Modano to Wings??

Modano has always been a Star. He could have left along time ago for more money. But he didn't. The Redwings have came calling once before, but he stayed home. Modano will always be synonymous when people think of the Stars. He can still cetainly produce some, it may not be in goals, and assists, but in leadership, and integrity. He should move into a coaching roll like Stu Barnes did a couple of years ago.

The guy can still produce - albeit not at the level he has in the past. Just because he doesn't pack it in himself because of the Stars going in a different direction doesn't mean he's being disloyal by joining another club. If he can make a contribution and feels he's up to it, all the more power to him.

It's not like he has to be taken out back to be shot because he's outlived his usefulness

Just to add to this wasn't it the Stars who told Modano they didn't want him? If that's the case blame the Stars not Modano. If he signs with the Wings he did grow up watching them so it would be sort of a homecoming for him.

If he does sign with Detroit, I have lost alot of respect for him. In my mind he will always be a Star. I can understand still playing for the love of the game, but it would be better to retire and start working in the Stars front office.

HUH??????
You are losing respect for Modano because his team said he is no longer useful to them? And it makes it worse because..... it's Detroit???
Umm - lets see, Modano chooses to come home to play for the team he grew up cheering for and is a perennial Cup favorite.

But you think he should retire instead of playing his trade for another year.
And do this for a team that un-ceremoniously chased him out the door???
And I am not even sure that Dallas could afford to hire Modano given the shape they are in until whatever sell deal goes through.

Why hate players just because they join the Wings??

While I agree with most of what you're saying, where are you gathering that he'd hate Modano for going to Detroit and not somewhere else?

I would just like to see him go out with the team that he started with, just like Sakic did. If he decides to keep on playing, eventually the team he goes to will do the same thing the Stars have. I think it would be better to move and retire, rather than being a fourth line player there only for his leadership.

I have gone over the post three times. Can you please educate us by showing all of us where Amsfan said he will hate Modano if he signed with the Wings.

I'd like to see that, because I must have missed it in the post you quoted.

Sorry your highness - I inferred from his post that Amsfan was judging him based on the Wings since none of the other teams that have been rumored to be interested in Modano were mentioned.
My fault.

In response to Amsfan's further post that he wishes that Modano would retire with the team he was with his entire career - I understand the sentiment. But if a player can still be one of the top players in the league (and a 3rd line player is still a skilled player) - who are we to say he should forego further playing tie just because his team no longer wants him. Why should Modano be subjected to a loss of respect for wanting to play the game he loves???

I am all for players retiring when their skills are no longer a viable entity in this league. But I have never said that about Modano. While it would be my preference for the Wings to go in another direction - I cannot argue that Modano would put decent numbers in the Detroit system. He$$ - he would probably put up numbers that would garner a 23 year old a 4 year $15M deal.
After all - he would be playing against other teams 3rd and 4th lines - not the top 2 that he faced in Dallas the past 2 years.

If he can play - I have no idea why anyone would lose respect for him for still carrying on with his passion.

Sounds pretty straightforward to me.

That is what I thought also - but apparently he only mentioned Detroit since that is what the thread was about.

You know how me and the Wings fans are paranoid ... we think EVERYONE despises us........:foottap::foottap:

But I still take issue with the respect comment as a generality.

I wasn't trying to say that I would hate him if he signs with Detroit. Honestly if he does, it would be a good thing for Detroit, because it would give some of their younger prospects time to work on their game. Like I stated I think he should retire and stay in Dallas in some capacity. He may have roots in Michigan, but his home has always been in Dallas. It is were he lives in the off season and created roots in the Dallas community.

I don't get the point in signing him to a 2-year deal. It's not like there's a market for his services right now or anything.

Maybe it is what the player wants.
I am suprised considering his wife works in CA. - but one never knows what is in the mind of players. maybe Modano thinks that this is the best team that he can make a splash with - and throw it in Stars Managements faces a little as well.

Does anyone know if he was actualy offered a position other than a figurehead job with Dallas?????

Honestly - why in the world would the Stars let it come to this???
Freaking pay him for the next year or so - let him retire on his own terms.

Shawn - there is a lot of difference between 'losing respect' and 'hate.' This is the only point I was trying to make.

For example, every time Bruce comes on and uses derogatory phrases like 'your highness' in response to a post, and then proceeds to say woe-is-me things like 'You know how me and the Wings fans are paranoid ... we think EVERYONE despises us........,' I lose a bit more of what little respect I have left for him. However, I do not 'hate' him. He could be the nicest guy on the planet for all I know - there is no 'hate' involved. However, there is also lost respect when he makes the type of comments he does.
