Greetings all. Been a few months since I did this so I hope i'm not rusty. As we close the book on my birthday month of November and stare down the barrel of December, I thought I would take some time to catch you all up on my pickups of the past few months. Yes I'm still selling stuff, but I'm also adding stuff...just not as much as years past. New products from each company have brought with them almost mandatory Larry Murphy inclusion, which would be great if I wasn't a recovering completionist trying to break the habit. I can't catch 'em all, and as G.I. Joe used to say, "Knowing is half the battle". So I've been picky and selective with what I "have" picked up, trying to keep most basic pickups within budget while making exceptions for the special stuff.

September was kind of a wash, but let's start there anyway and show you how I did, shall we?

As a fan of the quality Leafs GU patches in ITGU, I started off with a few more of those:

2017 In The Game Used Triple Game Used Bronze #GUP308 Phil Housley/Larry Murphy/Al MacInnis 2/7 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

2017 In The Game Used Triple Game Used Purple #GUP308 Phil Housley/Larry Murphy/Al MacInnis 3/6 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

And I added this one with more help from my favorite resident Canada-US middleman, kmitchel Kevin:

2017 In The Game Used Jerseys Patch Bronze #GUP26 Larry Murphy 4/8 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

Thanks again, Kevin.

This was a duplicate, but I liked the wear on it, and for a couple bucks I didn't feel I could go too wrong:

13/14 ITG Decades 1990s Game Used Jerseys Gold #M20 Larry Murphy /10 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

Another cheap ITGU:

2017 In The Game Used Jerseys Patch Green #GUP26 Larry Murphy 3/5 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

Signed base cards are still a big niche part of my PC, but ones I need are pretty few and far between now, especially older ones. So when a recent search led me to this, I had to grab it:

91/92 OPC #277 Larry Murphy Autograph by primetimepawich, on Flickr

A nice little card celebrating Murphy's games played achievement:

2017 Leaf In The Game Superlative Stick Club #SC10 Larry Murphy 4/25 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

I've long been envious of the great "Journeys" cards out there celebrating players' NHL journeys with pieces from the various teams they played for. This might be as close as I get for Murphy (for now anyway) and I really liked the colors on it:

2017 In The Game Superlative Careers #C12 Larry Murphy 13/25 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

A cheap autograph /15 from the new Superlative:

2017 In The Game Superlative Signatures Blue #SSLM1 Larry Murphy 10/15 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

A purchase from our own g-force Greg:

2017 In The Game Superlative Signatures Printing Plates Cyan #SSLM1 Larry Murphy 1/1 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

Thanks for the opportunity, Greg.

Now before I get to the main event, I owe some thank yous. I want to take this time to acknowledge a few members for their special gestures over the past few months:

-ranfordfan Sean, who is not only great to swap messages with and always willing to lend a hand but has also gone above and beyond behind the scenes, surprising me by acquiring cards I hadn't even asked for help with. His stockpile for me seemingly grows each month. Nothing to show at this time as none are in hand yet but I suspect that will change in my next S+T when I settle my debts with him and reel them in. Thanks for all your thoughtfulness, Sean.

-our fearless leader Jeremy "gomaz", who pulled this from his box of Canadian Tire (his only numbered card in the box, BTW), laughed and thought of me for some reason:

17/18 Canadian Tire Team Canada Exclusives #77 66/100 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

He also gave me an almost-complete base set of the product and wouldn't even let me treat him at the Starbucks where he gave me the goods. He's just that kinda guy. Thanks for thinking of me, J. Always good to get a visit in and it was neat to be able to give you a sneak preview of this S+T.

-Theideafactory Pete, who thought of me and asked for my address when he pulled this:

12/13 ITG Motown Madness Patch of Honor #PH-07 Larry Murphy by primetimepawich, on Flickr

Goes great with the copy I'd acquired from our own Irbefan Bruce at release:

He even kicked in every other Murphy base card he could find. I appreciate the gesture, Pete.

-Kharlamov17 Victor, who grabbed this for me and thought I should have it:

15-16 ITG Final Vault Decades 1990s Game Used Jerseys Black #M20 Larry Murphy Gold 1 of 1 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

Didn't have to, but did and wouldn't take anything in return either. Thank you again for the gesture and words of encouragement, Victor.

-and as usual, kmitchel Kevin for being my middleman.

I've had dealings with other members here in recent months and appreciate each one, these are just the guys who I felt deserved extra recognition for their kindness towards me in the last 3 months.

And now, it's time for our main event:

I've always been a sucker for autographs, so while I try to restrict my spending on them, I still make exceptions from time to time. This was one such exception. Between the vintage Kings pic and the gold foil, it really stood out in the photo and I'm hoping it similarly pops in person:

2017 In The Game Superlative Signatures Gold #SSLM1 Larry Murphy 1/1 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

I've really tried to focus my PC around the unique pieces, with an emphasis on quality and variety of GU pieces from the various teams Murphy played for. As such, a stick card picturing Murphy with Detroit was something lacking in my PC because it didn't exist. When Leaf announced they would be releasing this year's Lumber Kings at Expo, I felt fairly confident Murphy would be included but was curious to what extent. A preview on their Twitter page tipped their hand:

2017 Lumber Kings Game-Used Lumber Gold #GUL22 Larry Murphy 1/1 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

Yeah, I wanted that one bad and agreed if it went live, I would be all over it. Well it did, and 2 days before my birthday, it was mine.

Once I had that one in the bag, though I'm generally not a fan of ridiculous rainbows creating artificial value, I felt that stick was one rainbow I could feasibly chase to build up that niche in my PC if the quality and price warranted it. So far so good as I added this one soon after:

2017 Lumber Kings Game-Used Lumber Silver #GUL22 Larry Murphy 1/5 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

When the checklist for The Cup came out, Murphy was listed on a handful of Detroit-themed cards but I was skeptical of the level of interest I would have in them. UD has used Murphy Wings GU in a handful of releases, but the patches have often left something to be desired. Detroit's winged wheel makes for some nice patches, but since ITG's Motown Madness, I hadn't seen any for Murphy with part of that. Then his first Cup booklet /12 dropped on Ebay, and this copy soon after:

16/17 The Cup Auto Pro Gear Booklets #APGLM Larry Murphy 12/12 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

Ah, THAT'S where the nice patches went - they were saving them. And my first Murphy booklet, so another achievement unlocked.

The trend continued with this card:

16/17 The Cup Dual Signature Materials #SI2LM Nicklas Lidstrom/Larry Murphy 11/15 by primetimepawich, on Flickr

I paid more than I wanted to or felt I should've had to for both, and more than any other copies might go for. But I isolated nice copies I wanted early on and think the patch quality on both speaks for itself.

And probably my favorite pickup from this timeframe...

I had a copy of this card that I'd acquired shortly after release back in the day, but as my tastes became refined, I became less satisfied with the dual patches on my copy. One was fine, but the other was pretty plain. Problem is, if I wanted to upgrade, for a long time these cards weren't showing up. I had archived photos of nicer copies, and this year I discovered why I wasn't seeing them anymore - someone had been hoarding them.

They started trickling onto Ebay from this person, and several months ago, one of the beautiful copies I had photographic evidence of showed up in living cardboard. I went all in on it, thinking I'd have no problem winning it based on the sales data I'd tracked. I was wrong. My best wasn't enough, and I lost out. Dejected, I tried to put it behind me until they listed another copy, as nice as or maybe better. I hoped the previous sale would've weeded out the big bidders, and that seemed to be the case, as I won for less than the last one.

This one really pops in person. GU from sometime during his first 3 NHL seasons? How can I go wrong?

Thanks for the looks, and thanks for all of your support. Comments always welcome, and I'll see you all here as we head into 2018.

Wow, some very nice pieces esp. the EOE! None of the Lafleur EOEs I’ve seen have been close to that quality!

Great Cards . I look forward to my 2 LumberKings 2017 boxes that I get next week . If ever one of your 2017 ITGU`s becomes available , I`m interested ;-)

Joe, you’ve added some stellar cards to your pc, really appreciate the commentary with the scans, made for a very enjoyable read. I can identify with the description of your situation, “a recovering completionist trying to break the habit.” If you ever start a club I’ll become a charter member. :D

Great stuff Joe! Was good to hang out over a coffee and get a preview of this thread. Love that EoE too dude and the Lumber Kings /5 is a great companion for the 1/1. Thanks for the S&T!

nice stuff as usual really like the cup booklet card .....

Thanks Nick. For all my griping about the price, it sure looked nice in person when I got it :)

Great stuff, Joe. Glad I could help a bit.

Pete

Thanks Pete. Every little bit helps :)

Thanks Brian. I know what you mean - I have images captured of most of the 15-card run now, and they're certainly not all winners. This copy may well be at the top of the list, so I definitely paid for quality.

Thanks Thorsten. If you crack any Murphys that might help me with the rainbow, lemme know. And I might have a nice 2017 ITGU quad for you too.

Great Murphy cards, Joe!

Thanks Curt

Great show!

That EoE is a beauty... and really digging the Lumber Kings.

If that Superlative Shield would just show up :)

Thanks Sean, of course none of these images are new to you :) Appreciate your help, and yeah, if that auto shield shows up...

Well done Joe, congrats.

Thanks Darren. I appreciated your tip on the Stickwork card a while back, and even though they never contacted me, it was nice of you to think of me and try to put in a word.

Awesome stuff Joe! My favorite has to be The Cup Emblems of Endorsements auto.

Thanks Collin :)

Any Kings cards are good cards, sweet pickups buddy!

Thanks Barrie, figured you might approve of that one :) Did you ever have any back in the day?

Awesome additions as always. That Team Canada card /100 is my favorite.

Thanks Scott. If anyone doesn't have or has never seen one of these live yet, for a base parallel, the /100 definitely pops in person with the foil.

Thanks Al. I definitely try to add to the show with my "stream of consciousness" commentary. And it really "is" like trying to break an addiction. I was so consumed with getting everything on my checklist that once the checklist got out of hand, I'd already been long out of hand myself. This year, I've sold more cards than I've purchased. It's always disappointing moving low-numbered cards that you know you'll never see or own again, but I'm hopeful that eventually I'll have something more consolidated that I can still be proud of. I probably shouldn't be collecting "anything" but I still enjoy the hobby and the people in it and still get a rush of excitement when I find a neat, unique piece. I need to continue the slowdown but will continue to tag along for now and pick up what I can.

That Murphy Emblems of Endorsements is literal cardboard insanity. Love it ! ! ! !

:)

Thanks Aaron. Even with the sticker auto, Murphy Kings GU has rarely featured in cards and it holds significance coming from an early window of his career. The set is over 10 years old and if it weren't for the hoarder releasing them into the wild, I might never see these. I was thrilled to land this upgrade and it's definitely one of my top cards of 2017.

And for reference, this was the copy I upgraded:

Thanks for the looks and comments.
Joe
