Afternoon All,

Hey I know this will sound kinda random. But this is the first time its happened to me.

There is a card I want and the seller is in CA. So I went to the BIN, even tho I felt it was a tad high. (I figured I could live with it) Then I see I have to pay CA Tax on top of it, which would be about $11 additional.

Instantly I am rethinking before I make this purchase.

Now dont get me wrong, I understand taxes. But I dont recall ever paying taxes on singles. Maybe on boxes, cases, supplies..stuff like that.

Maybe just my luck as a buyer, but it seems odd to me.

I realize if they are a business and totally understand to do things by the books. But couldnt an Ebay seller just "Say" they need to charge tax and then pocket it? This would give them a huge financial advantage on Ebay.

To the card shop owners on the boards I would love to hear some input. Of course from everyone else too. :)

Thanks
Chance

if the seller is in the same state as you and is running a business he has to collect/pay business.

You're likely buying from a store and not an individual.

I think if it's a EBay Business(Store) They have to charge a Tax now Per California new tax(Uncle Jerry Brown's plan to drive businesses out of this state)) law..Good luck

As of right now are businesses only required to charge taxes for sales in state? I assume the person might have to provide proof they have a business to ebay??? or least I would assume if doing it wrongly it could come back and bite them...not really worth it for an addition 8% (at least IMO). You could always inquire about their business..see if they have a store, but of course they could be home based.

I'm pretty sure if it's in state, they have to charge tax. If it's out of state, the buyer has to report it on their taxes and owe the gov't. I don't think anyone does this unless it's a big purchase like a car or something.

This has been the case for a long time and is nothing new - there is a supplier that I buy all of my toploaders and such that is based in Vancouver WA and I pay tax on everything I buy from them.

I can't speak for CA specific but anything you buy within state from a tax paying entity is required to pay taxes on your transaction - therefore, you pay taxes on your transaction.
