"13-14 UD Series 1 Young Guns - NATHAN MacKINNON RC
BGS RAW GRADED 9.5 at the Fall Expo!

Q: Why is it tougher to get a 9.5 on a MacKinnon than any other Young Gun this year?
A: I was told by Beckett that the majority have a printing flaw across his right shoulder. I actually submitted 2 MacKinnon's that I thought were identical, this one came back 9.5, the other 7.5 due to the defect! The person I dealt with told me that this was the FIRST 9.5 he'd seen as of Saturday, November 9th at 3:00PM!"

I'd be interested in hearing a little more detail about the "printing flaw". It may devalue anything ungraded.

My brother pulled one of these from a Box. Noticed the printing flaw. Another guy nearby overheard the conversation, and pulled his out. Had no printing problems (so its certainly not all of them).

He went to the Upper Deck booth and asked about it. The guy working there said he couldn't do anything about it, but took down his email info, and said they'd contact him this week and let him know what they can do. Inferred that sending the card back for a replacement will be doable.

Wow. One of the more important rookie cards of this year's crop and this happens? I hope the one I got in a GB is alright. :|

When my wife and I were going through the case she said, "Wow we got a third MacKinnon, but what's this pink mark."

I thought she was looking at her cashmere sweater I just bought her.

Only one had the pink wedge. They were both selling for the same amount on Ebay so I made a notation about the mark in the auctions referenced above. I would send it in for a copy without the defect but I do not have the box/pack/receipt/first born to submit a claim to UD.

I'm holding onto the 7-8 that have the issue to see what, if anything happens. There were a few other YG cards with printing issues as well, mostly a scuffing/scratching effect in white/grey areas of the card. Nothing like the MacKinnons though.

Saw quite a few pulled with the red mark. I tweeted @upperdeckhockey and they responded quickly saying, "It looks like a printing error. We can certainly replace."

Either way, both versions of the MacKinnon are selling for the same amount...

Seems people are well aware of this but I did ask the ebay seller:

Q: "Dear rydlar99,do you have any other details about the printing flaw?thanks"

A:"All I can say is there's about a 1 to 1.5 inch long redish, sort-of over-exposure going across his left shoulder to his stick. It's like a blur and not even really that noticeable until you really look at a card. I didn't notice when I submitted them to Beckett and got one back with such a low grade. I thought I had two 9.5s on my hands. Apparently the majority of the MacKinnon's (and only the MacKinnon's I was told by Beckett) have this issue.Hope it helps!- rydlar99"

He was OK with me posting his response here.

As a former journeyman printer, I can tell you that it's an issue with the cyan printing plate. That particular area of the plate did not receive any blue ink, so it didn`t transfer any ink to that area of the card, which is why it looks pink. Magenta, or red is pinkish in colour, and when mixed with cyan, makes that maroon colour the Avs sport on their jerseys.

Without getting too technical, my guess on what happens can be either of a couple things.

1) When the original negative was burnt onto the blank plate, there was something on the plate, or neg when processed.

2) There is something stuck on the transfer rollers that take the bulk ink to the plate on the press. Could be paper, a chunk of carboard, or whatever.

3) and most likely, There was something stuck on the cyan printing plate itself while it was printing, blocking the transfer of ink to the plate, and then the ink to the cardboard. They most likely saw this during production at some point, and removed whatever was on the plate. Why, or how these got out with the good copies is beyond me? They should have been scapped.

Printing lesson over for today! Tomorrow`s lesson is registration, both sidelay, and circumference.

Good eye. I saw your listing a few days ago and couldn't figure out what was wrong with it until I saw this post.
