Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the months of January-March 2022. As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 17 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase.
For the first time ever I will group all cards which are outside the top 20 into product release to try and minimize the length of this thread.
#. 2005-06 Trilogy
First up are a trio of cards from the Trilogy release which feature a dual colored Dominik Hasek jersey swatch, a jersey/auto from canucks' great Markus Naslund an eye-popping 3-colour patch of Ed Jovanovski. The Naslund and Jovanovski cards are each numbered to 10 copies each. A highly underrated release, the insert and chase cards from Trilogy 05-06 featured some great pulls!
#. 2005-06 UD SP Game Used
Next up another trio of parallel cards. The first is a gold rookie card of Rob McVicar numbered to 25. Rob only featured in one NHL game unfortunately before retiring from the game after the 2008-09 season. The next two cards are rare Alexander Steen autographed parallels numbered to 5 and 10 copies respectively. Steen was one of many rookie from this year that highlight, what I believe to be, the greatest rookie class to date.
#. 2005-06 Rookie Update
Another largely overlooked product, the Rookie update release features one of my favorite patch inserts; the dual Rookie Inspiration patches /25. Here we see my newest addition along with some multicolored jersey versions numbered to 999.
#. 2005-06 Upper Deck
While this portion of the list only features four cards from Upper Deck series 1 & 2, stay tuned for many more later on in the top 20!
The first card here is one I had multiple opportunities to acquire over my time collecting but just never pulled the trigger. Its a dual rookie showdown of Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin, where each player can be viewed based on your perspective angle. It has quite the "1996 McDonald's" feel and unique to 2005-06. Next we have a notable numbers auto of Marty Turco /35 and two Rookie Threads Autographed parallels of Bourque and Helbling, each numbered to 75.
#. 2005-06 In the Game
I decided to group the ITG Ultimate and Heroes & Prospects releases together as there is only one card from each. The first is a HOF autograph of Rod Gilbert of the New York Rangers, who unfortunately passed away last year. The next is one of my favorites of the past year, dual jersey of Terry Sawchuk and Patrick Roy. The Sawchuk swatch comes from his stint in Los Angeles while the 3-colour Roy comes from his days with the Avalanche.
#. 2005-06 UD MVP
Up next is a great mix of Gold and Platinum MVP Parallels from a Canucks collection I was able to acquire recently. The distinction of these cards lie in the foil and in the serial numbers. The golds were numbered to 100, while the platinums were each limited to 25.
Gold (/100):
Platinum (/25):
#. 2005-06 UD Be A Player (BAP)
The 05-06 BAP release seems to be largely forgotten, especially when compared to the earlier releases. I believe its due to the lack of rookies in the product, and what a year to miss having any rookie autographs. Even still, lots of HOF and star autographs to be found regardless. The first card is actually a short print autograph of Markus Naslund, while the next two are Triple autographs with some prominent names. Among them include newly HOF inductee Jarome Iginla and a rare signature of Paul Kariya.
#. 2005-06 UD Ice
05-06 UD Ice made excellent use of the acetate technology, and it would be awesome as a stand alone product again in my opinion. The first card here is a triple colour Dany Heatley from his time with the Senators. The next card is yet another tough Steen find, a Cool Threads Jersey Autograph which features a dual coloured swatch and numbered to 35. Up next is a 3-colour patch of Ryan Miller from the Fresh Ice series /50. The last, and my favorite of the bunch, is a 4-colour Frozen Fabrics Patch of Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff!
#. 2005-06 UD Black Diamond
One of the most aesthetically pleasing releases from this year, I was able to pick up a trio of Ruby parallel cards each numbered to 100 (Drury, Zednik and Bergeron). Along with the Rubies, I found a dual jersey Thornton numbered to 25 and an incredible Gold Gemography Markus Naslund Autograph limited to just 10 copies.
#. 2005-06 Powerplay
One of my personal favorite products, the finds from UD Powerplay did not disappoint! I was able to track down a dual colour jersey card of JS Giguere, along with a 3-colour Joe Thornton. And the best one yet, a 4-colour Avalanche Patch of Ville Nieminen numbered 5/5! These patch cards never get old, and are incredibly difficult to find, making each addition worth noting. As an aside, I was also able to pick up a complete rookie set, can't have too many Ovechkin and Crosby rookie these days.
#. 2005-06 UD Beehive
Speaking of not having too many Ovechkin and Crosby rookies, I was able to acquire an additional Beehive base and red sets.
Non duplicates from beehive include one base matte Cheechoo /100 and two gold parallels of Naslund and Foy. Numbering for these cards are rumored to be between 15-25, though they are quite rare nonetheless.
#. 2005-06 Fleer Ultra
Well it appears this thread is following a theme here, because I finally pulled the trigger on acquiring a full set of Fleer Ultra with all of the SP rookies (1-271) along with complete sets of Difference Makers, Scoring Kings and Super Six inserts.
Aside from the completed sets, I was able to find a Rookie Uniformity Autograph Steen /25, 4-colour Scoring Kings Markus Naslund /50 , 3-colour Scoring Kings Jarome Iginla /50 and a beautiful Super Six dual coloured Mario Lemieux graded PSA 9!
#. 2005-06 UD McDonald's
The McDonald's release from 05-06 brings back great memories and a feeling of nostalgia. I sadly sold all of my McDonald's cards a few years back to help with my schooling so I was ecstatic to buy a master's set and recoup the cards I once had. The master's set includes the base cards from 1-51, with 51 being Crosby's rookie, 6 Checklists, NHL Next Generation (15 cards),Superstar Spotlight (10 cards), Goalie Factory (15 cards) and Top Scorers (15).
Aside from the masters set, I was able to acquire some tough redemption inserts including an NHL Goalie Gear Marc-Andre Fleury /50 and two NHL patches of Theodore and Naslund /25!
#. 2005-06 UD Ultimate
Only two from the famed Ultimate Collection second year edition. A tough gold base parallel of Bertuzzi /25 and a stunning 3-colour Endorsed Emblems Patch of Brenden Morrison /35.
#. 2005-06 Fleer Hot Prospects
I was able to pick up two multi colored swatched cards from the Hot Materials set that I've been chipping away at for a few years. But the best of the bunch are the White parallels I was able to find. The base and non RPA were each numbered to 10, while the RPAs were numbered to 5. The best of the lot is by far the 4-colour Kevin Bieksa.
#. 2005-06 UD The Cup
Historically the most sought after set release and the most prestigeous, there was no shortage of cards from The Cup that made their way into my collection.
First off is a Limited Logos Todd Bertuzzi with a great 4-colour patch /50 followed by a 3-colour Marcus Naslund Signature Patch /75. Next up is a Scripted Swatches Naslund /25, Jovanovski Gold Parallel Base card /25 and Base Patch Parallel Kovalchuk /10. The Kovalchuk patch parallel is the first of its kind in my collection and will always look to add more. Lastly is a pair of Kevin Bieksa 3-clr RPAs, on base /199 and its gold parallel /25. All really stunning cards, particularly in person.
Alright finally lets get to the top 20!
#20. 2005-06 UD Parkhurst #587 Facsimile Autograph Crosby RC (83/100)
At number 20 we have a card I needed to complete the 700-card Parkhurst Facsimile Auto set, each numbered to 100 copies. About a year ago I purchased a near complete set but was most notably missing the #587 Crosby RC. Since then I've had a few opportunities to acquire this card but the price just didn't make sense. Luckily one went up for auction and I ended up winning for the right price. I'm glad to put this set to bed.
If you wish to see the complete set just click the link to the album here.
#19. 2005-06 Beehive Mattered Materials Crosby (2-colour)
At number 19 we have a rookie year jersey card of Sidney Crosby, a two colour version as well. As the base rookie cards of his and Ovechkin's continue to climb, the other rookie year cards are becoming scarce as well. Happy to have found a 2-clr version for my collection.
#18. 2005-06 Markus Naslund "Vintage" Canucks Cards
At 18 is a unique category I created which I decided to name "Vintage" Naslund jersey/patch cards. The crew at Upper Deck made great use of a Naslund game used "skate" Canucks jersey from early into his Vancouver tenure across their products. We have seen the return of this jersey through the recent alternate and retro series but its was not common to see during 05-06.
The first three cards are all from the Ice release, and parallels of the Cool Threads series; Glass Jersey Parallel /100, Jersey and Autograph Parallel /35 and Patch /50.
The next two are from the Ultimate Release; Ultimate Jersey Patch /75, and my favorite, the Premium Patches /35. The Premium Patches series featured some of the best patches from all of Upper Deck's products and I would love to complete this set one day.
#17. 2005-06 ITG Ultimate R.O.Y Emblem Ovechkin (7/10)
Next up we have a 3-colour "star" patch from the emblem of the old Capitals logo. Really unique patch from arguably the greatest goal scorer of all time.
#16. 2005-06 ITG Ultimate Emblem Attic Keon (1/5)
My favorite set from the 05-06 ITG Ultimate product, this Dave Keon vintage Leafs emblem is no different. This is actually the first Keon card in my collection, and what a great time to add it as a spotllight has been placed on the greatest Leafs players of the past with Matthews setting the new franchise single goal record.
#15.2005-06 UD Victory Silver /250, Gold /100 and Black /5 Parallels
I decided to group the victory additions together, but the real reason it makes the top 15 is due to the Steen Victory Black /5. Incredibly rare card and I am always on the lookout for the others in the set.
Silver /250: Cooke, Morrison, Jovanovski and Sopel
Gold /100: Grier, Lang, LeClair, Niedermayer, Campoli, Leneveu and Foy
Black /5: Steen
#14. UD Canadian Fall Expo /10
I was able to find one particular seller that had a small lot of these Canadian Fall Expo cards, which contributed to the lion's share of the cards seen here. Key cards of note include the rookies of Cam Ward, Matt Foy and Alexander Steen. I am now only missing 3 YG cards from this set including both Crosbys and Kevin Dallman. The 15 new additions give me 181/250 in the set or roughly 72% complete.
#13. 2005-06 UD Artifacts Rookie Gold Alexander Steen (1/1)
Its not often I am able to find any Gold Parallel cards from the Artifacts series, but I had some luck this past quarter and added this true one-of-one rookie card of Alexander Steen. A tough find of the once highly touted Leafs prospect.
#12. 2005-06 UD Remarkable Artifacts Markus Naslund (1/1)
Speaking of true one-of-one Artifacts cards, I was also able to add this rare Marcus Naslund Remarkable Artifacts single patch autograph. The Remarkable series were all produced to be 1/1s and featured either one or two patch windows. The patches that were used were from the jersey manufacture's patch and this one displays one of the C's in CCM.
#11. 2005-06 UD Game Patches /15
This next set I have been working on for about 8 years now, and I am nowhere near finished, which is a combination of rarity mixed with a large checklist. For Series 1 I was able to acquire cards of Naslund, Morrison, Tootoo, Morrow and Henrik Sedin. For Series 2 I added Naslund, Hunter and Amonte.
Now onto the top 10!
#10. 2005-06 UD SP Game Used Set (1-190) + Update Set (191-240)
Starting off at number 10 is a complete set of SP Game Used Base including the update set which was packed into the rookie update product. I had previously never owned a copy of either the Crosby or Ovechkin rookies so to add the whole set in one shot is a huge plus for me. All the rookies in this set are numbered to 999. Notable rookies in the update set include Corey Crawford, Pekka Rinne and Mike Green.
To see the complete set please click the link here.
#9. 2005-06 UD Trilogy Set (1-220)
Next up is a complete Trilogy base and rookie set, with the rookies all being numbered to 999. This is another case in which I had never previously owned a copy of the Crosby or the Ovechkin rookies. What is pretty unique about this set is the use of the thick plexi-glass cards from numbers 90-170, these cards being numbered to 599. Great use of greats from the past including Howe, Gretzky and Patrick Roy.
To see the complete set please click the link here
#8. 2005-06 UD Shooting Stars Set (49 cards)
This next set was a unique offering of the full 49 cards from the Shooting Stars subset in UD series 1. The previous owner took great pride in finding unique jersey pieces which made for lots of multicolored swatches. The toughest of which was the incredibly rare SSP Jaromir Jagr, featured here in two colours. Another interesting note about this set was that the Rick Nash was never produced as the checklist states. Instead UD opted to replace him with Glen Murray, the only issue is that Murray was already included. This resulted in two different Glen Murray cards in this set, one using a Bruins jersey and the other using his 2004 NHL All Star jersey for the swatch pieces.
To view the complete set please click the link here.
#7. 2005-06 Fleer Ultra Rookie Uniformity Set (60 cards)
The next set is from the same seller as the Shooting Stars set. This set however might be even more impressive than the last. The Rookie Uniformity 60-card set features a 3-colour Ovechkin and the only two colour Lundqvist card I have ever seen.
To view the complete set please click the link here
#6. Upper Deck High Gloss /10
At number 6 is the my show-and-tell tradition of updating my high gloss set progress. Over the past 3 months I was able to add 11 new high gloss cards. No new Young Guns unfortunately although I was able to find a rookie nonetheless. Mike Green never had an official Young Guns rookie produced, so his base card from series 2 has been his default rookie, similar to the old Topps/O-Pee-Chee format of imbedded rookies in the base set. I had never even seen a copy of his HG version until being alerted to a facebook listing a few months ago. I quickly came to a deal and it now sits firmly in my set. The 11 new additions give me 254 HG of the 487 set or roughly 52% complete!
#5. 1951-52 Laval Dairy #1 Jean Beliveau
At number five is a truly unique find that I came across while pursuing my 05-06 card sets. I was offered a 1951 Laval Dairy pre-rookie card of Jean Beliveau that appears to be in great shape, especially for its age. I'm not 100% sure in how these cards were distributed, but given these were likely local to Laval, or even provincial wide, I can't imagine these are common to find. Its typical that in vintage sets, the first and last cards of the set see more wear and tear due to being at the ends of the deck while being handled at the time. With this being card number one of the set its truly an incredible find in what has been an amazing start to 2022.
#4. 2005-06 The Cup Legendary Cuts Doug Harvey LC-DH (2/5)
If you harken back to my previous show-and-tell thread in November 2021, the number one card on my list was a 2005-06 Legendary Cuts King Clancy from the Cup product. Never in my widest dreams did I believe I would be adding another card from that set, but here we are. At number 4 of the count down is the Doug Harvey cut autograph, the defenseman who held the blueline for the great Canadiens teams of the 50s. Both the Clancy and Harvey are both numbered to only 5 copies.
Now onto the top 3.....
#3. 1951-52 Laval Dairy #92 Jacques Plante (SGC 7.5)
Well not only was I able to add the Beliveau 1951-52 Laval Dairy card, but I also found the Jacques Plante pre-rookie card from his time with Shawinigan! This card is in better shape than the Beliveau with an SGC grade of 7.5. A truly rare card of one of hockey's greatest goaltenders.
#2. 2005-06 UD Powerplay Specialty Patches Martin Brodeur SP-MB (1/5)
At number two is an incredibly rare Martin Brodeur Specialty Patch from the powerplay series numbered 1/5. This is the only copy I have ever seen to date and its unlikely another will surface given the number of Brodeur collectors there are out there. What's particularly interesting about the patch on this Brodeur is the heat pressed material which makes up the patch. Upon doing some research, the Devils used this on some of their early 90's green and red jerseys, which matches Brodeur's rookie season. So its likely this card features early Brodeur memorabilia, possibly even a rookie jersey piece.
And Finally #1...
#1. 2005-06 The Cup Legendary Cuts Jacques Plante LC-JP (1/3)
A signature cut autograph from the Legendary Cuts 05-06 set of Jacques Plante! I don't really know what else to say about this card other than it is among the most prized cards that I own. This copy is numbered to just three cards, making it more rare than even the Harvey or King Clancy cut signatures from the set. A truly special card for any amateur hockey historian, like myself, to own this unique piece of history.
Well if you have made it this far, thank you for the time and please do not hesitate to contact me with information on cards I need or those you are looking to sell. Looking forward to what the second quarter of 2022 will bring, comments/feedback are welcome. Have a great weekend everyone!

#9. 2005-06 UD Trilogy Set (1-220)

#8. 2005-06 UD Shooting Stars Set (49 cards)

#7. 2005-06 Fleer Ultra Rookie Uniformity Set (60 cards)
The next set is from the same seller as the Shooting Stars set. This set however might be even more impressive than the last. The Rookie Uniformity 60-card set features a 3-colour Ovechkin and the only two colour Lundqvist card I have ever seen.
