Just curious, but weren't the auto'ed versions hand numbered on the front? Here's the auction that piqued my interest:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=56070&item=5155790509&rd=1

Could be the seller polished it off the scan, and since it's not entirely clear, it's hard to tell. The bottom of the card does look to be lightened to alow for the auto...

Just curious if anyone has more info? (Rick still around here??)

As an eBay Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Maybe ask for a scan of the back of the card. On the autographed ones, it would have a COA saying that the card was autographed by him.

I've never seen a 500 Goal Club auto that wasn't hand numbered. If it was sent in to be replaced, the card still would have the original serial # on the replacement card.

Its most likely a replacement.....my friend has a Dionne that's not hand numbered either, and the back doesn't say anything about being auto'd, so I stayed away....

As somebody who checks regularly for these, I can say that the Espositos have never appeared to be numbered. At least 3 of them have hit ebay since I've been watching... and while I never followed the sellers/buyers, I can safely say that you probably won't see one numbered - at least on the front. It is possible the numbering is on the back.

It does look fairly silly. Maybe also they were a redemption? I believe there is another one of the 500 goal club cards that isn't numbered as well, but which one it is escapes me at the moment.

I do have one question for the people reading this thread - can anybody tell me why there are 2 different beckett listings for the Mark Messier auto /25? There's only one version of the regular card that I've seen, but I think I might throw myself off a bridge if there are 2 different ones... lol.

As Vegas stated, the card looks to be legit, I was just wondering if the Espo, or others were sent out without numbering. As for the redemption issue, I know for certain LAnny was a redemption, and they are definitely numbered.

And I wasn't really looking to buy it, just came across it. :)

Cory,

I also pulled a 500 goal scorers Phil Esposito Auto from UD Ice.

I pulled mine straight from a pack, and it was also missing the serial number /25.

I believe that a rep from Upper Deck said that all the P.E. came without the serial numbering.

Thanks
Eli

Corey,

The following information was provided to me a few years ago from a senior customer service rep at UD that I knew quite well, who I might add has no longer been working there for a couple years. All the Phil Esposito UD 500 goal club autos were mistakenly not numbered by UD so they all are devoid of being numbered out of 25. At times you will also see some of the UD 500 goal club autos of other players without numbering, such as Mikita and Richard. What has happened there is that when UD produced these cards they made 3 extras per player that were not numbered to have on hand for replacements to be numbered accordingly for a returned card. Some of these unnumbered replacement cards were backdoored out of UD and but of course found their way into the market. As long as it states on the back of the card that it was personally autographed by the player it is a legitimate copy. Sakic and Shanahan do not have signed versions with UD due to their exclusivity agreements with ITG. So a true set will require one to take regular copies of Sakic and Shanahan to be signed in person.

Regards,

Rick
