Hey Everyone,

It's that time of year again! Another yearly thread to discuss our progress over the last year, and to list some goals for 2024.

If you want to find your goals from last year's thread, Please Click Here.

Here were my goals for 2023:

1) Reach 750 cards in the Jhonas Enroth PC.

I didn't reach 750 total cards, but I came super close with 739 cards. This is one I will finish up in 2024 at some point I'm sure.

2) Finish my Upper Deck Win Club set. (The Belfour and Kipper haunt my dreams.)

Did not complete this one - But Halfway there, as I finally managed to snag a Kipper for my collection. The Belfour will be tough, but I'm in it for the long haul. There was also a few updates to this set in SP Game Used, so I'll be looking for those in 2024.

3) Pickup a pre-war vintage goalie card for the PC.

Didn't happen, but I picked up some vintage goalie memorabilia cards instead.

4) Have Fun

Success!

Here are my goals going into 2024:

1) Pickup 5 new 1/1's for the Jhonas Enroth card collection.

Since I'll be reaching 750 total cards this year, I figured a new goal was necassary. I'm sitting at 73 1/1 at this point, so let's see if 78 is s possibility. It will be a tough one to do for sure.

2) Finish my UD A Piece Of History - Win Club set.

Going to keep on slugging away at this one.

3) Have Fun

Because what's the point if we're not having fun?

So, what are your hobby related Goals & Resolutions for 2024? Please let me know below!

Happy Collecting

2023 - Reach 3000 Luongo cards. I finally did it!

As for 2024???

Keep adding to the complete Goalie RC collection from 1990 to present

Reach 3200 Luongo cards!!!

Chris

Sticking to the part of the hobby that brings me the most satisfaction these days,
My captains C collection. Would love to hit the 6000 card mark this year. Perhaps a lofty goal but never the less very obtainable.
My advice to others would be to chase wha tever makes you happy and have fun.
It is a hobby after all.
Cheers and good luck to all in 2024.
Dan.

2024 will be calm for me. I have a nice selection of boxes on my shelf, I will open a few of them for sure. I want to open one OPC Hobby box at release too. I'll keep the eyes open for Odjick cards, make trades for Habs, Nordiques and vintage rookies. And, I'll look around for opportunities to sell some lots of smaller cards.

So these were my 2023 goals, in red is the end of year update:

Museum Goals

1) Try to get over the 25% of all goalies in NHL history mark with our pieces of history in the company vault (currently at 24.09%).

SUCCESS: We are currently sitting at 25.81% of all goalies in NHL history in the archives.

2) Try to get at least one larger scale exhibition showcased by our company where we are not bound by the space and rules of other events.

MIXED: We had one exhibition as part of a sport card expo where we were not treated respectfully and we will never set up at that event again as a result. We officially offer solo exhibitions now.

3) Continue networking and making the company known, not just inside the "game worn" and "sports card" communities.

ONGOING SUCCESS: This is a neverending project and we certainly did our networking part getting the word out about our company to many new avenues we had never reached before.

Card Goals:

1) As last year, continue quality/unique box breaks and less quantity just for the sake of views.

SUCCESS: We decreased the quantity of breaks and now when we do them, we do them with products we want and are interested in and it is much more fun doing those videos now.

2) Continue expanding my inventory with unique items to help fund items for the museum.

SUCCESS: With the expansion of our enterprise into COMC so anything $2-$49 is now consigned through them and all $50-$1000+ sales are now handled in-house in our eBay store, this has created more revenue, less work for us, and resulted in a great year for the museum, hence the success of museum goal #1.

3) Continue adding items to my secret personal collection.

SUCCESS: I now collect what makes me happy and part of that are unique cards irrespective of hockey, and also my ongoing "one autograph card of every goalie in NHL history" project which is fun to do and then showcase in my company's "Signature Saturday" social media posts.

As for 2024:

Museum Goals

1) Host a solo exhibition event at one of the venues which we have scouted out as being suitable for our purposes.

2) Try to reach 27-27.5% of all goalies in NHL history into the archives (let's be realistic, I'd love to reach 50%, but that is still a long ways away).

3) Keep finding enjoyment in the museum project and ignore the naysayers.

Card Goals

1) Continue our rapid card expansion through eBay and consignment as 2023 was a great year for us which saw us move many more cards than ever before.

2) Keep adding items to my personal card collection and have fun doing it.

3) Only open boxes I enjoy and not just because "there might be $$$ in it".

2023 Goals:

1) keep collecting with my son, took him to the fall expo and it was my favorite one yet. He has been to 10 or more with me in the past but he is at the age where he can find his own cards and do his own thing. I let him wander on his own....i found him in the upper deck break zone busting a tin of leafs centennial he bought with his own money....now we are doing the set what an awesome experience.

Success Roger still loves collecting and its something we can both do together. He is starting to focus more on basketball cards, which I dont know the first thing about, but the passion is still there :) We went to both expos and even set up a table at a local show. We made a small profit BUT I got to sit for 5 hours with my son and talk hockey and sports cards.....might be the high light of my year hobby was

2) add at least 5 bobby ryan card to my PC, now that he isnt playing this is going to get harder and harder each year.....goal is to end 2023 at 1283 cards or more

Success added 11 more to bring me to 1289

3) finally finish the 79-80 OPC set (394/396) and 78-79 OPC sets (394/396) and 78 OPC baseball set (235/242)

Finished the two hockey sets sitting at 239/242 on the Baseball.

4) finish complete sets for both my son and I of the newest Tim Hortons set hopefully released in the fall :)

Success we both did a master set :)

5) add this card to finish off the set 1995-96 Upper Deck Gretzky Collection #G19 Wayne Gretzky

Success set is complete !!!!!!

2024:

1) Keep on collecting with Roger. Attend both expos with him. Make sure he continues to see the hobby for the fun it is and is suppose to be.

2) Add 3 more Bobby Ryan Cards to the PC. very rare that I even see ones I need but here's hoping.

3) Finish the 78 OPC baseball set as well as the 76-77 OPC hockey set (currently 301/396)

4) Keep plugging away at the various 80's Non Sports sets I am working on.

My 2023 Goals are below. Things changed quite a bit early on when we found out my wife was pregnant in January. I dialed back for a few months but still had a very solid year:

PC Completion of 85%. Currently at 81.05%, I would need to add 117 new cards to the PC. This will be a tough one to get to, but certainly doable. Crushed this one, I currently sit at 87.34% after adding 179 new cards, with more potentially coming.

Reach 5,000 total Roy cards in my PC. Current count is 4,102. This will also be a tough one to meet, unless some large lots of base cards come available. Just missing this one, but am hoping to hit it before the end of the year. Currently at 4,869.

PC Beckett Book Value of $100k. I know BV is arbitrary and doesn't reflect actual value, but I do keep track of this on all my card trackers. Beckett BV currently sits at $83,862.50. Also just short on this one with hopes of hitting this goal before end of year. Currently sitting just shy of $98,500

Add at least one 1/1 to the Roy PC. Going to keep at it until it happens! Success, somewhat. I picked up a Paramount Printing Plate last week. It's not stamped 1/1, but that doesn't keep me from calling this a success. I was bummed to get outbid on 4 stamped 1/1 cards throughout the year.

Non-Roy goals:

Pavel Bure PC: get completion up to 15%. Currently sits at 6.93%, as I haven't spent too much time or money on this one in 2022. I would need 178 new cards to reach this, but should be pretty easy to reach with some base lot pickups. Will miss this one, I didn't focus too much on this once we found out we were having a baby, so finishing the year around 12%

Restart graded rookie PC. I sold off this PC in 2021, and hope to add 20 graded rookies of HOFers/Future HOFers. Success on this one across all 4 major sports. I managed to pickup 25 total for the year.

Goals for 2024 (scaling back the total goals a bit):

Roy PC: Reach 90% on PC completion. I set lower goals the last two years that I crushed, so setting a loftier one for next year. I would need to add 79 new cards from where I sit today. New pickups are becoming increasingly more difficult to come by at this point, but will keep my hopes up!

Add one 1/1 to the Roy PC. Will keep going with this one each year!

Pavel Bure PC: Reach 15% completion.

Graded PC: Add 10 more graded rookies of HOFers/Future HOFers.

I also started rebuilding my general sports PC that I sold off in 2017/18 to get engaged and buy a house. No specific goals for this, just having fun with this chase at the moment!

Forgot I actually wrote down goals last year. Lets see where I stand

1) Focus more on the sharks PC. Currently waiting on a COMC shipment that will put me just over the 12,000 card mark. I would hope to reach 13,000 by year end.
Going to fall just short on this one. Sitting at about 12,760 right now with som more on the way. Don't think I'll make it by years end.

2) Get the collection organized and scanned. This will take some time but I'll be happy if I get at least all the way back to 05-06
Did not complete this one as I didn't focus on scanning much this year.

3) Finish all my ongoing sets and slow down the set collecting.
Almost a success. Missing about 3-4 cards for my 22-23 Series 1 set and I've been opening some Team Canada juniors blasters to try and get a complete base set but just the 2 sets on the go.

4) Get organized with my sharks rookie/auto wantlist. Would like to get a rookie/auto of every player to have suited up for the sharks. Need to compile the list and compare with what I have. I'll be happy just to be organized, no completion expectations yet
Success! Fully organized my list and been slowly picking away at it

5) Cut back on opening product and continue to wind down the traders box.
Definitely cut back on opening compared to last year so will call that part a success. Still working on winding down the traders box.

Goals for 2024

1) Adding more to the sharks PC. Let say 13,500 unique cards by the end of the year.

2) Add to the all-time sharks rookie/auto collection. Still need about 258 players auto and/or rookie card. Hoping to get that down to 200

Think that's really all I have for collecting goals this year. Will be fun to look back on again in 1 year

I didn't really have hobby goals for 2023. Other than just to keep enjoying it. For this year:

1. Thin out the backlog of inventory I have. I have way too many boxes of mostly junk that need to get out of my house. I'm gonna do something about that (I just found an 89/90 OPC set for crying out loud).

2. I want to sell at least $5,000 worth of cards through card shows and COMC. I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but with the stuff that I have, that's a decent number.

3. I'm capping my card spending at $4,000 for the year.

4. Give away more stuff to kids!

Strange for hobby goals maybe, but I enjoy the hobby my way, and you enjoy it your way. lol

Cory

Let's see what I had to say last year:

My goals have been the same for the last few years: Grow the Ranford PC, grow the All-Time Oilers PC. I'm adding "grown my Slapshot PC" to this list though!

This ^^^^ Nothing has changed. Same general goals.

My biggest Oilers PC wants for the last few years have been to close in on getting an autograph from every WHA-era Oiler (which I started working on back in 2017). There's 125 of them (that never played for the Oilers in the NHL). That early 2021 post shows me as having 85/125.... which was up from 68/125 in early 2020 (or possibly late 2019).

Now? I have 103/125 - but that was over the last (nearly) two years. I would be thrilled to get a few more. Is hitting 110 this year doable? Maybe, maybe not.

I got to 105 (plus a couple of upgrade). There's still 20 of these guys to go. I'll cross my fingers for hitting 110 next year!

For the NHL era: I've currently got 606/618. The missing 12 are mostly (very) current players, and a couple of emergency backups from the 80s. For most of those, I'm just waiting for cards to come out... when the 2021 releases are finally done, I'll be looking to add a bunch. I'd love to knock off one (or both) of those EBUGs from the 80s, but I've been looking for a long time, and no luck.

I'm sure another player or two will make their Oilers debut this year (and early 2023), so I'd like to be in the 618/624 range by the end of 2023. I think that's doable.

My actual numbers ended being 620 / 631. That's pretty good. Like I said last year - it's all either very recent additions to the team, or emergency backups I'm missing.

There will likely be a few more names added to the list as the season goes on. I'll aim for 630/635.

For Ranford: I'm less focused on "get one of everything" than I used to be. There's been a ton of multi-player GU cards in the last few years that didn't interest me nearly as much as they once would have. I typically go one any copy of any variation of those - and leave it at that. Certainly do still try and build rainbows from sets like Artifacts & SPGU.

It would be a successful year for my Ranford collection if I were to add another 10 cards (based on my current wantlist). It would be really successful if I were able to add a card I need pre-2015 (of which there are 9, they're all limited to 25 or less... 6 of them are /5 or less).

I added exactly zero pre-2015 cards in the last year.... and that's my goal this year. Get at least one (hopefully that '98 MVP Super Script). I'll keep adding new products, if I like them.

My Slapshot PC: I wish I had started this years ago. It's been a ton of fun for me to build. I'm chasing signatures from as many people that were in the movie as I can get. Most of them are coming via TTM autos, on custom cards I'm making from screen shots of the movie. My current total is at 56 (some of these are pack-pulled autos too). I'd like to hit 65 next year..... but it's getting tougher and tougher to find new ones.

This one didn't grow at all. I just didn't work on it. Maybe 2024 will be the year?

1) Dip my toe slightly back into the hobby. I can't be nearly as all-in as I used to be, but I think I can start letting myself pick up things again. I just wish people would settle down and allow logic and rationale price their cards, not "it's a rookie! To the moon with you!"

I dipped my toe in a little bit this year, so I consider this a win. I got into a couple of breaks, opened some retail boxes, purchased a few cards, and completed a trade or two IIRC.

2) I'd love to finish my 2015-16 OPC Platinum base set. Only missing one card: 187 - Noah Hanafin base auto RC. It was a redemption from what I remember, and I've only ever seen one of them. I have two rainbows and one seismic gold parallel of it, but I've yet to see the base version live.

I wasn't able to find the Hanafin. I also didn't look too hard for it.

3) Obtain one, if not both, of the two remaining cards from the 1999-2000 Upper Deck Exclusives set I need. 40 - Adam Foote and 206 - Doug Gilmour.

Fail. Epicly. I just can't seem to find either of these.

4) Going back to 2015-16 OPC Platinum, I would like to obtain the last Traxx parallel I need to put that one to bed (155 - Mike Bossy), and two Retro Rainbows (R42 - Claude Giroux and R61 - Tyler Ennis).

Couldn't find any of the three. Not huge names, not big time parallels, so they aren't getting put up for sale.

5) Finish the Platinum Blue Rainbow Autograph set from 2015-16 OPC Platinum as well. Only missing HA - Dominik Hasek. I saw one a year or so ago, but was outbid at the last moment, and haven't seen one since. Hadn't seen one before then, either, but there's got to be more than one copy out there, right? Right??

Wrong. Very, very wrong.

For 2024:

I'm going to have some rather hefty personal, non-hobby goals in the upcoming new year, so I'm not sure how much time, energy, or funds I'll have to put towards cards. I'll dabble where I can, pray that the cards listed above show up at some point, and try not to let FOMO get the better of me.

Hey Aaron, thank you for starting this again, I enjoying reading the goals each year!

GOALS for 2023
  1. My current catalog of unique Whalers cards is at 4,364, I would like to get to 4,400 but it'll be tough sledding
This is awkward LOL, I am currently at 4,607 so this is a solid checkmark!!! The huge bump I got was from adding the new Hartford Whalers to the collection (Hurricanes in Whalers uniforms)
  2. Reconcile my own Excel collection data with tcdb.com This is a lofty goal, as I've been trying for months and can't get them to balance. At a minimum I plan to ask tcdb.com to add in the 11 Whalers cards that I own that aren't listed in their database! Even once those are added, I continue to hit a 3 card delta between the two listings
Most of this has been achieved, with exception to getting TCDB.com to add the missing cards. I've got them to add a few and they have ignored the others. I'll consider this closed.
  3. Continue to enjoy helping fellow collectors with my custom card work
I "believe" this rolling goal was achieved in 2023!
  4. Spend time on custom cards for the Hartford Whalers (they get less love each year from UD and no love from Leaf/ITG/PC, so I will create my own)
Achieved! I'm very happy to have so many Whalers customs, more to come I'm sure!!!
  5. My final goal is a soft one. I plan to continue to remind people that this is a hobby for many of us. Let's not lose focus on that. Yes there are sellers, flippers, breakers, and all other sorts of money grabbing participants, but let's try to keep the hobby from becoming obsolete due to greed. "Enjoy your hobby!"
I may have offended a few people along the way, but I feel like I'm doing my part.

NEW goals for 2024

  1. Focus on my Whalers "Want List" which is at 53 cards. Realistically, if I can get that down to 40 I think I'll be doing very well. The majority of those needs are numbered to 25 or less.
  2. Continue to enjoy helping fellow collectors with my custom card work.
  3. See if I can get to the National Card show for the first time!
  4. My last one is from left field, maybe more of a dream vs a goal. I would like to start collecting a "Card Show" inventory with the long term goal of perhaps one day setting up at some of the larger shows.

Resolution 2024

Posted December 19th, 2022 ......

SOLD plenty of my high end stuff since EXPO resumed in November 2021.
I still have lots of mid range cards by my standards but 2023 will be my last as a dealer.
Collection wise, really cut back on what suits my budget since I have other interests outside the hobby to spent my dollars (home, travel, .....).
Projects on the go, Parkhurst Super Rookies Bobby Orr autographs (DONE), UD Extended Mascots BLACK, almost there and for 2023, 2015 UD Master Collection set of 10 Bobby Orr autographs #/20 cards, a few to go!
Otherwise a few case breaks of UD2 and not much more and time to slow down as I have done over the last few years. Definitely there will be less S & Ts.
Might even put out some PC stuff less Bobby Orr for sale @ EXPO.
IT'S almost time!

TODAY, I must say for 2024 .......

TWO more EXPO in 2023 with a show in Montreal in May and able to reduce the inventory. I must back track and say that I have booked for the spring Expo rather than calling it "LAST as a dealer".

BUYING only fillers for current inventory and OPENING only 2023/24 UD1, UD2 and UD Extended. As for COLLECTING, I have added ONLY ONE Bobby Orr card to the PC and I am still attempting to finish off the 2015 UD Master Collection of Bobby Orr #/20 AUTO of 10 various colors.

Definitely SPENDING less time on the boards and really enjoying the time away from the hobby which is still FUN to me.

I did put some PC sets / cards out for sale @Expo and I was able to sell one of the four sets. I am still maintaining my Bobby Orr PC intact with a few Howe, Beliveau, Lafleur, ITG ONE of ONE cards stashed away.

WELL with little needs that I have, I hopefully will make some progress without over spending.

ALL best to everyone in 2024 in achieving your GOALS and let's have FUN!

-add one 2008-09 ultimate debut patch Patric Hornqvist (would make 30 of the 50 cards) -added zero in 2023

-add at least one 2008-09 ultimate debut patch numbered #50/50 and one 2010-11 numbered #35/35 -added zero in 2023

-try and finish the 1994-95 Upper Deck Predictor Hobby (blue) set. Need 9 cards -added one so down to 8

-try and finish the 1995-95 Upper Deck Predictor Hobby. Need 3 cards -added one so down to 2

-working my way up to 1000 total Ultimate Debut Patches. Have to update the list so not sure where I'm sitting. Around 780-800

I think that 2024 is going to be a pivotal year for me moving forward with my Iginla pc. I achieved one of my main goals in 2023, getting the pc up to 4000 individual Iginla cards. Going beyond that the numbers aren't a factor for me anymore, now it's time to get some focus on the direction I want to take with new cards that are being released. The last 2 years of Stature have had 62 Iginla cards released, with 17 of them as #1/1 cards. Needless to say, chasing everything is out of the question. (It always has been, but that is now reinforced 1000%). There might be certain series that I won't be chasing anymore. This is something I will need to give some serious thought to.

I want to spend more time on my Weebly site, especially getting my "binder cards" loaded in.

Don't have a want list, I prefer to discover cards that I need. Filling in older series, especially from 2012 and older, will be more of a priority in 2024.

As for 2023:

1. Get the Modano collection organized 100%
Should be able to do this, just need to focus

Failure: Started to attempt this but quickly fell behind

2. Land a few more Mo BGS 9.5 RCs I don't have
There's a few floating around out there now, feels like I can pull this off

Failure: Didn't add a single 9.5 but I did grab a few PSA 9s, so win there

3. Keep having fun
I've really enjoyed my time back in the hobby. I don't have that feeling of "I have to get that card for the sake of having it".

Success: There were times when collecting took a back seat but this year was always fun searching and picking up new things.

So for 2024, maybe the following:

1. Get to 65 total 02-03 Crown Royale Klesla/Sanderson dual patch cards. I had a goal a couple of years ago of 75 but didn't come anywhere close. This seems more attainable with how many I currently have.

2. Land a copy of 00-01 Private Stock hobby Klesla RC #/155. Didn't see one this year but landed some other elusive Klesla cards, so hoping this one pops up next year.

3. Attend a show. I've never been to one and seems like I might enjoy it. I just find out about them too late so I need to plan and keep a better eye out for them.

12/22/23 Been thinking about this post and what my goals will be in the coming year and I think I have my sights set on these:

1. Finish 2023/24 Upper Deck Series two

2. Obtain a canvas young guns of Bedard.

3. Obtain a hard signed Bedard auto

4. Obtain a second Bedard Young Guns card for my Young Guns collections,

5: Spend way LESS on busting wax!!! It doesn't seem to be a much fun as it used to be with many watered down
products and increased cost. That is why it says obtain for items 2 to 4 instead of pull the cards from a pack.

Guess we will see how this works in 2025, getting ever closer to thinking about leaving the hobby and when will it be time to sell off my collection?

Had to go back 3 years to see my last post for the resolutions.

Essentially, it was to organize my cards better, recording what I have since I have been terrible at this and sharing. The organization is getting better. I have organized and identified all of the cards in my pre-2014, autos, 14-15, 15-16, 17-18, 18-19, 20-21 “good” boxes and still working on identifying my pre-2014 jerseys, pre-2014 Rcs, and identifying and organizing my 21-22 & 22-23 boxes since the product is still being bought. I have a small collection for the 23-24. Hardly any photos, but the listing is real.

Recording cards that are /100 or less is now close to 1,100 with a handful not recorded and two unaccounted for (missing two 98-99 S2 /100 exclusives for about 15 years now).

I did start buy more quality. This has happened with more income but also better accessibility to better quality of products.

Moving forward, I am unfortunately getting divorced. One of the deals the my soon-to-be ex and I worked out was that we keep our own collections. I got serious about the card collecting in 1990, switching to primarily hockey around ‘95. It was hit and miss for a few years from the time I got married (00-01) until CrosbY/Ovie RC year (05-06) and since, a little light in 2014, but totally in it since McDavid (15-16). Well, the collection, which is scattered, but solid (no pc, set building), will be going on the market after the divorce is final. This will help finance my future. I used to joke with the wife it was a $1M collection…$1.5M collection…well, it may not be that high, but I think it is easily closer to $100K+. Part of the organizing is figuring the value and worth.

Btw, great thread.
