I was thinking of doing this little project later on this year. Getting an auto card of the greatest players to play their respective sport.
2 sports are obvious:
Hockey-Gretzky (although some might argue Orr is the greatest)
Basketball-Jordan
Who do you guys think would be the greatest players in football and baseball?
In my opinion baseball could go to a number of guys. Mantle, Ruth, DiMaggio etc. Football Im not really sure about but Im leaning towards Payton or Marino. What do you guys think?

I would think Ruth would be a must for baseball. Football-wise, there are several you could go with: Marino, Montana, Barry Sanders, Jim Brown, Jerry Rice, **** Butkus. Really, you couldn't go wrong.

Why so much continued love for Marino?? Many of his passing records are now owned by Brett Favre and he never won a Super Bowl. He's not even the greatest QB, let alone the greatest ever.

I may be a bit biased though, look at my avatar.

here is Mount Sportsmore as made by me :D

The 4 Bs

End of discussion

Only people born after 1970 think Jordan is the best ever

(I'm looking at you Scott [newfiecomicguy1]) ;)

DrJ.....not even the greatest streetball player. Is he even in the top ten NBA players all-time?:D The guys born befor 1970 probably couldn't get use to watching basketball on colour tvs.

Jordan and Wilt (expect to pay over $1000 for Wilt's official graph). probably better off picking a different player.

Gretzky and Orr

Ruth and Mays

Elway and Rice (my favorites haha)

Dr J???

That sir is Bill Russell!!

Pfft Dr J - you sound like my wife!!

/They have colour TV now?? Why wasn't I told about this!!

Just go with your "Personal Best" - this could go round and round forever, especially in baseball and football.

I would go this -

Hockey - Gretz
Basketball - Jordan
Baseball - Ted Williams
Football - LT on defense and Walter Payton on offense
Golf - Tiger
Professional Wrestling - Das Wunderkind

Funny, I was askin myself the same question, this week.

Wich football and baseball players are the Gretzky and Orr of their respective sports, i.e. wich of them still draw collectors to spend big bucks on their stuff many years after their retirement.

In football, Joe Montana was the first name that came to my mind.
Baseball, Ruth was easy. My second choice would have been DiMaggio or Ted Williams.

Football I'd even throw Walter Payton's name into the ring. Baseball I'd have to go with Babe Ruth.

Football has to be Montana...He's the best QB to ever play the game

Baseball I'd go with Ruth....We all know of his stats with the bat but look at his pitching numbers....Career ERA of 2.28....107 complete games in 148 starts...The guy was an all around stud!!!!.....And he did it all drunk to boot!!!

Haha you know what I didn't even look at it. I was thinking you were the DRJ fan but that was Lisa haha my bad. You are close to the best but you still fell 3 or 4 short:dance:

Looking at many sports publications on sports the general opinion seems to be Jim Brown in football. He's often listed as number 1 and never drops below number 3 on any list. In basketball my opinion would be MJ or Wilt as well. Gretzky is a no brainer in hockey. The only name that could come close to me is Gordie Howe. Baseball is a tougher nut. Ruth, DiMaggio, Williams, you could even argue Mantle, Gehrig, Ripkin Jr., Koufax. I think the magical aura surrounding Ruth makes him the winner although an auto of him will cost you your kidneys.

You could try a modern and historical approach and satisfy more angles except your wallet.

i was actually thinking of doing a more modern approach. any of the baseball hofers are going to cost a mortgage payment.

The list, as I see it:

Hockey: Gretzky
Baseball: Ruth
Football: Jim Brown
Basketball: Bill Russell
Golf: Tiger

and of course, Dodgeball: Patches O'Houlihan

:)
