I’ve enjoyed doing these Top 10 posts the past couple years, so here we go again. 2021 was a productive year in terms of card acquisitions. Missed out on more than I picked up, but still pretty excited about what I added.
Here's my Top 10.
Honourable mention:
Made some nice additions to my Eichel PC. The Future Watch with Auto (FW with A) is his actual 'True Rookie', opposed to the 2018 Update FWA. In order to have this signed, you had to send the card in to Leaf while they had Eichel's' rights. COA is on the backside of the card. They charged ~ $150 for the on-card autograph service. I've been after one of these for 3 years, and missed the last one that came up in auction in 2019. I actually have another of these, but it's not PSA 10 (POP 5). Rest pictured: YG High Gloss /10 (can't pass these up), PMG Green /10 rookie, and the YG Buyback 15/15 jersey #.
#10
Here’s some cards I wanted for a while. I missed out on both the YG Acetate and the PMG Green /10 a few years back, at approx. 10% of the price that I eventually paid, lol. Love MacKinnon but worried the stars won’t align for him. Hard to be as good as he is in a league that has McDavid.
#9
Top pairing of 2017 Metal universe, with an unreal grade for a PMG Green. The Green is /10, the Purple is /5. Picked these two up immediately following that catastrophic playoff exit. Ideal timing? Probably. Anyway, here’s to hoping Ovechkin wins his 10th Rocket this year.

The YG High Gloss /10 is without doubt my favourite card. Think Prizm Gold, but with a greater legacy. I missed out on the auction for this exact copy in the summer of 2020, got sniped last second! Ended up working a deal with the winner of that auction a few months back. Felt I paid a reasonable price given what Kanes’ cards have increased by since then. While Kane isn’t quite on the level of Ovi and Sid, he’s likely the next closest thing from this era.
Fun facts: Kane led the league in points through the 2010 decade. Additionally, he won 2 Cups, 1 Conn Smythe (playoff MVP), 1 Hart (regular season MVP), 1 Art Ross (scoring champion), and an Olympic Silver medal. Objectively - does it get any better than this in the 2010s?

A hoard of Crosby PMGs. I tried to acquire the 2012 PMG Green when the PSA 6 was auctioned this summer. Unfortunately, I came up short. Knowing who won the card, and their high bid, made losing out on this a little easier. It’s looking like I’ll have to live without that one with how scarce they’ve become.
Green's are always /10, and sometimes the first 10 in a print run that includes other colours. These are beautiful in hand.

I like to collect in pairs, and this Generational pairing is as good as it gets, in any sport. I have a couple of copies of each of these already, but wanted to store a few more of these away. The Ovechkin’s have really dried up, with a POP of 54. It’s still crazy to me how Ovi has passed Crosby in terms of pricing/appeal.
There is nearly as many McDavid YG BGS 10 Black Label as there are Ovi YG BGS 10s. Just something to think about...

Similar to his current ranking in the NBA, this one makes the Top 5 on my list. Another Iconic card, of a generational player. I ended up picking this over another card (hockey) that I think I would’ve been happier with. But can’t go wrong with the King. Looking forward to see him take that #1 spot as the NBAs Leading Scorer.

Another iconic pairing. Love the patches and autographs on both of these. Worked out a deal with a collector who had these in his PC for over 15 years! They are both in excellent condition. While the money isn’t important here, I think it’s worthwhile to mention that I’ve already turned down several offers upwards of 3x what I paid on the Ovi only 2 months ago. The FOMO is real.

While I felt a bit silly paying a premium on this one considering all my other PSA 10s look like they have “10” autos, the 10/10 carries all the status. Plus the BGS 10 POP 1 looks like a Min Gem. The value proposition is quite compelling to me here; it’s not mass produced like the YG, and not prohibitively expensive like the (often) photo shoot Cup RPA /99; it has a clean design, a long lasting legacy, short-print (ish) and has an auto. Winning combo IMO, and not surprised these blew up.

This one is special. This might be controversial, but to me this is the Holy Grail of the Limited Logos run in The Cup Hockey. It’s a Rookie, it’s Game-Used , it’s short-print, and it has a Top Set Patch of the immediately recognizable Oil Drop. Rookie year Gamers aren't cheap.

This one is POP 23. These have been rather difficult to acquire over the past year or two. No one wants to sell, and rightfully so. I’ve seen maybe 1-2 per year on average and I assume they are all locked up for now. I picked this one up in the first week of 2021, and I’m glad I didn’t balk at the ask. A PSA 10 recently did $43K USD via Goldin, which seems like an obscene amount if you remember what those were at 2 years ago.
Thanks for looking, here's to 2022.
