By best athlete i mean who do you think dominated/dominates their respective sport like no other player has.

my top three would be:

Tiger Woods
Wayne Gretzky
GSP

interested in hearing your opinions

I don't know how GSP could be the most dominant in his sport, didn't he get KO'd by a has been? Brock Lesner is more dominant in his short time in MMA, can anyone even hurt the guy? If you're looking at body of work, Randy Couture is miles ahead of GSP or anyone else for that matter when it comes to MMA.

Haile Gebrselassie, Michael Phelps and Michael Jordan.

And if your list doesnt only include human athletes I'd add Northern Dancer.......

The best ATHLETE, not taking into account intangibles or intelligence, is probably Lebron James. Just an all around freak, nevermind how big he is.

After thinking about this a little bit more, I think a lot has to do with exactly what you are asking - are you asking "Who is the best athlete ever" or "Who dominates/dominated their sport like no other"

Athlete - Jim Thorpe, Bo Jackson, Dion Sanders, Dave Winfield, proably some really studly decathalete.

Dominant - Thorpe, Wilt, Jordan, Ruth, Pele, Phelps, Gretz, Armstrom, Ali, Edwin Moses, Alexander Karelin, LT, Tyson, Kobayashi (is competiive eating a sport...ha!)

Gsp is more dominate then those 2 because he is the best mma wrestler in the sport. He has cleared his division already, he has revenged both of his losses in devistating fashon. Honestly IMO no one can touch him in the welter weight division. Corture was amazing but still had many bad losses. Time will tell with lesnar but he won't be able to out muscle carwin the way he did Mir

How does that work? I like Lesnar but he has only really had 3 fights with top competition. He beat Couture (40 pounds lighter) and split 2 matches with Mir. Not really that dominating.

And Couture, although an incredible athlete especially at his age, I would hardly consider an 18-10 mma record dominating. GSP is 20-2. GSP has now won 7 fights in a row in the UFC and his last loss was over 3 years ago. Those 7 fights he fought Koscheck, Hughes, Serra, Fitch, Penn Alves, Hardy. Five of those 7 are considered top 10 in the WW division and Penn is considered top 3 in the LW division.

Also if you take away decision victories which usually arent dominating Couture is 10-9 GSP is 13-2.

yes LeBron is a wonder
Jordan is too.
I think lance armstrong should be mentioned
bo jackson as well

Tiger c'mon has anybody looked at john daley , how much of an athlete do you have to be to be an elite golfer.lets see tiger run 10 miles when he's not beoing chased by his ex or his harem

Pele: People worship him
MJ: Need I say more?
Gretzky: He has his own record book
Usain Bolt: He shattered records looking behind him and slapping his chest. BEAST!

GSP IS a BAMF
Micheal phelps was not mentioned, but he is practically half fish himself.
Jordan then Lebron
Gretzky has every record..and he ate the most wings
Micheal Johnson was rediculously fast.
But Cael Sanderson is by far the best athlete ever period. Look him up if you dont know ...

BO JACKSON!!!!!! most definitely

As far as Hockey there's no comparison
Bobby Orr even Gretz has said his only
regret is that he always wanted to play like
Bobby Orr. The way Orr played not only
changed the game but he was an incredible force
on the ice.

Tyson was insane up until 1990. He was the most feared
man on the Planet at the time. Ali was the Greatest but
for a stretch Tyson was just silly, I loved to watch him come
out, Nothing but business and destroy....then he got married
and it was all downhill from there...
but Joe Louis in my book would be the most dominant boxer ever.

Jim Brown was unstoppable on the football field, the only other
player like that was Earl Campbell. Sure there was great running backs
but Dominant ones that just seemed unstoppable, there weren't that many.

MMA there's been a lot of guys who've just been unstoppable for a streatch.
Royce Gracie early on was a living legend, same with Bas Rutten
more recently Matt Huges, Chuck Liddel,l GSP
The guy I think is a total freak and is reaching that legend mark is Anderson Silva, he's 11-0 (he hasn't lost a fight since 2004) with wins over Forrestt, Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin can't wait to see him start to take on some other top talents. I'd love to see him drop and fight GSP or GSP move up.

Baseball there's been a lot of hitters that were dominant, but I hate to say it but there was a time that Barry Bonds was just sick....he was going out of the strike zone jacking home runs. I hate the guy but he was probably the greatest player in the past couple decades. Pitchers I'd put Roger Clemens up there. But it'd be hard to argue against Babe Ruth or Ted Williams or Ty Cobb

Basketball Currently LaBron, but Shaq was unstoppable for many years, and the only player I could even compare him to was Wilt, Wilt was a force. Sure Jordan was but not his entire career. Kobe pretty much has been the man since he got to the NBA. Similar to Shaq until the past couple of years.

Auto Racing there's no contest Richard Petty, I forget his record but he won a crazy amount of races in a row, so many that it was more news that he didn't win one but came in second. No one will ever dominate racing like Petty did, or even come close.

Gold Jack was the best, Tiger is now and during his best stretch he was the most Dominant. Currently I could care less if he ever plays again. He will and does but with all that has happened he just ruined watching golf for me. To mention him and Jack in the same sentence seems to be an insult to Jack.

Soccer Pele would be my vote

But Lance Armstrong, never mind the cancer, 7 Tour De France's in a row.....that will never be done again or even close to it.

with so many different sports it's hard to say who the most Dominant is or was.....
but my vote would go Babe Ruth...dude was a great pitcher too.
Second would be Bobby Orr....not only great offense, but great Defense (that's a word Gretz doesn't know how to spell) and made everyone else better. Orr was unstoppable he'd skate from one end of the ice to the other go around or through the entire opposition to score.....and worst he made it look so easy.
