While surfing the bay today I noticed that the John Tavares 9-10 UD SP Autos in the set have his wrong jersey number. I've viewed hundreds of his autos and never seen an autograph where he wrote down 19 instead of 91, while signing with UD. I know the autos UD is using on SP are stickers but Tavares knows his jersey number.

He did where #19 in the world juniors a few years ago. He's also worn #20 and #61 in London and had many autos with ITG with 61. I don't believe he's ever auto'd #19 as an Islander. I looked at several of my cards and compared about 10 of the SP autos on ebay and I think someone else wrote in his number beside these autos, and got it wrong. John usually has an open ended "9" within the loop. I viewed other SP rookie cards and there may be other inconsistancies.

Has anyone else seen similar concerns with the SP autos?

More likely he was hoping that the Isles would somehow bring down Trottier's jersey for him to wear... :D

Great question... that is strange indeed! I don't have any good answer for you though, and can't imagine why there's a "19" with those autos. Would UD really have someone go through the stickers and ask them to add a number to them all, then screw up? With UD, I suppose anything is possible, but that would boggle my mind. I can't see JT signing "19" if his jersey number was possibly going to be changed. And despite all the jokes about his signature, I've met him a number of times and he is a very decent and intelligent person, and has always taken the time out to sign auto after auto for kids waiting for him after games, etc.

Very strange indeed. I have no idea how that "19" could end up under his auto and I don't wish to make assumptions. I am just very happy to have a copy of his auto with the right jersey number included.

To bump this up-
Jamie Benn's looks VERY different compared to his SPx. "He" signed it with #24 which he wore exclusively with Team Canada I believe.

Jersey number world juniors. Flipped when he went to Islanders, couldn't get 19. The conspiracy is over.

So he signed his sticker sheets for his Upper Deck rookie cards before he was even drafted? I have severe doubts.

it's frequently speculated by basketball collectors that UD adds its own inscriptions to their cards... although in basketball, inscriptions added are usually much more than just a number and usually match the player...

Were there supposed to be autographs in UD's WJHC boxed set from last year that got nuked?

That could be the source, if they already had obtained autos an didn't want to waste them.

I second this theory, I was looking forward to that product. Wish it was never shelved.
