Your Hobby Goals & Resolutions For 2024

I haven't done annual resolutions in ages. I'll say this though - I completed one major hobby bucket list item by finally going to a National this year. Was nearly wall-to-wall busy working the floor with my editor and CEO at WorthPoint but I was able to work a couple deals along the way so I was satisfied.

Here we go on '24:

1. Complete the Jets WHA/1.0 certified auto project - I had this done for a couple years, then UD issued 20-21 SP Legends. I'm short Mike Lalor and am refusing to overpay. Stubborness is a virtue.

2. Complete the Jets 2.0 'card of every player' project - I'm only short on Saku Maenalanen at this point, who has ONE North American card and it's an online exclusive (UD Compilation). eBay will be hearing from me for int'l cards unless ComC magically comes around for me.

3. Get a Connor Bedard RC - I won't be picky. Can be any brand. I didn't pick up a McDavid other than the UD Portraits insert and Nat'l HOckey Card Day, not making the same mistake twice.

4. Get book deal #6 done -I've been sitting on a couple concepts for way too long. Need to action it.

2023 GOALS!

1)
TRY and open ZERO boxes this whole calendar year. I'm confident that I'll finally achieve this, lol.
SUCCESS!!

2)
Get down to 10 cards or less on my Andrea Bargnani non 1/1 rookie wantlist. (Currently sitting at 13)
FAILED, was able to find ONE card this year, womp.

3)
Rid my house of all my traders/non PC items. Whether it's selling, Halloween or sending more to COMC, want only collection cards in my home.
FAILED, I fail this one every year, I did reduce the amount of traders, but still have a bunch.

4)
Spend less this year. I spent probably the most I've ever spent in this hobby, in 2022...can't afford to do so in 2023. Not counting COMC, i'd like to make less than 100 separate purchases this year.
FAILED, I feel like I spend even more money this year, than last.

5)
Still have 4 Mikhail Grabovski (playing years) cards on my wantlist, I'd like to find at least 1 of those in 2023, JUST ONE, please.
FAILED, None of these 4 have popped up, it's just sad at this point.

6)
I have a semi-secret set that I'm going for, would like to reach 50% of it by the end of 2023.
FAILED, Did not hit 50% , but was able to get to 45% !

7)
Add one new game worn jersey to my collection. Not sure I added any in 2022.
SUCCESS!! Was able to add one gamer, a beautiful jersey of Nikita Soshnikov.

2/7 ain't great

2024 Goals!

1)
Get down to 10 cards or less on my Andrea Bargnani non 1/1 rookie wantlist. (Currently sitting at 12)

2)
Still have 4 Mikhail Grabovski (playing years) cards on my wantlist, I'd like to find at least 1 of those in 2023

3)
I have a semi-secret set that I'm going for, would like to reach 75% of it by the end of 2024. Perhaps a bit ambitious, but we'll see.

4)
Have two wrestling autos from the famous 1998/99 WCW/NWO set high on my wantlist. Will like to add ONE of those two in 2024.

5)
Would like to add yet another game worn jersey to my collection. I will be downsizing the bulky parts of my collection in 2024, but still want to add a gamer.

6)
Some of these goals are stepping on each other, as I have various wantlists that intersect, BUT I do have a master 150 card wantlist that I keep, and I would like to knock off 40 total cards from that big list.

7)
Lastly, I actually accomplished this goal in 2023, but I want to try it once more. I will try not to open ANY boxes again this year. I know it's a bit of a fun killer, but we'll see how it goes.

Hope everyone has a fun, and healthy 2024! Life is fragile.

Hello All,

I have reached a point in my life that I need to rethink my collecting. This year I will focus on;

1) Purge all Non PC items.
2) Organize my PC collection.
3) Acquire 13 cards for my PC Sets of Autos & Memorabilia.
2001-02 UD Mask Collection #'d 150, 100, 50
2004-05 ITG Franchises
2011-12 ITG Broad Street Boys
2012-13 ITG Motown Madness
2013-14 ITG Lord Stanley Mug

Best Wishes to all in their Collecting Endeavors this Year!

I'm going after cards that meant something to me throughout the years. I'm targeting those in 2024. Also looking at condensing (I've been doing that for the most part since just before Expo)...sell, sell, sell and put the money into maybe 3-4 big cards.

Great to see the successes on this thread!!

For my 2023 Goals:

1) Pick up a Vezina rookie - SUCCESS: picked up one at the Spring Expo!
2) Complete my 2020 Ionix insert set (7 of 10 in hand) - FAIL: got to 9/10 and decided to shift focus.
3) Continue to add key cards to the Makar and Caufield rookie PCs - SUCCESS: I have too many!
4) Break even less wax - SUCCESS: broke less than 10 boxes and hope that trend continues
5) Post that available card list and possibly trade more - MIXED: began using MCP and had some trades on there.
6) Continue to enjoy the hobby. It is just that, a hobby, so just enjoy what you have and like and do not bother trying to keep pace with anyone else. - SUCCESS: it's always fun!

And for 2024 Goals:

1) Refocus the PC and thin out the collection a little
2) Upgrade my Howe rookie
3) Stop prospecting and focus on PC players only
4) Break even less wax (less than 5 boxes)
5) Keep having fun

I didn't make any resolutions last year, but here are my goals for 2024:

- More focus in my collection: have been working on this for the past few months as a) I can't afford to buy everything, and b) I only have so much time to spend on the hobby, so trying to simplify a bit. In going through my various projects, I've started to figure out which cards bring me joy and which ones I could easily do without. A couple themes are: less low-end cards and leaning to fewer but higher-value cards, less focus on rookie cards, less on team sets and a bit more on player collections. Interestingly, I've found over the past few years that the more products and/or parallels are produced, the more I cut back my collecting targets. For instance, Artifacts went from 8-11 (non-auto) parallels for many years, then to 18 in 2021, 22 in 2022 and 28 in 2023. So after chasing them all for a while I am picking & choosing which I like and selling the rest.

- On a related note, sell off my extra inventory and the cards deemed 'non-core'. My spouse has been tremendously supportive of my hobby but I got a little carried away with my spending in 2023 (I have documented all my spending since I got back into the hobby in 2014). I need to bring this back in line.

- Lastly, stay within my budget!

Have fun out there!

Soooo.... I know it's a bit late, but whatever.

I really only had one goal for 2023 and that was to finally have 100+ Taylor Hall Graded 9.5 or higher ROOKIE YEAR cards in my collection.

Result: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Starting 2024 I have 104 9.5 or higher Taylor Hall DIFFERENT Graded Rookie Year cards. To this point I have cards graded from 18 different grading companies with 2 more (at least) that I am sending cards to shortly.

Here is a link to my website with the graded cards:

My Graded card collection.

My 2024 Goals:

1) Reach 125 Graded Taylor Hall RY cards

2) Have 20+ Grading companies in my collection

3) Get my backlog of Taylor Hall cards scanned and website updated. This is currently somewhere between 500-1000 cards.

4) Keep getting as many Rainbows and 1/1 cards of Taylor Hall.

5) Have fun doing the above.
