2020 was the biggest year to date for my PC. I acquired several cornerstone PC pieces I had been after for years, made some profit flipping doubles to upgrade others, branched out into some NFL & NBA, and had an article written about my collection in Beckett!
Here are some honourable mentions of cards I cherish that didn't quite make my top 10 this year, but are special to me nonetheless. Thanks for the look.
Big fan of Panarin, and big fan of High Gloss
love Mahomes, and this Green Scope Prizm /99 certainly catches the eye
Jersey # 15/99 The Cup RPA of one of my favourite players. By my estimation, the only player with a higher ceiling than Eichel is McDavid. He's getting recognition, but still undervalued due to just how dogsh!t his team has been...Imagine this guy in Toronto, or Boston
Relatively common cards, but these PSA 10 FWA's have sure surged in value this year. McDavids' FWA BGS 10 is only POP 1, which makes these PSA 10s among the highest graded examples, and thus, increasingly scarce. Even with the price spike, not too many people are looking to let these go.
Another card I've been sleeping on: Ovi Ultimate /299 BGS 9.5
To wrap up the honourable mentions, here is a jersey # 29/99 Ultimate of MacKinnon. Nice to see him getting his due in the Hobby - has been a long road since his highly touted rookie season
Without further ado, here is my top 10 of 2020:
10. Evgeni Malkin YG Buyback 1/1 - this card adds to the next picture I'm posting along side this. Malkin is one of the best (probably #2 behind Crosby), and most accomplished centres since he's entered the league. This guy is criminally under appreciated. His 2011/12 Hart + Art Ross campaign is still the most dominant I've seen in the modern era.
Adding this officially makes my 4 Young Guns Buybacks of Malkin 1/1, Ovechkin /2, McDavid /97 BGS 9.5/10 (top grade), and the Crosby /10 impossible to replicate.
9. I'm a big fan of completing YG Rainbows, and this was a card I've been looking to upgrade for several years. YG Silver Foil BGS 10 - POP 6
8. Sidney Crosby FWA BGS 10 - simple and elegant. I've bought these before, but as they become more scarce it's time to start locking them up.
7. The Cup, Game-Used, top set Oil Drop patch and a strong grade.
I threw in a bid I didn't expect to win based on previous comps - very happy to add this.
6. Another upgrade of one of the most aesthetic McDavid rookies. I have this and his FWA Black at the top.
5. I literally love this card. Might be my favourite in the collection. This card has basically everything going for it. The Cup RPA, one of the top grade/patch combos, eye appeal. I don't think the Gold RPA /87 will supplant his true rookie /99, but I think we might see it close the gap in a meaningful way. Several months ago we saw a LeBron James Exquisite Gold RPA /23 BGS 9.5 nearly hit $2m USD at auction (which is considerably higher than his 'true rookie' /99 comparable has moved at); and just last week the Ovechkin Gold RPA /8 hit $50k USD. These record sales are an example of a shift from the ‘true rookie’ paradigm towards more appreciation of these beautiful parallels
4. Speaking of King James, here's an iconic piece: old label Topps Chrome Refractor. Nice centering. I lost out on an eBay auction in the summer 2019 on one of these at around $4,000 USD. Had to pay up to bring one into my collection after he won his 4th championship.
3. In basketball, The Exquisite Collection era is exalted. There just is not enough supply. Here is the final year of Exquisite Basketball (09-10) Limited Logos /16 featuring a pretty game-used patch. This card landed on my lap, and I bought it on the spot. Can't say no to to this.
2. Sidney Crosby Ultimate Collection Jersey # 087/299 PSA 10. Been after this for years, and after years of follow-up and negotiations I am proud to have finally landed it. Highest grade and jersey #.
I actually think the gold BGS label would do more to complement the gold accents of the card, but I'm certainly not complaining with PSA 10. This is my favourite year of Ultimate.
