Vintage Grading Question

I have been tossing around the idea of sending my Jean Beliveau 1953/54 Parkhurst rookie card for grading. I am not so much interested in the grade... as I am the protection for such an old card.

From what I understand, PSA is a better "vintage" grading company... but I think their holders look cheap and ugly. Likewise, PSA requires you to have a membership/subscription to use their services.

I am thinking about using Beckett Vintage Grading (BVG) for this particular card. I know they aren't as established in the vintage grading arena, but their holders are much more secure and attractive.

Looking at the BVG population report, only 11 copies of this particular card have been graded by BVG:

6.5 = 1
6.0 = 0
5.5 = 0
5.0 = 2
4.5 = 1
4.0 = 2
3.5 = 0
3.0 = 2
2.5 = 1
2.0 = 1
1.5 = 1
1.0 = 0

Looks like some pretty tough grading standards by BVG.

Any thoughts?

I actually think you should grade it, it sure would look nice with the holder and all...
Any prediction what you would get?? Wip up a scan possibly??

Like mentioned above... just looking for card security... but I obviously don't expect it to grade at a 1.0 level. I have the scan at home... will post it up once I return home from work.

BVG generally grades easier than PSA. I prefer PSA, but that is because of their respect in the hobby. BVG holders are a lot stronger than PSA holders. I have heard of a few cases of PSA cases snapping in half in the mail.

So, if I was in your situation, I would go with BVG.

Wow!! That card is in great shape. You should get at least a 5 for that.

Why not SGC? The black insert would look great around that card. If that is a stain in the lower right, expect a 3 or so.

Jay, I am chomping at the bit on this thread. I have a very large vintage collection of Rangers cards dating back to the 1930's. Most are ungraded. IMO unless you plan on selling it, or if you are wondering about the cards authenticity why spend the $ on getting it graded? Also, if the card is gonna grade in the 3-4 range it won't enahnce the value tremendously. If it is gonna grade a 5-6 it might be worth it. Hey it's your call, but I would leave it alone. Mike
