Dealer admits to altering card

So... PSA slabbed the card and basically said there was no alteration? That looks TERRIBLE on them too. How can you trust PSA now?

Also, this dealers a real turd. Use of shill bidders, trimming cards, wow.

And lastly, how Kendrick believes this makes the card more valuable is beyond me. There is just no way, under any hobby (cards, comics, etc) that something restored (in this case, it's trimmed) is more valuable than something unrestored. Just doesn't work like that dude. He's trying to say it aloud as much as possible so others will start to believe it.

i think he is just trying to make himself feel better knowing he spent 2.1 mill
(2.8mill??) on a fake altered card. sometimes if you tell yourself enough, you'll start to believe it....LOL

Exactly!!!

If this was before the purchase and they asked him which would he choose:

a) A trimmed card, that is known to be altered.
b) An unrestored card, in its natural form

There is nobody in the collecting WORLD who would pick an altered card for the same price.

He's definitely just trying to spin it and make himself feel better.

Yep.

This is confirmation of what a great many people have long suspected.

What's the suspicion?

Everytime I browse eBay for vintage PSA graded hockey cards, there are about 3-4 sellers that CONSTANTLY pop up all with amazing PSA 8 to 10 cards from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, each seller with 100s upon 100s of these for sale every week. I just find it hard to believe that so many exist in such good condition at the same time. My theory was that they are good customers and PSA was giving them favorable grades.

I see Kendrick's point...this card is the legendary card of the bunch. There's so much backstory to it vs the others. I don't think Kendrick is in it to resell nor do I think he's worried about $2.1 million. Whether anyone will ever want to pay that much for that particular card is another story altogether.

If anyone is interested, there's a neat book called "The Card" that talk all about the Honus Wagner card.

Trimmed or not, the "Gretzky" Wagner will always have the moniker of "Holy Grail". The history of this card, the backstory, the controversy and now the confirmation I think will make this card just as enticing to own as before it was confirmed to be trimmed.

Without question - it's a gorgeous card. I think it falls into that anomaly-type category where it will be impossible to predict what happens to it in the future.

I have no doubt that this is not the end of the story for this legendary piece of cardboard.

What is as concerning to me is his admission to "shill bidding" in his auctions.

Bidders online never know if their bids are being increased by legitimate bids but have to trust the auction house.

His auction house was around for a long time, I wonder if this ever happened to my bids, I guess I will never know.

Brian,

This also brings another question... Were any of the items you bought fake? It says he sold fake items too. Hopefully none of your items were fake or shilled but I guess it does have to leave a little doubt in your mind...

My purchases were vintage trading cards for my personal collection.

I don't grade my cards so I don't know if they are trimmed or not but I am concerned that I got a fair shake in the bidding.

I thought the prices were fair at the time but now I am concerned.

See and here's the funny thing - cards, for whatever reason, are one of very few collectibles where alteration for 'improved condition' is shunned.

Look at the popularity of American Restoration or how the guys at Pawn Stars will always talk about how much more a piece like a rusted Coca Cola sign will be after it's re-painted etc.

I've never understood why it's so popular in other memorabilia realms.

I'll give you the perfect example:

[

This is my first of two T206's. beat to all hell. Top right corner practically chewed off.

If I wanted to, an dwith an artist for a wife I could, have it touched up to make it more attractive. Heck I have an A&G original that has a pinhole in it. I could so easily fill it with substance and you would never know the difference.

And yet, I'd never even give it a thought towards that.
