Guess the word is getting out that every game is a nail biter. From Sports Media Watch....
Without Stars, NHL Still Does Well For NBC
It lacked the marquee names of Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin and Top 5 markets such as Chicago or New York, but NBC still held up well with coverage of the Stanley Cup Playoffs over the weekend.
Game 2 between the Bruins and Sabres drew a 1.2 overnight rating on NBC Saturday afternoon, up 20% from Rangers/Capitals Game 2 last year -- which featured the nation's #1 television market (New York City) and one of the biggest stars in the NHL (Ovechkin).
Bruins/Sabres was also up 20% from Predators/Red Wings Game 2 in '08 (1.0) and even with regional coverage (Senators/Penguins Game 2 or Rangers/Thrashers Game 2) in '07.
Sunday's Coyotes/Red Wings Game 3 drew a 1.5 overnight rating on NBC, down 12% from Penguins/Flyers Game 3 a year ago (1.7) -- but up 50% from Flyers/Capitals Game 2 in '08 (1.0) and up 7% from Flames/Red Wings Game 2 in '07 (1.4).
The 1.5 overnight is the second-highest for a first round NHL playoff game on NBC since the network began airing games in '06.
Saturday's game drew a 20.7 in Buffalo and a 5.3 in Boston, while Sunday's matchup drew a 13.4 in Detroit and a 5.3 in Phoenix.
