I'm a bit biased because I read EVERYTHING that these two guys write for ESPN, but both of these columns made sense on alot of levels for me:

The always hillarious Bill Simmons

The always somber John Buccigros

Both are a pretty good read.

One thing that never seems to be mentioned in all of the write-ups, obituaries and general "lockout rage", is that now that the sport is truly global, what makes people believe that the folks who come from accross the pond to play in the NHL really care about the success (or failure) of the NHL? Obviously they are more than content to play at home, for similar bucks - albeit on a smaller stage. I can't blame them one bit. My job requires me to travel quite frequently, and I am always my happiest when I work right here in Chicago. Just something to think about...

Of the poll respondants, more than 1/4 care about NHL hockey. That is the fact omitted and ignored. Sure, the majority of the population may not care about hockey. And as was stated in the article, if the media (ESPN) is not reporting about it, what reason do I have to go to your website and participate in a poll? We are all a bit apathetic about the millionaires squabbling. I am pro-athlete in this mess. But I am very annoyed. The owners have destroyed their league with the hiring of Bettman. What has he really produced? I am a supporter of hockey in non-traditional areas. I am not a supporter of his stupidity with NATIONAL TELEVISION CONTRACTS. This guy is flat out a moron. Is he still working for basketball by ensuring that the NHL has no media outlet? He has established basketball as a solid number three of the big four. My indifference to the NHL stems from having AHL hockey ten minutes from my house. I have a gazillion colleges in my area that play. I still catch high school hockey on a regular basis. And now with my nephew playing hockey, I have even more. I don't need the NHL. I do enjoy the games, though.
