First domino falls: Connor McDavid Cup RPA /99 sells $12,800

The thing that sticks out most to me in this thread is the obscene amount being spent on Eichel patches. Not RPA's, straight patches. Wow.

I'd rather have a Prime colors patch of a PC player than spend that much on a far smaller patch.

When a /99 RC of the reigning Calder winner who plays in a hockey crazy market with plenty of collectors sells for less than what some of these nit wits are charging for one tin, makes you wonder what's truly happening in the "hobby".

As for McDavid, the 01/99 & 97/99 might surpass the first one, maybe, but the rest I can't see selling for that price. I would bet they can be had for $6000 or less within 2 months.

I agree. Not many can lock away a 10K card long term. Anything high end like this will surface frequently

That's an awfully steep drop off though. Look at those sales for guys like Domi, Ehlers, Bennett and Panarin. None of them even came close to $1K. When the reigning rookie of the year, who is showing no signs of regressing whatsoever, commands that little amount of money, it makes you wonder why you would even bust a tin. Conceivably, you could bust a tin, pull an ARP /99 and still not cover the cost of the tin.

surprised that Panarin sells at all. He violates investor strict rules against buying Russian born players.

i will say, everytime i get a itch to rip some cup this year i just come to this page and see again that it's not even worth buying one pack of that stuff for me.

Is anyone concerned about the dearth of McDavids being listed on eBay? Are people holding onto them or are they just not being pulled?

I'm not concerned or surprised. If there's an extra contingent of Cup breakers this year that are looking for a McDavid in which to invest, and then they find one, I'd expect them to lock it up, planning to cash in at the end of his 5 Cup, 7 Hart, HHOF career when the value has quintupled. The same though process works for those breaking to hopefully grab one for their PC or the big hockey spenders hitting what will likely be the biggest card they will ever pull.

Why have we seen relatively so many more of the other /99s? How many people are pay mad stacks of cash to land a Domi or Ehlers or Larkin? Those are "less exciting pulls" that are able to recoup what you spent on the tin and you can go get another one.

People are breaking the cup, just not at the clip as they did in years past. I'm usually down for 2-3 cases a year, but I haven't even done one pack this year.

I think people who are breaking and pulling this card are thinking "$12,000??? I'm not selling this for $12,000." I remember the talk being that this would be a $20,000+ card out of the gate and I think that's what people were hoping for. Upper Deck took a lot of value away by releasing The Cup to distributors at such a high price (plus the subsequent trickle down mark-ups as it made its way to collectors).

Those who did manage to buy this card at $12,000 are playing the same waiting game. You're not paying that kinda money to flip it to make $1,000.

I wonder what Connor himself would answer if someone would say, "Hey, I have the best card that will be ever manufactured of you available here for 15k." Would he say "That's actually a good idea, it is not cheap, but I'll take it." or "Nah, I'm not that much into the card. I have infinite amount of autos and if I want a patch, I own scissors too"?

Modern cards over $10,000 are exceedingly rare. They're bought by rich dudes who have piles of cash. Those guys are buying them now, they aren't buying them later on the secondary market. Cup Mcdavid will never be 20k

LOL:laugh:

I've been trying to keep the OP somewhat updated when i have downtime...in case anyone cares :)

I wonder what the Eichel would have done if it was an auto - I never thought I'd own one, but $600 is getting into "maybe I should" territory.

It just lacks the appeal of a normal Cup RC though.
