www.lumberjackcards.com,
Howdy gang -
My apologies if this belongs in the Vintage section however I am looking for a broader look at vintage and collections and (frankly) I would like input from a wider swatch than just the folks who end up going into the Vintage section.
Late last week, I swung by the LCS for some supplies. There was a little extra loose change in my pocket so I knew there was a better than average chance that I would walk out with a box, few packs, singles etc but what I ended up leaving with was not expected. I dropped about $200 or so on a few vintage baseball and a Tim Horton graded card.
It was Jackie Robinson day around MLB so picking up a beautiful Jackie card did generate some excitement.
Anyway - this all got me poking around the vintage hockey marketplace. After a couple hours of digging, a few beers and a few notebooks of Seven style John Doe notebook scribble I am now fully ramped up to dive into the vintage world. I certainly have targeted HOF rookie cards and such but would also like to (foolishly) look at a long term set to work on for the next decade or so.
So - all that being said - what are some of your favorite Vintage sets and why. Is it design, is it the player pool, is it a noteworthy year?
Also - is there anything I should know to keep in mind specifically around counterfeit cards? Certainly I know enough to be dangerous regarding the Roy, Gretzky, and Orr (and probably some of the other big ones that aren't on the front of my brain at the moment) but are there particular sets that have been targeted, are there lesser known players to keep an eye out for or are there any runs that were just mass produced (similar to the Brett Hull rookies).
Thanks in advance for any help - hopefully I will have some pretty stuff to share over the coming days, weeks, months, years, etc.
