Why?

Yeah, I personally think you are right in asking why...I'd never get an IP auto on a card like that. It happens now and then. There are a few collectors (usually casual) who think it is a good idea, and will increase the value of the card. They'd be wrong.

Even if the auto does get authenticated, I would never buy it like that. Imo, authentication is a joke. It's only as credible as the person saying it is authentic, and I have seen some hideous pieces of garbage get authenticated.

With that said, even if I was standing there when Dion signed it, I still wouldn't pay a premium for it. In fact, I'd pay less than market value only. To me, the card is defaced by any markings that are not supposed to be there.

Some people just really don't understand the hockey card market. Whether that Phaneuf is legit or not, the auto makes the card worth not more than $5 to me (including shipping).
I saw a Paul Stastny Rookie UD Patch /15 that someonejust did that to too. I just couldn't believe anyone could be that stupid.
I'm not saying it's stupid to get an ip auto, and i'm not even saying it's stupid to get an ip auto on a card as nice/rare as that, if it's your thing. But be 110% positive that the card will not leave your possession until they put you in a box, because if you ever try to sell it, odds are no one will be willing to give you anything for it.

If you want to get a card signed, why not go with a base card, or even a common jersey card? To have a rare patch signed is mind boggling...unless you plan to keep it for your collection.

This seller got this auto last year. It was discussed heavily on the Beckett board at the time. I believe they claimed to have got it at the SaddleDome after practice one day. Everyone asked the same question....."why?" The seller honestly thought having an auto on it was a value booster....and evidently still does as per the $250 BIN on it ;(....
A large number of rookie collectors dont understand that an auto without a COA is not a good thing......I have a feeling they may not get $250 for that one.......

I don't see anything wrong with getting an auto on any card if you intend to keep it in your pc. I've done it because I have no intention of selling it/them. And if for some crazy reason I have to sell them off I know right away the card will be de-valued.

If it was legit (and why would you bring a card like that to the Saddledome in the first place?), some folks who aren't really in the know just think it'll increase the value of the card tenfold and have no idea that most of us wouldn't buy it for BV, let alone more. A shame to have that happen to such a nice card.

I don't see a problem with it like others have said if you are going to keep it for your PC but trying to sell it is just silly.

So it's pretty much agreed that no one here would buy the card. It doesn't have a certified auto on it which to us, devalues the heck out of it. But, to some guy surfing on Ebay, not really into hockey cards but sees this card of his favorite Flame, he might make a decent offer. If the seller can get something decent for it good on him. I just hope that he knows it most likely won't be 250.

The reality of it imo is that if a grilled cheese sandwich that looks like Elvis can sell, then so can this. It just takes the right buyer.

Some people just really don't understand the hockey card market.

That pretty much sums it all up.

I think IP's are for personal value only. Its for yourself to enjoy and give you a reminder that you met the player, shook hands and got the autograph. It is not a way to make an extra buck or so.

i would only do that if i collected phanuef, then it be a nice card for my self, but other than that its stupid.

Nice auto! :D:rolleyes:

I was emailing back and forth with the current owner of the 05/06 The Cup Black Rainbow Filppula 1/1 a few weeks ago, and she asked for my opinion on getting it signed at an upcoming event!!:eek: I've been chasing this card around for over 2 years, so after nearly falling off of my chair (literally), I tactfully pleaded with her to leave the card as/is, but told her that ultimately it's her card to do with what she pleases. I just made sure that she understood that if she did decide to get it signed, and ever decided to sell it, she would likely lose about 95% of her investment.

"If the phaneuf was autoed from the set, it would be /10, and woth way more, and once i get it slabbed, if this auction doesnt sell, it might be worth upwards of 200 possibly 300$. it is numbered 11/60."

Or about $2, possibly $3. But close.
