Where did this come from

have a friend who has this card, im interested in it, but we can't figure out where the patch came from.
on the back of the card it does say it was used in an official NHL game.

any help would be appreciated.

Its from the "NHL 2000" Logo on Jerseys during the 99-00 season.

His Wikipedia page makes reference to a brief comeback attempt in the 1998 preseason but nothing at all beyond that.
