When you buy a box of Pokemon cards... Do you get a full set?

My daughter buys loose packs all of the time, but it was thinking of grabbing her a full box at the Expo. How does a box typically break down? Do you get a full set? How many special cards do you normally get, aside from the one per pack shiny ones? And how much should I expect to pay for a newer release?

Any help is appreciated.

reach out to LSOH - Eli.. he and his cuz work in this magic thang

Quick answer is no - all of the different 'rarity' of cards are like inserts for a sportscard box. Rares may be 1 per pack, uncommons 2 per pack, ultra rares 1 per box, etc.

No different than a sportscard box, you'd need to look at the card list, size of set and rarity beforehand to figure out what your chances are of getting a specific card, or finishing a set. Given the Ultra rares still make up part of the 'set' I'd say not much chance of completing out of a box...

Ahhhhhh, I see you if the card says /100, 80 might be common, ten rare, five ultra rare, etc.? Is there a portion considered a base set, or no?

It depends on what you consider base set...
For example if you only consider the cards 1-200 of a regular UD series 1 as base set then the commons (non-shiny) for pokemon could be your base set, but if you count young guns with the 1-200 as base set, then you need to include the rares (shiny).

Also not sure if it is still the same way but in the first few series the ultra rares (shiny) were the first cards of the set (1/153, 2/153, etc)

No - no base set in the sport card sense. If there are 115 cards, that will include commons, uncommons, rares, rare holos and ultra rares...

Here's an example of the Black/ White set card list:

To put it in sport card terms, think of it with a base set with SP's, some of which are ridiculously hard (one per case) to get.

...and I know this because my daughter loves buying Pokémon cards too, and I was curious how it worked.

...keep in mind too - if you buy her a whole box, she'll have a lot of different cards, and likely won't realize she's 'missing' cards from a set... You can give her packs for doing chores around the house. :)

ok, starting to make sense now, although from that list it seems that , example, cards 1 and 2, and cards 15 and 16, are the same? ,

At the end of the day it looks like there is no building any form of 1-100 form of set out of a single box. With 10 cards per pack, I suppose there is a pile of doubles the, would this be fair to say?

You read my mind.....lol.

Each card has different abilities (for when playing the game) even if they are the same characters.

...and different artwork - they do look like entirely different cards - only the character name is the same. It would be like having two cards of the same player in a set.

But yes, you will get a lot of doubles, especially on the commons.

I had one box for Evelyn where I doled out for chores and that lasted two and a half months, and it was a lot cheaper than buying individual packs. She ended up giving away a lot of the extra cards.

You should bring Evelyn to trade day next Sunday. I'll bring Monica, they can trade up a storm, lol.
