Upper Deck Reveals Future Plans (Cuts SPX, UD2, Ultimate)

Sounds like SP Authentic will be a combo set. Not sure how much appeal Kreider can generate. Yikeys!

I hope my hobby shop stocks up on lots of ITG.

At least SPA appears to be loaded for this year. Fleer Retro should be interesting. But no official word on the Cup?

I really felt all the way that the Cup would be released. It's their biggest product of the year. Let's see what happens to it when the rookie crop is less than stellar

Not to mention how this crop will impact this year's pricing. Kreider is definitely no Nuge.

I'm happy to see Flair Showcase making an appearance in Retro - that might be something I'll chase.

Can't say I'm surprised about the lack of confirmation one way or another with Cup, that's been the MO for quite some time.

What else beside Fleer Retro, SPA and possibly Cup would be in the pipeline from UD?

Upper Deck never announces The Cup until the last minute anyway. If they announce it now nobody would buy any of the rookie-starved 2011-12 stuff that comes out between now and then.

Should be interesting to see what sort of content finds it's way into these sets. I'm not convinced this year is a total writeoff yet even with a lack of this year's RC's.

if ultimate is cut the cup will definitely be made, probably not as much as previous years that will all depend on how much stuff they get back from the players, not making series 2 that is a surprise, because generally all upper deck regular issued brands sell regardless what they put in it................soooo many people collect these sets.who's going to want sp authentic, another milan kraft, pavel brendl fiasco.

I was already aware of the rookie card deletion from all sets this year....and I have no problems cutting SPX on a permanent basis, but if their intention is to cut Ultimate off for next year as well and moving forward, I would have to think that will have major implications on the hobby.

Hopefully for their sake and those of the collector's, that this was a one time only decision.

I'm looking forward to Fleer Retro. I just hope the inserts/hits in there are tough to come by and the boxes/packs are at a low price point for kids and adults alike.

Ultra Ex Essential Credentials NEED to be numbered like in 2007-08 to jersey number and inverse jersey numbers... otherwise it's just a waste.

The SPx rookie design looks great too

Interesting stuff, unfortunately it leaves me with questions, and assumptions based off what we have already seen them do. The SPX Kreider looks "neat", but I assume that's the patch version not the regular version right? If so, they increased the production ftom 25 to 30, not a big deal, but why essentially copy the Panini Prime rookie card design? Just seems like they copied it instead of coming up with their own fresh design. My other assumption is while it will be nice for collectors of the cancelled products to still get the cards in SPA, those "extras" won't really be "extras" as they will replace one of the SPA hits like they did in The Cup? There was a stir from Cup shredders this year when they were getting 09/10 and 10/11 Cup cards in their 11/12 tins. If they add them as true extra hits and you still get your normal amount of SPA hits, this stuff might sell out in a flash and be a great product.

I can see why Ultimate was cut - given that is an all hard-signed set. The Cup is as well, but it is also their highest margin product, and the amount of signatures needed is lessened by the cut. I get the reasoning from a logistical point of view, but I also believe they could still go ahead - especially given the last 18 months for hockey cards - particularly for Canadian B&M stores.

I think when Prime came out, many said the design was identical to OPC Premier, which wouldn't be surprising given where the Panini braintrust came from. So I guess UD is taking back a design that was theirs to begin with...

I hate to say it but I don't think that @ $320 a box many kids will be breaking this.

I personally don't know why there are bunches of people that think Fleer Retro will be a great product. Hockey in the late 90s was driven by hard to pull inserts, but nowadays it's more about low numbered RPAs, sweet patch autos of stars, etc. I just don't see this product going over like Basketball did last year as they are a different type of collector. I just don't see someone dishing out $10,000 for say a Gretzky insert when you can get a nice auto patch of him for $500, IMO.

Where in the world did you get this info???

Wow, totally forgot about the OPC Premier rookies. Turn around is fair play then.
