Will unused SPA Spectrum RCs hold value?

I would guess that they dip once the first 50 sets are completed. would guess that they will stay fairly steady after those first 50 though.

Sell now and rebuy it later when the gold sets are gone if you still want the card.

A bunch of the level 3s have more than doubled in the past week.

I estimate there are 200 of each level 3 printed.

They will drop in value, but they'll keep some value. I remember the days when the parallels of FW cards like the FW Limited of Kovalchuk were among the hottest cards in the hobby. With scarcity, correct design and brand reputation (SPA is one of the hottest brands in the hobby for like 20 years), there will always be some demand for the biggest names.

I think UD did a good move with their contest. People are talking about these cards and take notice of them.

If you collect the entire set of 99 Spectrum FX cards, UD will give you a copy of card #100 which is Auston Matthews. If you are one of the first 50 people to complete the entire set, you also get a gold version of the set. The Level 3 RC Spectrums fall, maybe one in every 20 boxes (can't recall the odds... 1:360 packs I believe though) and there are nine different ones

I don't know guys... if there are only a small number of unredeemed ones, they may maintain a premium for high demand players. We could be talking single digit numbers that go unscratched on some of the Level 3's. It's going to depend on the desire for the Auston Matthews card.

I'll be curious to see the demand for scratched versions. Kinda like guys that collect traditional redemption cards. I'm putting the set together, so hopefully someone wants scratched ones!

It's too bad they didn't release print runs on the spectrums and then the redemptions. We'd be able to see how many (potentially) of the scratched and unscratched cards exist. The demand in the end though for unscratched versions will likely come from player collectors... so we'll see what happens.

Cory thanks alot for taking time explaining this to me!!! Very interesting!!

I picked up an Eichel Spectrum (unscratched) for my PC, but haven't been following this bounty business, other than to know it exists. How has the hobby been defining these cards condition-wise? I bought my Eichel unscratched, as I didn't want it altered in any way. Wouldn't a scratched off card be considered significant surface damage? I can't imagine one would grade well, or that a person would want a card that someone else defaced. Am I wrong? Just curious.

Obviously graders won't want the scratched cards, but there are definitely player collectors that will want a copy of both...and I'll be happy to oblige!

From an article that was in the SMR regarding the 1980-81 Topps cards with scratch off areas (Original Article):

It's important to note, however, that PSA does not automatically reduce the grade of a card if it has been scratched, nor is the card automatically given a qualifier.

"Technically, PSA does not downgrade the card for having the box scratched off," noted Joe Orlando, PSA president. "What our graders will downgrade for is if the act of scratching has left any visible damage in the area."

And there's a good chance that rubbing a coin over the card will cause surface damage and leave some black residue. So it's not surprising that it's more difficult to obtain PSA GEM-MT 10 examples of 1980 Topps Hockey cards than it is of their O-Pee-Chee counterparts that don't have the black scratch-off feature.
