I now believe Wang has told Snow to throw in the towel on the 2010-11 season already. Wang and his real estate and developing partners are not getting the go ahead for their Lighthouse project and Wang is cheaping out on the team to pressure the city.

The Islanders weren't going to make the playoffs, but to trade their best defenseman this year, to the Canadiens for a 2011 Compensatory Second Round Selection as well as a Conditional Fifth Round Pick in 2012 doesn't make sense.

I can't beleive it's Wisniewski's 3.25M salary. They still have about 12M in salary cap space. I've watched 28 of the 34 games the Isles have played this year and he's probably been the most consistant player. Just when they began playing okay hockey and may get Okposo back soon, they pull the trigger with this stupid trade IMO.

It may be tough to be a Leaf fan, but it is equally challenging to be an Islander fan with Wang as an owner and Snow at the helm.

I suppose I'll hope for a good 1st round draft pick and look towards a better 2011-12 season.

I wish the NHL or NHLPA had some power in enforcing common hockey sense.:|:|:|

Its not that bad a trade, in my opinion (and I'm an Isles fan). Wisniewski was gone at seasons end any ways and their young d-men have been playing pretty good, let them have some pp time. It now frees them up to pick up so someones garbage (maybe Rolston and a 2nd round pick for a 4th round pick). Then they would be up 3 draft picks, not too shabby. If they make no other moves than it is kind of a dumb move but no way Wisniewski was signing in Long Island as a UFA this summer anyways.

I beleive Wisniewski would have been a RFA at the end of the year.

He was the diamond in the rough with Streit out and now they are going to rely on rookies and have no idea of the picks they may get.

If history shows us anything, Wang and the Isles GM's have a very poor record on making logical deals and having them work out without costing 10's of millions or trading the player away because they don't perform.

They get Tavares 1st overall 2 years ago and they don't trade or purchase any UFA's last year or this year for him to work with other than Moulson. Too much cap room both years to say there weren't any options available.

It appears that I'm the only one that has this perspective on the trade. I suppose we'll have to wait a few years to see if the draft picks come into play and help improve the team. Maybe they got Wisniewski to send a message to Subban?

I'm far more suprised that there are actually Islander fans out there :) It's funny, the league does everything in their power to stop Jim Basille from having a franchise, yet they let Wang still operate one.

A bad team gets rid of a decent cap hit for draft picks.

Wisnew was not guaranteeing a playoff spot on the isle, and he actually had some value. Only made sense to move him while they could get something.

I get why you are upset but it's not like they traded a franchise defenseman for spare parts - they let a guy go who they weren't interested in keeping and got something in return for him. There is a reason he's been with four teams in four years.

im mixed on this trade. our points leader, yet unreliable defending one on one.

i knew Wisniewski was not a top 4 defensemen. however the islanders expected him to be the number one with Streit out. too much expectations.

in the end its a wash. we traded a third rounder for him and got back a 2nd and a 5th.

his value would not get any higher really, except maybe around the deadline. he was not going to resign with the islanders. who would with the mickey mouse operation they have going.

James was a pending UNRESTRICTED free agent:

Chances are, the Isles knew they couldn't re-sign him (perhaps his agent indicated as much).

So they traded him. This stuff happens every year. Team missing the playoffs will trade a pending UFA for picks. Common place in the NHL.

i think it was smart of the Isles to gear themselves in the direction of draft picks. with exception of a few players, everyone currently in the lineup (and management) certainly isn't helping the situation so getting rid of them certainly couldn't hurt it much either.

Have Wis on my fantasy team and I was praying he'd be traded.

I can see why the Islanders did what they did. He's unrestricted at the end of this season and a very talented player who is going to command some $.
