Would you still collect hockey cards if hockey ceased to exist?

I stumbled upon this thread on Blowout posted by Tanner and I wanted to post this here on HI as well. I thought it was an interesting topic given the time we're currently facing.

Would you still collect hockey cards if hockey ceased to exist forever?

For me, nothing would change as my PC's are well established already and I don't "need" to be watching hockey games to get me amped up about collecting.

Most of the stuff in the past is heads and shoulders better than whatever is current. You can see the demand for 90s cards spiking. If no one created hockey cards moving forward, there is enough looking back to keep the hobby going for a long time.

Most of my collection is HHOF members and other retired players. I'm sure the retro sets would still be made so I would continue adding to my collection.

Very true. I think there would be more 'collectors' in the traditional sense rather than jumping on the latest/greatest rookie cards and looking to sell.

Sure would! Wouldn’t affect my 2003-04 project at all, and still tons of rare Hjalmarsson, Slavin, etc. cards to find.

I would collect still as all my focuses are impacted zero by anything going on. But I think it would absolutely hinder or stop building future generations of collectors.

And if it was only hockey done, I'd be bummed, but overall fine since baseball has overtaken hockey as the #1 focus in our household. I imagine we'd follow the NBA more as a secondary sport to bridge the winter months.

This. I'm the guy who's stuck in the past in just about every aspect of life. I collect a guy who's been retired for almost 20 years, and the pandemic is proving that I don't need to be watching hockey to want to collect the cards. I would probably collect them as symbols of good times gone by.
