My brother and his wife have a one day stopover here in Calgary on their way down to Mexico, so he my Dad, and myself are going to the game to see the Lions take on the Stamps tonight. Really looking forward to it.

Ticats, Bombers to bid farewell to Ivor Wynne

The Ticats are home to face the Bombers on Saturday afternoon, as they look to close out the final regular season game at Ivor Wynne Stadium with an important divisional win.

Every team in the East remains in the race for a playoff berth, and for these two division foes Saturday afternoon presents a chance to move one step closer to getting some post-season action in 2012.

For Henry Burris and the Black and Gold, they are looking to give their fans one last regular season game to remember at their old barn and bounce back from a loss where they played one of their best performances of the season on a snow-covered field at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.

An impressive late comeback effort came up just short on a last-play field goal attempt, when the ball slipped off the tee forcing holder Andy Fantuz to pull it away, ending the game in a 34-32 Stampeders win.

Burris threw for 354 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a late score to Chris Williams on a long last-minute drive to give the Tabbies a chance to tie it up.

The Stamps forced an incompletion on the two-point conversion attempt, but Hamilton recovered an onside kick from Luca Congi that couldn’t have been more perfect. Burris took over again, leading the Ticats deep into scoring range thanks to another long completion to Williams. But it wasn’t enough in the end.

With a return trip to Ivor Wynne coming quickly though, followed by an invasion of the Rogers Centre to duel with the hated Argos, this week Burris and the ‘Cats have their focused pinned squarely on Winnipeg, and the task of getting into the playoffs.

“I’ll have to deal with it when I go home in the off-season, but right now, it’s all about doing what we need to do to get into these playoffs,” said Burris of Saturday’s loss.

Argos look to contain Sheets, Riders at Mosaic

The Toronto Argonauts hit the road this weekend looking to clinch a home playoff game, as they clash with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Boatmen continue to be in control of their own destiny despite some late-season troubles, as they need just one win to clinch their first playoff berth since 2010.

After a 44-32 loss at home to the Bombers last weekend, the road doesn’t get any easier for the Argos, who hope to host their first playoff game since the 2007 East Final.

The good news for the Argos is All-Star pivot Ricky Ray returned under centre last weekend and played as though he never even left, throwing for 383 yards and four touchdown passes in arguably his best game as an Argo so far.

On the other hand, with temperatures expected to drop well below freezing on Saturday along with the usual heavy gusts of winds of Mosaic Stadium, it might be difficult for the Argos to try and win this one on the arm of Ray alone.

That means the result could come down to each team’s ability to run the ball, and stop the run.

While Chad Kackert had just 50 yards, he did it on eight carries and boasted an average of more than six yards per carry. Head Coach Scott Milanovich simply opted to rely on a red-hot Ray in the second half, which didn’t appear to be a bad choice.

It's a good thing the Lions last 2-3 games will all be out of the weather because they did not look comfortable last night. I will admit that it definitely felt colder than minus 7 last night though.

Esks visit Montreal gunning for playoff spot

No one on the Montreal Alouettes expects it quite so easy this time when they face the Edmonton Eskimos.

On Aug. 17, the Alouettes came out of a bye week to take a 28-0 lead in the second quarter in Edmonton before coasting to 38-25 win, cooling off an Eskimo squad that has started the CFL season winning four of its first six games.

The Eskimos visit Percival Molson Stadium on Sunday looking to clinch a playoff spot against the Alouettes, who have locked up first place in the East Division.

"Maybe the first time we played them they were 4-2 and they faced an Alouettes team that was 3-3 and had to have it," said Montreal coach Marc Trestman. "We can't show up like we did against Winnipeg (three weeks ago), without an edge, and allow someone to come into our house and do that."

"We have a lot of respect for that (Edmonton) team. They play extremely hard. And they've got to have it. It makes for an interesting game. We have to continue to improve and feel that we need to have it as well."

An Edmonton victory would ensure that there will be a crossover team - either the Eskimos or Saskatchewan - from the West in the East semifinal.

The Eskimos, with 39-year-old Kerry Joseph at quarterback, have lost four in a row in Montreal and have won only three of their last ten games there.

But although the Alouettes are coming off road victories in Toronto and Regina, they are looking to erase the memory of their last home game, when the Blue Bombers with third-stringer Joey Elliott at quarterback beat them 27-22.
