Even though fans says his contract was unmovable it looks like another GM miracle as he is traded again. Phaneuf and Thompson are traded to the LA Kings for Gaborik and Shore. As a Leaf fan I dislike the Sens however according to TSN TV rights I fall in the Sens tv region so I watch all their games to watch Phaneuf and Karlsson. Sad to see him moved as I won’t get to see him play now, LA are never on east coast TV.

I gotta admit, I don't follow the Kings and Sens that much; does this have anything to do with the Daughty situation? Are the Kings writing him off as leaving? (even though there's no way Phaneuf can 'replace' a Daughty...)

Sens are retaining part of Phaneuf's salary, minus the bonuses, so they save about 4 or 5 million over the life of the contract.

Gaborik is a shell of his former self. Kings must feel they still have a chance to contend in the next year or two.

I am guessing the Sens are going all in on trying to keep Karlsson, especially if they use a buyout on Gabby at the end of the season.

This might also allow Dion's much better half to get back into the Hollywood movie scene again, if that is something Elisha was looking to do. Much like Ryan Miller going to Anaheim.

Dave.

The Kings fan base will dry up a bit if they fail to make the playoffs a second straight year. They were on the border last year, and trading Budaj for Bishop sealed Dean Lombardi's fate.

The Kings were so much better out of the gate this year but the congestion between 64-68 points doesn't really buy them much hope. I haven't watched Phaneuf closely, but it seems he benefited from being out of the leadership role and just doing his damn job, which is effectively the same role I'd expect him to have in L.A.

You start to realize how accidentally fortunate guys like Dean Lombardi and Peter Chiarelli are when you look at the bonehead deals they made and somehow they've got Cups.

Regardless, the Kings get better from this deal, and if this gets us in the playoffs, great. I'd hate to think of this contract as an albatross the way Ottawa fans did but we have maybe 2-3 years left before we're drafting right there with Buffalo and Edmonton annually.

This was to get another talented dude into the top 4 defensemen. The core is signed for a while beyond Doughty. He is signed through next year, and could be extended next year - and he'll re-up if he believes the Kings are a contender.

All they really need is Carter to return and they've got a playoff team capable of rolling three scoring lines again. To be a contender, Quick has to up his game and they need more good 30 and under players beyond Pearson, Toffoli, and Kempe. Fingers crossed about Anderson-Dolan and Clague.

Phaneuf can play the issue was always his contract. He isn’t a top pairing guy but giving less responsibility and playing on the second line he is good. He gives 100% every shift and is a great team guy, he will always pick up for his teammates and is willing to fight. I loved how hard he played and the big hits. Unfortunately in Toronto he was overpaid and put in a leader top two role where he was destined to fail. He played better in Ottawa with Karlsson doing all the heavy lifting. He will do well in LA as Doughty will take all the hard matchups and pressure. He also makes his wife happy moving to LA.

I thought about this too. Seems like a good trade for both sides. Good luck to Dion continuing his career with the Kings.
