As many are aware, I am building the 2013-14 Sp Authentic Master Set. The last of the "big" future watch patches I need is Nathan MacKinnon.

I have been holding off on purchasing one because I felt the prices were a little high. The research I did, showed previous sales at around $800 (Canadian) or so.

However, there are not many that have popped up for sale in recent months and with MacKinnon being up for another hart nomination I am wondering if $800 is on the low side now.

What are your thoughts? One is listed for sale at $1200 Canadian (link below).I don't think the seller is budging on the price much. Should I hold out and try to find a better price or pull the trigger on this one? I should note: that the patch colour etc. doesn't matter much to me. I would be just as happy with an all white patch.

This isnt gonna help much, but I didnt want to read the thread and not reply. I cant help you at all with value on this particular card. Personally......I have had many cards that I have had to wait out, some as many as 10 years, until I could get them at a price that I feel was fair. Other times I have, in my mind, grossly over paid only because I didnt know if I will ever see that card again. That is how I approach scarce cards.....do I think I will get one in the future at a better price.

I dont speculate or forecast future value of cards, but IMO a guy like Mackinnon is on the way up vs. on the way down.

Looks like the asking price on the one linked has gone up a tad. Lot of people watching it but no takers, so probably a little high for that 2 color. Still, overall his market value is less than Draisaitl and I agree that he is still heading up. Only 24 and playing on a stacked offensive team. Maybe throw in a bid that you are comfortable with or wait for one to pop up at auction and see what the market price is.

Would ask for 800 and See. Good Luck! If you can add a very Rare card To your pc, Price (from my Point of view) is Not That important. You Could Try to safe money in other deals...;)

Personally I see $800 as an alright price. I do believe MacKinnon will get better or at least his rookies will go up in value. There has been quite a bit of talk about hockey RCs going up in value lately, not reaching MLB, NBA levels but still increasing huge on the big rookies like Crosby, Ovechkin, Gretzky and recent explosions (which is great to see) on players like Burns and Shesterkin.

I'm unsure why there have been huge movements in rookie cards across all sports lately but I do see it as a good thing overall. I also see this movement having a trickle down effect. Can no longer buy an increasing-in-value Ovechkin rookie? What can you invest your money in? MacKinnon could very well be one of them.

$800 is not a bad price for something you want AND need. There are 100 of them. I am sure 50+ of them are in personal collections. The rest are for re-sale (which should go up over the years) or still unbroken.

That having been said, I personally do not like that listing. I would wait for another. I would only offer $650 on that (if $800 was my budget). The seller is a novice and the listing is poor. But still, he has a card you want/need so it may be worth it. 27 offers refused on $2000 he is asking. Not a good listing. Would likely take 2 years for this seller to find reality but by then the card may go up in value that he settles at $1,000 someone may offer.

Hard to tell.

The way the market is going the price may very well keep going up. Who knows when the inevitable correction/flattening comes but even if it does, the best time to buy MacKinnon was a few years ago when he and the Avs were struggling. Now that he's in the MVP discussion year over year and the Avs are looking like a strong team it's unlikely the deal gets any better on something like a FWA patch. Might be a case of do it now or do it never.

I’m going to cast the discussion a little differently:
You’ve done fine with the rest of your set and you’re close to putting it to bed. What can your budget reasonably accommodate for this particular big fish? If that’s a number you can live with irrespective of up/down potential then pull the trigger. As the others have noted, it is likely a card going up.

Agree with Tachyon about the listing. I'd stay away from this seller, especially when you're dealing with this much money.

I'd wait for the next one, even if there's a good chance the price goes up in the meantime.

MacKinnon's cards were so undervalued from 2015 to 2018. I still think $800 for a FW RPA is not bad considering he's likely a perennial hart candidate. I can't see that thing dipping below $1000 if he continues playing at the same pace, not to mention that he's only 24 and his best years are ahead of him still and that Colorado team is stacked with talent in the pipeline.

Something's definitely going on with MacKinnon cards right now. People are snapping them up. There are literally no BGS 9.5+ graded regular YGs available right now on Ebay. The ones that do go on sale are going for 2-3 times what they were a few months ago.

All YGs are going up in value right now, but MacKinnon is definitely one of the hot ones.
