When things start to go wrong, obviously fingers get points at franchise management, players, etc etc.

I hear some weird things that the sports radio guys in this city complain about from time to time, but there are a few that always rise to the top.

My favorite is the continued insistence not just amongst the sports radio guys, but the fans too for the Canucks not drafting Milan Lucic. I've even heard a couple people at work go so far as to blame Mike Gillis for this when...

-The Canucks didn't have a draft pick in the 2nd round that year, and drafted 14th and then 80-something. Lucic was selected 50th I believe. How many people would've gone way off the board like that to draft (or leave) Lucic? It's not like he's Thomas Hickey or something

-Lucic was drafted in 2006, a full two years before Mike Gillis even started out with the Canucks.

People

What stories do you guys have? Would love to hear from Edmonton and Calgary fans especially.

If any team out there has a grudge regarding Lucic being drafted, it's the Habs. We had the 49th pick that year and took Ben Maxwell.

Others:

Despite leading the Habs to 1st and 3rd place finishes in his 2nd tenure with the Habs, very few people actually like Michel Therrien.

Mario Tremblay. Nuff said.

Scott Gomez. Nuff said.

Rene Bourque remains a very unpopular figure, particularly since he was acquired for the rather popular Mike Cammalleri.

Many fans this year dislike the reliance upon Doug Murray and Francis Bouillon instead of giving Jarred Tinordi and Nathan Beaulieu a legit chance. Indeed, poor Nathan has bounced back and forth between Montreal and Hamilton so many times that it's sickening, really.

How about drafting David Fischer out of high school over Claude Giroux?

This weekend at the show, I overhead a bunch of Canucks fans grousing about missing out a certain pick two years ago and drilling Gillis for the horrible oversight.

Player was a late second round pick and the comment was something along the line of "WE PASSED ON HIM NOT ONCE BUT TWICE - HOW CAN YOU KEEP YOUR JOB AFTER THAT!" - my thought as I walked by that likely 29 teams passed on the player twice and that many would be canned if that were the justification.

Upon returning home I discovered that I was wrong (Brandon Saad was indeed drafted 43rd overall and not late in the second round as I had thought) and the angry mob was wrong as well as the Nucks only passed on him once to draft Jensen. Either way, we were more than a Saad away from making the playoffs and I would say the jury is still out on how who won that draft.

Either way - had a good laugh at the time.

In LA I overheard 2 people in line saying Dean Lombardi should never have drafted Jack Johnson...

Jack Johnson was drafted by Carolina, and even before DL was GM of the Kings

it happens in all sports, i am huge Niners fan and get constant complaints about not drafting certain players the last few years including Richard Sherman, Keenan Allen, among others. Not every GM is going to get right all the time, hindsight is 20/20. Who saw someone like Tom Brady winning 3 Super Bowls being drafted 199th? Literally almost no one. Every team passed on him several times. GMs get a lot of blame but sometimes picks just do not pan out.

Don't bring this topic to Leafs fans.. doesnt matter what the team does.. no one is happy..

Yep. That one also hurts a bunch.

I once did up a list of players from the 1990's/early 2000's of who they draft and who they could have drafted. It's a miracle I didn't go into a deep depression and switch allegiances after reading it. Team's gotten so much better since Timmins came on board.

how many teams passed on marty broduer I wonder eh, there are some teams out there that would have had there fortunes changed had they taken him first overall, mainly calgary but hey trevor kidd, sure no prob future franchise goalie right there, lol

Try being a Sens fan. We're about to lose a point-per-game centre. The fans have been on him for years now and yet he has produced at a top-10 pace over the course of his career

Canucks fans are the weirdest bunch. The same people here at work that complained to me before the trade deadline that Luongo needed to go are now the same ones complaining Luongo should never have been traded.

Daniel Briere and Chris drury.....

Ville Leino and Brad Boyes.....

Disfunctional at best..Keep the bad ones and allow the good ones to go

To this day Minnesota fans hate Norm Green for moving the North Stars to Dallas. I knew it was happening 2 years prior when they changed their logo from the "N and star" to the word STARS. That could be used anywhere. Plus the fact that I had season tickets and the building was always only half full the last few years. Totally a business decision.

But you know what....we keep saying it to this day.... "Norm Green S U C K S !!!"

Just a weird fact of life and we'll always be bitter.

But now... GO WILD!!! :D

I'm still bitter the Maple Leafs had Ken Dryden as their president at one point in time... talk about a human rain delay at a press conference... yeesh.

For Ken Dryden, there's no such thing as a sound bite - he only believes in sound mouthfuls.

Can't stand the guy... hence why I hold it against my Leafs for ever hiring him.
