The Consignment Shelf at my local shop has 2 vintage cards that I might pick up just so I can say I have them, but I honestly don't know much about anything pre-1990. I don't doubt that they are real since the shop owner said this person is a longtime collector of all sports, but I'm just wondering if there are things I should look for regardless, or how do I make sure they aren't reprints especially. The cards are:

1951-52 Parkhurst - Ken Mosdell RC

This one is in overall okay shape. I'd probably give it a VG (3 or 4). The front is in good shape, but the back has all sorts of staining on it. Not sure how these were originally packaged, but it could be wax or packaging stains.

1961-62 Parkhurst - John McKenzie

This one looks really good. I'd probably give it a 7 maybe an 8.

Regardless of the possible grades (which I'm not really into), I'm just curoius on your thoughts about picking these up. The price seems a little high on the Mosdell for the condition, but the price seems good for the Mckenzie, so if I got both I'd feel okay about it.

Thanks

Not a huge following besides set collectors and the condition has to be high in order for some collectors to buy it. All depends on what your intentions are? Go with your gut and if you feel the Mckenzie is the better buy, snap it up!!

Good luck on your decision

I have a pretty extensive Vintage collection, both Raw and Graded. Is the '51 Parkie has wax/glue stains on the back that is due to the card being put into an album, that was common back in the day. If so, the card would NOT grade a 3 or 4, because the surface grade would get a 0 or 1 and the overall grade can only be one point higher than a sub-grade so the card would get a 1 or 2. For me, I only collect Parkies with a clean back, but that's just me. Like anything else, collect what you like... Mike

Thanks for the tips Mike. I didn't realize the "blank" back of a card could affect it's condition so much.
