Hi gang,

Just speculation at the moment but this popped up when I just went to the ITG site.

Now it could be that the blue and white is just representative of Toronto, site of the Expo. Or it could mean that an all Leafs Superlative set is going to debut soon since this graphic is similar to what was used to promote the Montreal Superlative set. Hopefully Dr. Price will shed some light on this soon.

^ Leafs = Money

Last year, I broke a box of artifacts and one of the "hits" was a Andrew Raycroft auto. Threw it up hoping for a 2 bidder (meaning $1.04) ended up getting around $17 to an Ontario address.

Let the good times roll ;)

But just because something makes money doesnt mean you should produce alot of it. Bleu Blanc & Rouge understandable and made lots of money, but if ITG was in it just to make money and not keep customers happy they could actually do, Detroit, Toronto, New York etc.... then the market flooded with these?? Unless there is something special about Toronto and this year I doubt it will have anything to do with a Toronto Superlative. Maybe the logo fits in with 1972 somehow??

You can expect to see this as Leafs Superlative, BB&R was massively succesful for ITG as will the Leafs version. I'd bet on it as well that there'll be other team specific Superlative issues to follow. They're of small enough print run to sell quite well and team collectors love them. Just look at Original Six sales lately for evidence that the team fellas eat this stuff up.

Absolutely agree with you, it is a cash cow, but does ITG at this time want to start putting out team sets under the superlative banner (Very High End) in years that are not special or commemorative to the team 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th anniversay, 10, 25, cup wins etc... All I'm asking it what is so special about now and the leafs that ITG would make it a leafs set other then looking at wat kind of profit they can bring home.

Coca Cola would disagree.

IF this is in fact a Toronto Maple Leafs set, then releasing it at the Expo in TORONTO would make perfect sense. If this will be like the BBR set, put out a product limited to 1,000 books for a team with more than 1,000 deep pocketed fans and you're in for another sell out. Couple that with a redemption in TORONTO and it's gold.

There doesn't need to be a reason for it, just as long as there is a market for it.

Isnt that UD's motto, no reason only market. I'm just saying its ok for sets like taht once in a while but if Im going to try to save up for a book or two just to have them turn around and make 2,3,4 releases in a year I cant afford to keep up, and what happens next yearanother toronto book? Or is it just best to milk the cow before she dries up kinda thing? I would think that releaseing that type of product as commemorative products would be better suited, not just because we can or want to.

You shouldn't have to keep up. Pick your spots. No one says you have to buy EVERYTHING that comes down the pipe.

If you were all subscribers to the Insider's Edge, you would know that Superlative BB&R was NOT Superlative Volume II.

Not all the info is here on the site you know...

Honestly, I'd love to see them revisit the Original Six premise in this manner....and it looks like they are. A Leafs Superlative set sounds like a winner to me. Detroit and Boston would also be solid products.

With all due respect to Rangers and Chicago fans, those two teams would probably need a combined release - that is, if the Original 6 sales were any indication. The wax on those two was SOFT. And you can STILL find Rags wax more easily than the rest.

Superlative Bleu Blanc et Rouge was not Superlative Vol. Two it was simply Superlative Bleu Blanc et Rouge.

Just wanted to clear that up.

Yep, people that don't know that obviously don't subscribe to the Insider's Edge.

C'mon people, cut your card budget by 2 packs a month and support this place!

In our discussion with Brian Price in the chat room a couple months ago, he stated that a team-specific Superlative could be very well received. Since BB&R did so well, what's wrong with doing a Leafs or Wings or Bruins version? Obviously this would not work for teams like the Blue Jackets or Lightning, but Original Six teams would be very sought after.

Steve, I have to disagree with you on the Hawks / Rags though - look at the legends that played for each team back in the day... Hull, Mikita, Pilote, Hall and even Ted Lindsay (yes, he wasn't a Wing his whole career), plus all the cut autograph possibilities. Add in Kane, Toews, Khabby, etc., and that's a good product.

The Rags had Giacomin, Phil Esposito, Brad Park, Jean Ratelle and even Habs greats, Guy Lafleur & Boom Boom Geoffrion played later in their careers. Throw in Richter, Lowe, Anderson, Jagr & Bure, now you have a pretty well rounded out product. If only Messier wasn't on an exclusive.

I think that there are certain sales questions that comes into play when you consider the impact a Superlative Rangers or Blackhawks set would have...namely, how do you convince folks to bust a super high end product of players that aren't widely collected / appreciated in the hobby? Just because Pierre Pilote, Pavel Bure, Khabby, Kevin Lowe, Glenn Anderson etc etc played for these respective teams to pad out the look of a set doesn't mean people are going to rush out to pay heavily in hopes of acquiring these players. Both teams are rich in tradition and talent...but that doesn't necessarily translate into a successful hobby product.

The other trouble you're going to run into is trying to market the set to Canadians who don't necessarily have any stake or loyalty to bother trying to bust the product. The reason the Habs sets were so successful outside of Canadiens fans themselves was because we have a distinct loyalty to the older Canadian teams, even if we don't necessarily cheer for them. We still look upon many of their players as the bridge builders to the modern era and direct influences to the teams and players we follow now.

In this case, I think Steve has a good point in suggesting the Rangers and Blackhawks products wouldn't fly on their own. I don't know many people in Vancouver anyway that would rush out to bust an all-Rangers product while they would probably jump on a Leafs product as hard as the Habs product...we don't like the Leafs out here, but we still respect their hobby presence and understand it makes for good tradebait ;)
