Don Cherry Vs. Ovechkin.....

It doesn't matter who it is celebrating if you're a fan of theteam or player you enjoy it. On the other side if you're not a fan of this player/team, 99% of the general population hate it or thinks it is just to much.
Remembering some of the great celebrations is great. Dave "Tiger" Williams riding his stick down the ice after he scored. I'm a Leaf fan so of course I loved it, but a Red Wing/Canadian fan would say.he is nothing more than a goon showing off. I think any one who is NOT a fan of OVY would say it is a little to much, but on the other hand it really gets the people out of their seats cheering, just like a good scrap.........OHOH I think they will try to ban celebrating too.
As for Cherry, he is a die hard Canadian and very old school. If anyone has a father or grandfather that age you know that it doesn't matter what facts you show him to prove your point...............HE WILL ALWAYS BE RIGHT!!!!
If you argue this I'll introduce you to my father!!!
 
Cherry Rocks! I'm old fashioned just like him. Next to golf, hockey has been the last of the gentleman team sports. Football is a joke, Basketball is no better and Baseball is quickly getting a bad rap. Soccer is in another league ;)

There is no need to celebrate a goal like this knucklehead does. I agree with Don, somebody is gonna clean his clock. I can understand a goal or two like Tiger Williams and Fleury but this is all out embarrassing.

I love everything about his game but the stupid goal antics. He could be down 3 goals with 2 minutes to go and and he nets a goal like it was for the Stanly Cup. I don't get it? The other night he was sitting on the ice after a goal and was calling over his linemates by waving his hands, what kinda crap is that?

And for all you guys thinking it's a Crosby thing, cmon. Don has bashed Crosby 100 times more than Ovechkin.

I lost a lot of respect for Cherry on this one. AO brings a passion to the game. You can see that he loves being out there and in the spotlight. I've seen some youtube clips of him doing goofy stuff around Washington and you just get the feeling that if you ever met him, he'd be a friendly guy to hang around. I personally don't have any problem with what he does. As mentioned, if he doesn't get in opposing players faces or benches everything else is good.
I think that he knows the limits. And if other players don't like it, stop him from scoring.

So now that Cherry has called that AO is "going to get it bad", does that mean if a player "gets" Ovy, that Don is the man who orchestrated the whole thing? :)
 
I love Ovechkin's celebrations. He is just displaying his passion for the game in a differnt way. Don may be stuck in his ways and can't accept that but I don't care what he has to say. He's become irrelevant in my books. Keep him on, it doesn't matter to me... I just change the channel.
 
An awful player and a mediocre coach who gets so much air time and has so much stock put into what he says? I've scratched my head for years over that. His relevancy disappeared YEARS ago.
 
I really can't help but laugh at the "old-school" mentality.

The guy doesn't really even do much in his celebrations compared to what we see in endzone dances and home run celebrations, yet he gets the rap of being a showboat from the old-school crowd.

What next? Ban the fist pump? You can't raise your stick above your head after a goal? (by the way, this was an actual rule when I used to play roller hockey in an old-timers league) The kid is happy and he's not showing off; he's good for the game and good for his city. It's not the end of the world.

What exactly should they be saying during interviews? They get asked the same silly questions every single day. It'd be hard to think up different crap to say to the same questions all the time.

Most of the players look stupid during interviews when they start answering with the usual cliches, but I think the interviewers are more to blame. Ask the same boring questions over and over again and you're bound to get the same boring answers.

Your old school so you don't like Ovy's celebrations, but you enjoy players mocking other players??...Doesn't sound so old school to me....Sounds like quite the contradiction....

I agree that interviewers are partly to blame. However, lame questions abound in all sports and while most athletes aren't the best linguists, I cringe more often at hockey players than any other.

As an aside, I'm in Burlington, too. Small world.

I personally like to watch Cherry, his support for our troops and police has earned my support no matter what.
 
For anyone who thinks Ovechkin is being disrespectful to the game or his opponents (listen up Don) just because he's excitable and passionate about winning, I say phooey. Is what he does more disrespectul then carving a hole at the center ice faceoff dot and planting a looney in there? NO WAY! Whether they feel it's "good luck" or not, it is defacing an international playing surface meant for all teams and players from every country represented at the tournament. How would Team Canada feel if the Russian team planted a Smirnoff label in the goal net ice, or the US team planted a mini flag in the face off dot?

No, next they are going to ban throwing your gloves, sticks, and helmets in the air after you win a playoff series or win the Stanley Cup. "Show no emotion boys, be a man." :rolleyes:
 
Huh, did you just compare Ovechkin acting like a 9 year old kid after he scores a goal to planting something under the ice suface where nobody can see? You actually think "Team Canada" would care if you planted a Flag or heck even a picture of Obama underneath the ice surface? Wow

It's ice, you don't think anyone can see it? How would Ovechkin know where to go to dig it up last year when the Russians won if he couldn't see it? I'm sure he just got lucky right?

It may be tradition, but to some non-Canadians, it is a complete show of disrespect to do something line that. And yes, when Don Cherry goes on his tirades about how "non-Canadians" act, I will compare the two. Ovechkin is passionate and gives everything he has to win, which many feel is too much. I feel planting the looney is too much and disrespectful as well, and worse in my eyes.

Crosby did it once, not a contradiction.

If Crosby did what OV does after every goal, people would be slamming him for it. In fact Don was against Crosby for the way he used to score goals, and celebration. Crosby grew from that, and is better for it.

I could handle if OV only did it at key goals, but every time is over the top.

There's no way players could see the loonie at center ice. If you want to talk disrespectful lets talk about the USA team placing the Canada flag on their dressing room floor.
