Hey everyone,

I was about to send some cards down to Bruce Bullock to have signed, when there came some confusion as to which of the following photos actually depict Bruce Bullock. This is complicated by the fact that Bullock wore more different numbers for the Canucks than any other goaltender during his time here.

There is also question as to whether Bullock was a right-catching or a left-catching goalie. NHL.com has him listed as a right-catching goalie, and the colored photo #1 below is drawn from legendsofhockey.net: both reasonably reliable sources I'd think.

However, one of my fellow collectors said that Bullock himself (presumably), actually signed photo #2 (clearly depicting a left-catching goalie).

Who is depicted in each photo?? (I've listed my differential below each one)

#1

This photo above is Bruce Bullock as provided by legendsofhockey.net. It's unclear what number he is wearing, but it looks like 13 or 18; to my knowledge, no Canuck goalie actually wore that number in an actual game.

#2

This photo was apparently signed by Bullock himself for a fellow collector. I suppose if it actually wasn't Bullock, he could have signed it anyway. My differential on this photo would be Dunc Wilson (pre-beard era)

Bruce Bullock on goaliearchives, the only website listing him as a right-catching goalie. My differential: Ken Lockett?

#4

Bruce Bullock as per google images..clearly a right-catching goalie. Clearly wearing 35. In that era, only Ed Dyck, and Curt Ridley ever wore 35 (and they were both left-catching for certain). Richard Brodeur later wore 35 but never in stick-logo uniform. I have no idea who else this could be...except perhaps Ken Ellacott, the only other right-catching goalie I could think of (but his Canucks debut was in 82-83). Could this be pre-season several years earlier? (although there is no evidence of him ever wearing 35)

Any help is greatly appreciated, I hope to get it right!

I'll say this, I used to use legendsofhockey.net images for my personal index cards that I made to send away for autographs. I stopped using their pictures because all too often the athlete would return the card with "sorry but this picture isn't me." I don't know what kind of system they have there but its far from perfect. Futhermore, legendsofhockey.net is riddled with small mistakes in the bios and regarding picture captions. As an historian it irks in a special way so I've sent them many emails pointed out these errors, never to get a reply or see the change take place.

I'm a member of the Society for International Hockey Research. On their website I found a picture of Bullock with the Tulsa Oilers. Its a close up with no mask and its him for sure. You can clearly see from the picture that he's a left handed catcher. They also have him as wearing #30, 31 and 1 as a Canuck but never #35 so my bet is the last picture is wrong. If you want copy of the Tulsa Oilers pic send me a PM with your email and I'll forward it to you.

When I did the custom goalie set and I believe it was you who pointed out the pic I had (your #1) was incorrect and that pic #3 was correct so I swapped them out

Having just looked around on the intrawebs I believe Bullock was a right handed, left catching goalie

At Clarkson

At Phoenix (PHL)

See here as a Seattle Totem clearly catching left

Totems Video

See it's Bullock at the :50 mark and the mask at 1:05 matches pic #3 (Higgins style mask with triangle cheek holes) At around 6:14 you see his face clearly unmasked during an interview

He wore 30, 24, 35, 31, 1 according to hockey reference .com but they list him as a right catcher.

Photographic and video evidence takes precedence over text I think so my bet is catches left

Here is bit of trivia for you.

Do you know the name of Bruce Bullock's dentist in the 70's.

Give up?

Well it was me.
