Yet another UD mistake!

The Kovalev could be from the Penguins, but I highly doubt it since UD has been using Habs patches the last 2-3 seasons.

*edit* it's possible the Samsonov and Kovalev are swapped too since almost all of Samsonov's jerseys/patches are from the Bruins. No way UD bought a Samsonov jersey from the Habs, Canes or Hawks.

Again, have to say....

How many 1000s and 1000s of patches does UD make compared to how many errors?

Some members here would lead you to believe that it's a very high number but in reality, more like .001%
Compared to McDonalds drive through who screw up 10-15% of orders, I give UD props for their numbers.

Great anlaogy.

I was half expecting to see that this was posted by Leo "they *#&%(^*# you at the drive through." Getz,

Im not sure you can count all the patches together as a whole. That card is numbered out of 9, which means only 36 pieces are to be put into those 9 cards. So for that print run (only that card) they have screwed up 11% of the available cards (again only that card).

For GU cards that have 100's available its less of a problem. But when only 9 versions exist 11% is WAY to high.

And to compare McDonalds to UD isnt a good choice. You can go back to McDonalds and tell them what happened, and you will get the problem fixed.
At upperdeck you gotta try and get in contact with them. The pay money to get send the card back and maybe get the card fixed (highly unlikely), but they would more or less send back the card (its a low numbered one) along with some freebies that might sell on ebay for a couple of bucks.

UD has quality control problems (among others), that they are not addressing. Im not so sure its the problems people are bringing up but more the fact that the same problems have been happening over and over with no sign of the problems being addressed.

Well, I just started work this week for a finishing company that actually did some fulfillment work on football memoribilia cards last year before I worked there... They said the jerseys are layed flat, then die cut between pieces of chipboard, then minumum wage workers actually put the swatches in the cards, most of which probably know nothing about the sport, most actually dont even speak English. It was interesting learning stuff like that this week. Apperently which ever company it was sent over their own security guards as well to watch everyone.

playing devils advocate-

presuming the patches are of the 4 people the card states it belongs to, the card still doesn't mention that the patch piece would match the person depicted on the picture with it. it just states the card has those pieces. UD hasn't messed up yet.

previous analogy of McD's would be you order a hamburger and cheeseburger and you get both but they switched the wrappers on you. only difference is people care about their hockey cards.

You have to look at this fairly logistically and in a bigger picture like Damien did and look at what's a fair quality control number for the product into a whole. In a product where you might be QCing 2-3% of the entire product, that means you're only seeing 2 or 3 of those Patch foursomes total, and they won't necessarily be this one. Same with the dual patches, same with the trios and so on. There are 2,805 different cards in SP Game Used, not accounting for print runs. Even if they were to look at one copy of each card, short prints or not, it would take one FTE approximately 6 weeks assuming each card was allotted about 5 minutes. Realistically, they probably have a couple people per product around to do this, but still, it's a lengthy process given the amount of cards in the product, but the point still stands. Assuming a print run of 3000 12 boxes cases, that's over 645,000 individual cards that are packed out for this product alone, which is one of their more limited print runs. Even 3% of that (a hypothetical number) is almost 20,000 cards. You have to account for errors somewhere along the line. No process short of 100% quality control (which isn't feasible) will be perfect.

I was more referring to the short printed cards. UD knows that those are the ones people are mostly going for so more time should be put into quality checks.
With them being the only licensed manufacture of NHL hockey cards, you think they would step it up a notch to be the best. Just because there is no competition doesnt mean you slack off. Their exclusive deal wont last forever and when its up, they need to have the customer high customer satisfaction rate to keep them coming back.

No competition = no accountability = no need to worry about small details like which patch belongs to which player.

They'll tell you they're proud of their work though, I'm sure.

Again, you simply missed the over all point....... the numbers are soooo low for the screw ups, just some people just can't see that fact.

Much easier to keep posting how UD sucks, then going out and buying more and more UD products.... mind boggling to say the least.

Unless they've drastically changed in the last six months, I haven't missed anything, nor have I bought anything Upper Deck in as long. When talking about screwups, I'm not talking about upside down stickers or misplaced patches. I guess you're basing your claim on concrete data that you have in front of you. If so, then I guess you're right after all, I did miss the point.

I'm sure this is heading for a lockdown, so let me just leave it at that.

EDIT - Let me correct myself...aside from the two boxes of O-Pee-Chee, which they thankfully executed with little to no issues, I have not bought Upper Deck cards in as long.

LOL- you don't buy UD but you do have an opinion regarding it... Well put then.

I'm not saying that the company isn't perfect, far from it, it's just far too many people like to tag them as useless and then go to the other areas and trade-buy-sell their product. If you don't like UD, don't buy UD! really doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out.

AND for those who might even wonder or care, I cut down buying UD products and switched over to Pacific and OPC vending. Still won't find me starting threads condemning them, just stopped buying most of the product.

That maybe the case, but take a look at the other sports - the NBA has Panini only, and MLB is starting to look like an exclusive is coming as well. The NFL has the three companies right now - but it could be a matter of time before it cuts down as well - there is definite contraction going on in the industry - it's just a matter of when and by how much...

Competition in a declining industry really becomes a survival of the fittest - that's just basic industry 101 - and with the current economic climate - it just exacerbates the situation.

I'm expecting some serious issues with Panini in their first few years but everyone goes through growing pains.
I'd bet Topps will make a push for an NHL license in the near future. UD will have to be weary of this and other economic issues. They dropped the ball not getting a MMA set out this year, they have to make changes sooner or later to stay on top.

I see what you are saying, but that goes onto the most fundamental/important issue--- their creditability. Please remember the fact that a lot of times, there is only one color featured. Because of the nature of their business, the customers can only take UD's word for it. As a result, any obvious mis-hap would be understandably magnified.

Any smart person would just get out of this hobby lol. Collecting a favorite player and or/ team is one thing. The people that buy cases to bust and re-sell you might as well get lost, unless you like loosing money. I'm sure Upper Deck cares about putting the wrong patches in the wrong places, because that makes them look like idiots. They just dont take the time to look at the crap they are putting out until it's already out. This hobby is getting worse and worse, bail out now before regret it even more later.

Yeah, I don't know how many people have worked in a production environment, but I think that considering, UD does pretty well. Of course they're not perfect, but I bet the "average" collector does less work and makes more money than the people actually producing and QC'ing the product. Yeah, someone put their 399th auto that day on upside down and it's a Gretzky...it's still just a sticker, ink, and cardboard. Really, that's IT!
