How is no one talking about this?

It was 3-0 Vegas, I grabbed a drink and went upstairs to bed turned it back on and it was 4-3 Sharks. What in the world? :speechless:

This has been the most insane 1st round of the playoffs in quite some time I think.

I didn't watch the game myself but I loved to see the team rally around their captain like that. Scoring 4 times on a 5 minute power play is unreal.

That was one of the best periods of hockey in NHL playoff history. Unfortunately it was fueled by what will go down as one of the most disappointing and controversial calls in NHL playoff history.

I REALLY hate seeing the refs decided the outcome of a Game 7/series, but, alas, that is what happened. They turned what should have been a 2 minute crosschecking minor into a major, and on the wrong player to boot! I just think with the "shock and awe" of blood on the ice and it being in SJ, they gave in to the pressure and made a knee jerk call which, obviously, cost Vegas the game. I'd be waiting outside the refs dressing room after if I was Gallant! Hahaha

That aside, what's done is done, and it was still very exciting, and an incredible 3rd period/OT to close out the series.

Any of you try reffing? Was it a bad call? In slow motion and replays it’s easy! That play happened so quick and so unexpected that you can’t blame the refs, they’re human. Can you blame Vegas’s PK? They’re the ones who let 4 goals on a 5 minute penalty.

I just saw the replay. MAYBE a 2 minute penalty, on Eakin. I'm not sure what the linesman dropping the puck is looking at, either. The puck moving to the point? Sure, but it's still his responsibility to pay attention to the two guys at the dot until everyone scatters, THEN move to the blue line to his position. Sure, Pavelski went down hard, but that's because Eakin knocked him of balance, then the other VGK (can't tell who that is), finishes pushing him over.

Bossy22, yes, I do ref. I have for about 5 years. Yes, the game is fast and you need to have your eyes on a swivel. I make incorrect calls, just like anyone else. But this is a bad call.

For what it's worth, I wanted San Jose to win the series, but that's a sucky way to lose if you're Vegas.

If you read my post I agree that it is a bad call (I also am a ref). People calling it a bs call and such are what is annoying me and saying they cost them the series. The refs did make a bad call, they would agree after seeing replay but it happens. Vegas did not have to let 4 goals on a 5 minute powerplay, that is 100% on them. They fell apart. Did the reffing play a part, of course it did but if they had killed it off or even just let 1 we would not be talking about this as much.

The refs did NOT decide the outcome of the game. It was a very well reffed game with 1 (one) bad call. Vegas falling apart called them the game! If the whole game was poorly called I could see this statement but one bad call costing a team a 3-0 lead, no way. This is on Vegas!!!

I didn't see you say it was a bad call. Yes, of course it's on Vegas for letting in 4 goals in 5 minutes, they're the ones playing the game, and they have to play the game as it's called. The refs didn't go up, kick the puck in and call it a good goal*. But, I've seen many times where 1 bad call completely changes the complexion of the game.

*As a COMPLETE aside, I can't tell you how many times my partner and I say we should do this during particularly bad beer league games, especially those where it seems the game could to go overtime

Look, I don't have a horse in this race, both these teams are a nemesis of my Kings. ;)

Remember, there are TWO sides to every coin pal:

You can also make a case for the opposing argument which is the indeed refs blew the call, and if they had made the proper one, the Sharks would only have had a 2 minute power play and Vegas would have won. But how you ask?

You talk about Vegas let the goals in, blah, blah, blah, but if you watched the game, you know the Sharks were accomplishing ZERO 5 on 5, Vegas was TOTALLY dominating the game, especially even strength.

So if the Sharks had the correct call made for them, they would have only scored ONCE on the PP and, subsequently, in all likelihood, not won the game.

Anyway...............on to the next!

IMO, the refs blew the call. You better be sure of the call if you are going to call a 5 minute major. I'm not trying to add fuel to the fire, but it seemed like a reactionary call because of Pavelski's injury.

If it was a 2 minute penalty, even a double minor, it wouldn't have had as significant an outcome as giving a 5 full minute power play. Your PK players are exhausted, and the coach has little choice but to put different guys on the PK. Even the lines after are going to be different. Plus Eakin is gone for the rest of the game (game misconduct).

Sorry but Vegas got screwed by the refs. Feel bad for the refs who are going to take a lot of heat for the outcome.

This.

Ultimately, it is on Vegas to come together and kill off the penalty. In that, they failed miserably.

But this wasn't a case of a 2 minute minor being called and SJ scoring on the ensuing PP. It was a case of a 5 minute major, (the worst penalty to take) being called erroneously, which immediately changed the tone of the game, before the first of the four goals even went in.

You have a team that has done well to hold off a much stronger team (on paper), who has been playing three straight elimination games. To have such an error go against you is psychologically devastating, since they were already likely mentally exhausted and had the end in sight. To boot, the call came against one of their best penalty killers. Barrie is right....at no point was SJ even in the game until they were given that massive lifeline.

Vegas did well to pull the goalie and tie it back up, but you could tell in OT that it was only a matter of time, unless they lucked out and had a lucky bounce. Insert jokes about 'Luck" and "Vegas" and "Sharks smelling blood in the water" here.

Teams should have the ability to challenge a call in extreme instances like this. If review concludes they are wrong, penalize them for it, same as a goal challenge.

Yes, let’s add more video replay!!! Why don’t we just take out refs and use a computer system!! There has always been a human element, and always should be! It sucks that it turned momentum. It sucks that they got 1 call wrong. It does but it’s life. Refs aren’t perfect but that’s part of the game, the teams still need to play.

Seems fitting after Game 2 when Sharks fans complained about the GI call that resulted in the swing of the game and momentum and VGK fans said "the Sharks should've killed the PP resulted from a bad call." Guess Vegas should've done the same in game 7 and not given up 4 goals on a 5 min PP.

Yes, the call was a terrible call but, the Vegas PK was even worse.

Partially (still) bitter about the Jets misfortune a year ago against Knights, and partially in that I want to see a team actually be in existence for 10 years or so to suffer a bit before reaching the promised land, I must say I was satisfied with the outcome, no matter how it came to this. (Sorry for the run-on sentence!)

Hoping to see Jumbo Joe finally get the crown jewel after almost 25 years in the league. I don't really have a pony in the 2019 Playoffs with the Jets and now Leafs being gone.

I don't think it is needed for routine penalty calls. But a major/game misconduct should have the ability to be reviewed. In most cases it is cut and dry, and the penalty is warranted. But if a coach wants a misconduct reviewed, then they should lose the ability to challenge a goal in the same game also.

Sorry...horrendous call...changed the outcome of a series, not just a game. Sure, 4 goals allowed is on Vegas, but the situation should have never arisen in the first place. Okay, give Eakin a 2, even though he didn't do anything, but 5 and the gate? There was so much confusion with the doctors coming on the ice, and the players chirping, that I don't think there was a conference between the refs. Anyway...my 2 cents, which is equal to your 2 cents...Horrible call, cost a team a series, game is over, move on.

Unreal turn of events, I'd been good with a 2 minute cross-check, but damn! I can only think that the refs were trying to even things up, thinking the Vegas had the game in the bag.
