Sports Card Collector Stereotypes

Why is it ok to stay home or go out to play video/computer games but it's not ok to collect cards?

ALso like to add, most of the girls at work always says, "you collect cards and I collect shoes".

That is hilarious! If such a t-shirt exists I need an xxl pronto!!!!!!

Oh dear. If you're serious, get in contact with Bruce. He tries to pawn these off on anything that breathes. They are cool though when you and other members go to a show and you know you're looking for someone that wants to get H.I. Of course explain that to all the mothers with their ten year old kids :)

I think that the shirts are twenty bucks.

Well here goes...my wife was mildly patient at first when I started collecting cards, recognizing I needed a stress release and that I had a "collector personality" that went way back to age 8. As time went on her patience wore thin... Then after heading down to Tacoma for a major card show about 15 years ago with some buddies, where we set up some tables, I came back with enough dough to purchase our first home computer set up (which cost BIG bucks in those days). My better half was impressed but still had trouble understanding how others would pay good money for "pieces of cardboard". Since then my participation has been on/off, given children job etc. but I've always hung in there. I set up at a local show about 10 years ago and some friends saw me and had trouble believing what I was doing. So there definitely is a perception out there amongst those not bitten with the bug...that it's something adults don't do. I think that's true of many hobbies...since it's all about individual taste/interests...and as long as you participate w/i your means ($/time-wise), then it's not an issue. I do enjoy giving cards away to young collectors at my dealers store, sometimes to the amazement of their parents, when I'm opening packs. As well, I've found younger visitors to my house (nephews etc.) always appreciate it when I hand them a complete set of base cards on their way out the door...

When you sit down and think about it, there is quite a cross section of people who do collect cards. Even if you look at the folks who participate on this site, we have everything from kids to old farts who are supposed to be working for the military but got their bell rung and now have a man-crush on Carry Price (SHANE!)... LOL.

Doctors, lawyers, cops, factory workers, students.... Kids, adults, parents, grand-parents.

Yes I've met and got to know several people whom I never would've had the chance to before.

A strange common denominator...

That's the bottom line for me.

I've said this as far back as Beckett. Before I joined any of these sites, I was Mr. Anonymous walking the floor of the Expo. Now, I walk in there and I'm hoarse from saying hi to people and it makes the experience a hella lot better. Getting to booze it up after hours with some of you is fantastic as well.

There's a giant cross section, and that's fantastic. Some are cool as hell guys, others are schmucks. Some like personal hygiene and others are obvious soap dodgers. I like to think that it's what makes OUR world go 'round.
