Just saw on CNN, USPS is pleading to congress to halt Saturday mail delivery after it was passed into law in 1983, citing financial losses in the range of $6BN!

I can live with that. Being that I'm from Canada, USPS is 10x better than Canada Post. They're fast and reliable from my experiences... more so than Canada Post.

. . . and yet they will still raise postage rates.

Of course! While it will be a cost cutting move to stop losing money, they will also lose the money they take in that day also! Then again, does this mean the post office won't be open that day or that there just won't be any deliveries?

It looks like they are just cutting delivery, we only get mail mon-fri here and it's not that bad. What is it gonna hurt to cut back to mon-fri mail.

I actually heard they were thinking of stopping it on Tuesdays instead of Saturdays due to Tuesday being the slowest delivery day.

I can live with delivery 5 days a week if this would keep them from jacking up the prices every couple of months.

How much mail would the carriers have on Monday if they didn't deliver on Saturdays? I have heard them talking about how awful Labor Day and typical three day weekends are due to teh accumulation of mail - they would have this situation every week now.

I would think it would make more sense to shut down Tuesday deliveries but you know that commercial operations would not be pleased if there was no Tuesday delivery either.

As for postage rates - I kind of get annoyed when people complain about the cost - it costs us $1 or less in most cases to send a card regular mail across the country and to Canada - I hardly think that is unreasonable. I realize its an expense that no one really wants to pay but its really pretty darn efficient as a whole.

Yeesh...you guys. Come spend some time living in Canada where the postal workers choose selective days of the week to just take off. For about 4 months, I didn't get any mail on Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays delivered. There was one time where I just didn't get mail for 7 business days, and had 17 bubble mailers sitting in my mailbox one Monday.

This coming from a postal service that will sometimes charge me $5 to send an Ultimate Memorabilia card across the border. You guys have a much more efficient system for much cheaper than us...if I had the luxury of an efficient system like USPS, I'd totally be cool with this change. Till then, I'll remain envious of USPS.

...and if you guys think the USPS is inefficient...I'll gladly trade places with you for a couple months and we'll see what you think at the end of it :D

And just how lovely is Burnaby, BC in late January(pictures would be great)???

Just kidding I think the USPS does a heck of a job considering the amount of things that get shipped and distance some stuff has to travel. I am sure with they have been hurt a lot by the competition, gas prices, the recession, etc...

And every month or so they'll have it +1 if there is a holiday!

As a Canadian in the US, I can says USPS is friggin awesome. 2-3 days standard mail from the pacific to atlantic coast? You couldn't get that with the best service with Canada Post.

CP is just flat out bad. I dunno what it is. Maybe they send everything out by donkey. Also, I find most of my packages from Canada look like a truck has run over them. WTF is up with that?

Yea the only job that requires more efficiency is probably a bomb tech(yea it's a stretch)....and the USPS is pretty d@mn good compared to some other countries...

I did a search and they are not only considering Saturday as the day to stop delivery...Tuesday is appearently being considered....though as some one pointed out when Monday is a federal holiday that might not be the best idea....2 days w/o mail could be a bad thing, more so for the workers than us....

I think they should still deliver to PO Boxes since they are at the post office anyways if they do quit deliveries on Saturday.
