hi...

as some of you might have already realized i am new to the boards and fairly new to collecting hockey stuff as well (therefore i have such tiny tradebait :-))

with being mostly a basketball guy i know that in basketball there is not even one set in existance which reaches collectors attention (out of the new releases) without any auto/jersey/patch but i have realized that in hockey it is quite different with upper deck's "young guns"...

can someone probably tell me a little bit more about this set (in which product can you find it, when was it first inserted, are they limited, what are the odds to pull them,...)

thanks in advance for helping a newbie ;-)

greets herbert

young guns come in a set called Upper Deck Series 1 and Series 2 (2 seperate sets)

basically series 1 comes out early in the year and is a good chance for collectors to get rookie cards known as young guns that are quite prominent in the hockey hobby world.

For example the Crosby YG is considered one of crosby's "top" RC's, of course there are variations of his rookies that book at much HIGHER values. But the Crosby YG is considered one of his staple RC's. Maybe someone can explain it better than me lol.. I know it can be kinda confusing but you'll catch on soon enough.

Its kind of confusing, I've tried some basketball myself, and me being a hockey collector I didn't understand why the rookies from Upper Deck were worth close to nothing :S

I assume it is the staple b/c perhaps many can afford it...at least compared to the ice,Ultimate and Cup rookies. The young gun reference with ud was used in 91-92(might have been used in 90-91) but was not used in every set...I think they used program of excellence for a few years....probably been short prints since at least 99-00

For many collectors the Young Guns RC is still considered the "True" Rookie Card of a player. That combined with the number of set builders who make a UD Master set every year and the Young Guns RC's of the stars always sell for a pretty penny. Check out the Sid and AO YG sales. Also, people love to get these graded so a BGS 9.5 or 10 is gonna fetch even more. Black Diamond RC's also have a similar following even though they are not signed. Another example of a card out selling it's "peers" is the SP Authentic Future Watch Auto RC #/999. It usually sells for the same as the Auto RC from Ultimate #/399. Hockey is different than Basketball, but similar to Baseball in that certain sets have developed a following over the years, like Bowman Chrome and the RC's always fetch a nice premium. Hope this helps... Mike
