Erik Karlsson on the move?

Stralman & Coburn (along with Girardi) have expiring contracts. To me it makes more sense to keep those guys - because letting them walk is how you save $$$ to afford EK next year. Their combined salaries + EK's current 6.5, will be plenty of cash to afford EK's new deal, and 3 other reasonable dmen (especially if 1 or more is on an ELC).

That leaves Callahan, Palat, Johnson, Killorn as the group of players where one has to be moved immediately. They've all got some kind of NT protection, so a 3rd team is going to have to come into play.

Coburn and Stralman's minutes and salary would be offset by EK's this year.

Hedman - Girardi, Karlsson - Sergachev, McDonagh - Dotchin/Koekkoek.

Stralman could stay because he's a RD, and could pair with McD better. But Callahan has to move then. Palat, Johnson and Killorn have NTC's.

Moving Callahan and Coburn's salary makes it work this year. Girardi and Stralman's expiring contracts leaves lots of room next year, which will include a raise for Kucherov, and a bridge contract for Point.

It's 2 years from now where it could get tight, when Vasi's contract comes up, along with Sergachev. But if the cap moves up $5M by that time, it could be manageable.

Tampa has prospects like Katchouk, Raddysh, Stephens and Cirelli that they could move, along with Koekkoek and Erne. I think they will hold onto Foote. Tampa could throw in a future 1st in 2020, based on whether they re-sign EK.

It may not seem like a lot, but who else is in the running now? Dallas has pulled out and refused to move Heiskinen. Dallas offered Honka, and they said no. Why pay a kings ransom now when there's a good chance you can sign him without giving any assets up next year? Ottawa has no chance of re-signing him. The longer Ottawa waits, the less return they will get.

I don't think Vegas is offering up Glass or Suzuki, or Brannstrom.

I could see an offer of Hague, 1st and conditional 2nd, which gets upgraded to 1st if Karlsson signs an extension, or if they win the Cup. Similar conditions to McDonagh's trade.

I don't see teams offering much more than that because EK's extension is going to be a high AAV, and they don't know for sure if EK will re-sign. Plus contending teams aren't going to break apart their team, so it's prospect rich teams that have a better chance. So it's pretty much a 2 horse race. And if both dig in and say these are our best offers, what choice does Dorion have?

The Canucks are nailing the draft, they're going high end skill. Free agency is another story. But you can't knock the results of the last three drafts.

True. JB has cleaned up the scouting. However the years before that...

I did lose my mind when we passed on Tkachuk and took Juolevi. And JB must have heard about this Pastrnak kid while in Boston, but chose McCann instead.
