I look at it like this - any and all patches that are not game-worn, are manufactured patches. However there are several sub-categories of manufactured patches:
1. Photo-shoot - these come from game-ready jerseys and the player has donned them, even if just for 10 minutes and nowhere near a sheet of ice.
2. Original design - As SuperLarrio said, these are simply design elements of the card. The OPC Premier and UD Black Pride Pride of a Nation Flag cards fall into this category. Obviously some are better received than others. I'm sure we will see many more of these in the future.
3. Germane (to steal Mike's term) - includes letters, numbers, and the BBR patches. Basically anything that is not game-worn or photo-shoot but whose design looks like it could come from an actual jersey.
There are likely more that I can't think of right now.
Somewhat off topic - Legends/Old-timers game-used patches. As a collector of a player who participates in these games (Hawerchuk), I have been inundated with a selection of these in the last 2 years. I suppose its not all that bad as it makes my purchase decision quite simple - DO NOT BUY. They are ugly. I want Winnipeg Jets Blue Red and White. Not fluorescent yellow, aquamarine blue and black. On these cards, the image of the player and the patches (even the "nice" patches), clash horribly. These may be Game-Worn but to me they are a far inferior version of an NHL Game-Worn patch. So inferior that I refuse to add any to my collection.
