Resch or Billy Smith. Resch used a Vic most of his career, and his Vic also had the stripe pattern noted on the card as the stick approached the curve.

But the coloration of the pads don't quite match any other photo I've seen of Resch. And strangely enough, Glenn Resch is almost pictured out of action on his cards! There is not a single card of his in the 70s where he's wearing his mask. It wouldn't be until 2000 where we could get a regular issue card of him in action as an Islander.

Still, my guess is Resch.

I think you are right, Stephenson used a Vic with the Capitals, but all the pictures I can find, he's using black tape. Resch used a Vic with white tape and the taping pattern matches as well.

My best
